Fifth session on the river, Fruitowl picked me up at 5.15 a.m. as he came off his nightshift and we headed for the Severn. Missed the swims we were planning on fishing by about 5 mins so headed downstream and found a couple that, while quite steep, so not perfect, allowed Stephen enough room for a couple of feeders and gave me sufficient space for a feeder and a float rod. Stephen had a couple of knocks on the feeder, I had some bits (small Dace, Chublets and a solitary Perch) on the stick and the weather deteriorated. After a couple of hours the pegs had reached the point where it was becoming hazardous (a major issue following his hip replacement and my lack of mobility). We made a decision to up and move, went downstream to a gravel bank which involved a hike of about half a mile (I'm too old and infirm for this sh*t) and set up again. I continued to pick up the odd bits on the float in a shallow stretch about 2'0 deep. Stephen had a run but the fish (probably a Chub) slipped the hook when my alarm went off and I had a Chub about 1.5lb on the feeder. Anyone remember my "Get Lucky" post? five minutes later, started to reel in when a smaller Chub around three quarters of a pound took the luncheon meat and I had a second. Following a spell of about 30 mins when we were invaded by "paddlers" I had a proper Dace on the drop which although only 6" long, created a proper tangle and resulted in a sit down to set up again, never got chance, alarm went off, bank stick fell in river, I grabbed rod, Stephen took on net duty. End result 4lb+ Chubb and our last fish of the session.

Worrying, I only fish a feeder to increase my options of catching, but it's proving far more successful than the float:(

Gnats cock from a Crabtree bad angling award Ian but seeing as you landed it ( albeit with assistance) a rare let off....

I fished an inter club match Tring v Hanwell on the canal at Aylesbury town..

Overcast and chilly with occasional showers warranting the brolly I got of to a fair start fishing pole up the far shelf, maggot over groundbait and dead pinkies.
Caught steadily for the first hour or so mainly perch and skimmers until a boat came down and despite requests to come down the middle he hugged the far shelf and turned it to soup... From then on it was a struggle for most but one ( Hanwell) fortunate found some bream in the afternoon and won with 28lb. His neighbour (Tring) picked a few off too and came second with 14lb.
I weighed in 3lb 3oz which could have been 13 if I'd landed the carp I hooked:eek:mg:
Overall The Tring anglers won it by a fairly big margin..
18 fished....

Unexpectedly difficult day; fished club match on Campbell's Pool at Milton Pools near Oxford. Nice little pool, we capped the numbers at 13 so could miss out a couple of the tighter pegs
Drew permanent peg 7, would have preferred 6 which had a nice corner and where could fish along the overgrown bank, especially when plumbed up next to the reeds on my inside and found 3 inches of water tight in...had 4 to 5 ft further out so set up one rig to depth, one set shallow which could double as an inside line rig where 2 ft deep a yard out, a heavier depth rig of 0.5 gm for if the wind got up, and a waggler to go out to the pads which were out of pole range.
Kev Burroughs on peg 4 caught from the off at 6m with banded pellet shallow and think he had four fish before anyone else caught which was pretty much how the whole day panned out.
I couldn't put a run of fish together any way I tried; ended up with 10 carp and a tenchette for 25-4 more or less evenly split between 6m, waggler and 1m. Amazingly this got me 6th with a weight that would apparently, according to a couple of our lads who fish it reasonably regularly, usually put you last. Peg 6 that I fancied at the start only had 7 lb, with a very good angler on it as well. Kev ended up with 117-9 for a runaway win with corner end pegs 1 and 15 second and third with 47 and 40. A couple of low 30s after that- no idea why it fished so hard, after a couple of hours three or four were still blanking.

Amazing number of Red Kites about today- up to 6 over the lakes at any time and must have seen around a hundred on the way back along the A40 . Hard to believe how vanishingly rare they used to be.

Another hard session on the river for me yesterday, it was damn hot too with the clear plastic pockets in my hook wallet starting to melt until I realised and put it away in the bag!

I really fancied my chances in all fairness… I was beginning to think this hard going was a loss of form on my part until I heard from my mate who was on his way home this afternoon from a biteless blank in an area I would have fancied myself.

Still, I managed a few fish but had to go mobile to find them.

The first was a small barbel of around 4lb which had a clear deformity but was nonetheless no worse for wear and it gave the usual good account of itself, certainly one I’ll recognise again when I catch it as a mid-double ;)

Aptly nicknamed “Kinky” and excuse my bare trotter in the corner of the pic as I’d had my feet in the river most of the day to cool off…

The last fish of the day gave me a reel screamer as I was slack lining and admiring a passing boat... Big, white, dart shaped and which looked like it should have been moored in a marina somewhere in Miami and the fish had clearly reached full speed by the time it hit the baitrunner and a nice fish if not a little lean after spawning…

That concludes a rather nice two and a half weeks off as I’m back to work tomorrow but safe in the knowledge it’s only for two days before another five straight days off.

