I had a few hours after slugs today myself, only caught two...a tiddler and a slightly bigger tiddler....

I had a few perch and rudd also with a few decent ones in the mix.

This is a bit of a special one for me, not least because it is the result of a friendship forged through FM.

My host and I had been talking about this for some months and so when the opportunity of a day’s fishing together finally arose I naturally jumped at it, especially as it was with an angler who I personally hold in very high regard.

To that effect I was out of the house early doors this morning under a blissful blue sky with wall to wall sunshine and I arrived at our meeting point early, early enough in fact to walk the few yards back to the small bridge over the crystal clear river below where three nice chub were holding in the current and I was soon back to the car to fish out my bag of casters before flicking a few in.

By the time my host had arrived so had a pike…

Once we had both finished drooling it was back in the car to follow him the relatively short distance to the lake where we would be spending the day, a very sporting gesture I thought considering he would have to answer for bringing riff raff like myself onto the fishery and after a good look around both sides we settled on a couple of nice sociable swims beside each other.

A simple, light dibber set up again right off the rod tip with chopped worm was the chosen method and for the first couple of hours or so it was slow going but along with the rain came the fish and then things really picked up, it was also at this point when my fears that my host had been down the evening before and chucked a few bars of soap into my swim whilst he pre-baited his own had finally subsided.

A nice perch was the first to succumb to the worm followed later by a couple of bream which prompted smiles along with comments of how much Jerry and Clive would have appreciated them :))) and then I hit into something far more solid.

After a rather subdued fight (which was a good thing really as I was on a 2lb 10oz hooklink) my host did an exceptional netting job on a nice mirror which tipped the scales at 17lb 4oz and I was pretty made up…

I also distinctly remember my host saying that I had managed to make it look much smaller in the picture than what it had done for real, or it might have been the other way around :wh

Following that I managed to lose a couple of fish, one which weeded me and the other to a failed hook knot even though I’d landed the earlier big fish on it and I then managed a few more bream, another decent perch and another nice carp which I had hooked fair and square in the mouth but somehow during the fight the hook had slipped and embedded in its pectoral fin instead (a-herm, splutter, cough) which also explained why it gave me the run around over half the lake.

A couple more bream followed and by this time it was getting on for six thirty, it had now been raining steadily for a few hours and so we finally decided to call it a day, from my point of view I had been put onto some very nice fish and even taking those out of the equation it had been a great day with a world well and truly put to rights and a good laugh along the way… Testament to the fact that we were still gabbing at eight o’clock!

To say I was ready for a cold beer was an understatement and like the fishing and the company itself it left a very sweet taste... I’m very much looking forward to the return leg when I can return the gesture.

Cheers Flightliner, here’s to a cracking day! :w :w :w

I like a man who doesn't go wasting a 2lb 10oz hook length, just because he's caught a
17lb carp on it...............

Sounds like an ace day, and a very nice report to go with it !

Steve, glad you enjoyed the venue as much as I did meeting up and sharing our day. Great show on your part as well proving heavy gear isnt always required to put large carp on the bank . One thing that confounded me however was that you managed not to break any brollies or chairs:wh.
Hope the tipple later went down as well as mine :guinness:

Jerry,----you're a lost cause but you're welcome anytime so long as you leave your shovel at the gate mate :D:thumbs:

Hi Flight,
I reckon it was having you along as a minder that caused the breakage-free day - if you take him fishing more often you could probably get a Carer's Allowance!;):D

lol, yes, good point Greenie. Imean-- an upper double carp on 2-10 bs line not being broken is pretty remarkable for any angler so the chairs n stuff going bust is one of lifes great mysteries.:)

This morning was the 2nd trip out for me since returning to the sport. It was a bit cold and wet this morning but a new PB means it well worth the trip!

Had a very short session this afternoon. It was an impromptu sort of thing. No bait prepared so I picked up a spinning outfit and set off for a lake that I discovered recently. Unfortunately half of the Charente were already there. Well, about ten sets of anglers, but they all had picnic tables, BBQs, boats, kids, dogs, the lot. And the way they were situated made it difficult to find a quiet spot so I had a few casts here and there and went off to check some mole traps instead.