Did I hear someone say there was a heatwave approaching around mid-week? :w

I had a walk down to my local small river / sewer today to see if there was any sign of life. First spot produced some small dace. As I trotted the float down the swim I noticed a flash go past me and go into a hole in the bank, several seconds later a kingfisher flew out on another mission to get food for it's chicks. I know kingfishers have nested in this hole for at least 7yrs. Second spot I tried I hooked into a snag on a

A small session on the river yesterday, quite a bit of algae in the water. Managed 3 roach, one fairly decent, a lot of small chub-lets about 6 inches long, must be last seasons fry, they were grabbing the sweetcorn on the drop about 1ft below the surface; good sign for the future. . Fishing on the bottom in about 8 ft of water. Two ees, one was massive, must have been over 4lb. Damn thing, I thought it was a big bream for an instant. These things should have border controls imposed.

Still, a pleasant day, plenty to keep me interested and quite enjoyed it.
I had bought a little packet of artificial maggot, never tried them before, not really the way to fish them I know but slipped a couple on for a spell just out of interest, not a twitch.

Tigger....Great account of the pheasant/birds of prey scenario- chance in a million to see something like that !!

Basically, today was nothing short of a disaster.....Having said that, it does one a certain amount of good to lose fish - a sort of reality check.
Started out okay with some reasonable roach on flake and corn, but as the unexpected sun moved round I was forced into fishing a small hole of around a metre square in the pads not more than 2/3m from the bank. Not quite enclosed but it was a tight little swim that needed me to wind the float up to the rod top and then lower it into the ' hole ' using a porcupine quill fixed top and bottom

All worked okay with a 12' Ultralight holding the roach just fine, fine that is, until a strike was answered by a rock solid resistance that could only mean one thing - a big crucian, well big for this water, anyway! I did my best but the ending was inevitable as the very strong fish heading further into the pads and was gone. Sadly, a short while later I had a repeat performance and that too headed for the hills.....

I don't feel the swim too enclosed to extract a good fish with the right gear, so when I reached home I had a look at a couple of rods with a bit more backbone and chose a Mk IV Drennan Tench Float ( over an older Tench Float ) as the former has a finer tip and ( maybe ) better when fishing close in. I've also added some 4lb line to a centrepin and I shall give the whole set-up a go tomorrow.............

Of course, it may well be back to the drawing board, come tomorrow evening.......We shall see !

I'd go 6lb mainline to a 6lb low diameter just to be on the safe side ;).

Had 4 hours today, slightly later start than I wanted so first chuck was around half 9, all perch (7) fell to two home tied 3g jig heads, using UL gear (Tronix HTO 0-7g rod and Fox ultron 1500 reel) then the snags kicked in or my miss judgement and I lost both jig heads! My arms / forehead / neck and the back of my legs are all burned (must remember suncream!!)
Anyway here's a couple of pic's from today.

Back on the reservoir as I was on Saturday although today the osprey turned up for about 15 mins - 2 bream biggest 5lb 5oz, 5 perch to one pound on worm & a roach of 1lb 4oz, osprey didn't get anything left, after being harassed by 2 crows & then chased by a tern, will have to try the Wreake again soon hoping the chub have finished spawning.

I went out with a spring in my step, believing that I was going to bag up in every swim today.

5 fish in 3 hours, and didn't avoid the jacks :eek:mg::eek:mg::D

I knew it was gonn'a be warm today but jeeez it was just too hot to trott  .

I set off mid afternoon thinking I could cope with the heat but I wish i'd stayed at home. It was a walk of about 3/4 of a mile to the swim and my thigh waders weren't the best of footwear to negotiate steep uneven bankings coverd in undergrowth, especially not in this weather. By the time I got to the swim i'd been bitten by bugs and stung by nettles and I was pretty much wet through with sweat !

When I started fishing (after emptying out all the bugs and plants in my waders) I did ok catching a chub after a few trotts through. After a few more trotts through I hooked into a barbel but I could tell it was foul hooked by the way it moved about the swim so I put enough pressure on to pull the hook which came back with a scale impaled on it. The next time the float dipped under the fish was hooked fair and square in it's mouth and it put up a good account of itself before running out of steam and coming to the net. The heat was already getting to me but it was the sun that was just too much and even though i'd only been there a half hour I'd had enough ! Another foul hooked barbel was enough to make me wrap up and make the treck back to the car and had a repeat bought of bites and stings. Another mistake I made was to wear a sleevless t-shirt, even though my mrs had put sun screen on my arms and face I still got burned...I can't belive I was so stupid.

Anyhow here's the only two fish I caught......