I'm out at Ruffec on Monday on a job so I'll get chance to have another go at the swim I fished last week.

Fished a small fishery in rural Bedfordshire today. A small lake with a central island @13m. The wind was gusting and made presentation tricky on the pole at any distance.. I decided to fish short on top two+1 in c.5ft of water at the bottom of the near shelf. Fed hemp and caster with double red maggot on the Kamasan B911 18 hook to 0:10..Later in the day the wind dropped and I was able to fish the bottom of the island shelf too.

Weighed in 44lb:12. About 10lb of Ide and barbel and the rest carp for 6th overall..

Winner 89lb.

14 fished...

Another go down at Bury Hill after the crucians on Milton......and a second outing for Roly Poly.

This week I tackled and plumbed up without incident but for some reason it took me longer to get into a rythmn. A slow start as expected but after a while I started to get a bit of interest but by God they were finicky. I dotted me float right down and still the boogers were just twitching it. A scuddy wind made the float hard to see or I'd have swopped it for a finer tipped version. Probably half the bites I converted were little lift or sideways slides..

Anyway....I was getting bites and hitting enough so I was looking forward to a pleasant afternoon when it started raining. ....and I had neither jacket nor brolly . Bollox...that wasn't forecast !

It wasn't heavy rain but it rained all afternoon and I got steadily damper and damper. I was catching in bursts....first crucians then tench then another run of crucians. My backup line near the reeds produced a tench first put in and then a run of clonkng roach....but no crucians. The main line kept producing but around 3-30 the crucians decided to shut down and thereafter I had nearly all tench with only ( I think) 2 more crucians.

I finished with probably a dozen decent crucians with the best around 1-12 including one very odd looking silver one. In all respects it was a crucians except it was silver. ...odd but quite a pretty thing. Tench I guess 12-15 with the best around 4-12....most were typical Milton fish around 2-8 to 3lb.. Great sport though......at one point I had one so far into the reeds to my left I reckon it had swum up a rat hole and was 10 foot behind me. I got him out but wrecked me favourite pole float doing so. Bollox !

About 5-30 the lake suddenly switched off. I had to really work to get a bite of any sort and after an hour of that I,d had enough. It does that there sometimes and when it happens you might as well go home. One more fish I thought...then I'm off. I duly hooked it and it promptly bottomed my elastic and smashed me.Time to go.

Still loving the pole but I need to get my feeding sorted out. I haven't quite worked that out yet but I'm a persistent buqqer and I'll get there. Once again I doubt I used more than 6 bobs worth of bait.

After what seems an age of stress the move is done, the house sold and everything and everybody in near enough the right place so the chance of a couple of short sessions on the tip off tench [rock hard] water were eagerly grabbed.
I have been pre baiting a couple of swims for a while now and it seems to be having an effect as the last session actually produced a bite, which I missed of course. The lake is at 1100ft and is just showing signs of waking up so looking forward to great things, hoping at least to get it sussed out in time for Phil to catch a few when he comes down for the opening week of the season Wye trip.

Skippy, re your silver looking crucian... I made a request a while ago if anyone knew what the silver looking crucians were that I caught in france.

Someone suggested gibel carp and from the description I think that was about right.
Unfortunately they are an invasive species spreading across Europe. Apparently they are interbreeding the true crucian into oblivion according to the people trying to re-establish the crucian populations.

Lets hope yours wasn't a gibel that has been "liberated" from captivity??

Bloody hell ! I hope not ! I cannot be having with giblet carp worrying my crucians.

I've had a good google and I suppose thecfish i had might have been. That said Monsieur Gibel looks a tad carpier to me shape wise. The fish I had was crucians shaped....not a hint of dodginess about it other than the colour.. I'd like to think I know a brown goldfish when I see one and the Milton fish are crucians not goldfish.....still I guess a Lone Ranger can get anywhere. Never had one there before and don't know anybody that has either.

Maybe it was just pale from the shock of getting caught by me on a pole ?

Next time I'm there I'll have a word in the office. Maybe they know something.

I hope your suspicions aren't right John - another EE threat to fish stocks here  - let's hope it was just a natural 'freak' - or a 'koi'/goldie cross. There are some odd-coloured goldies around - like this one:
