Got up early and thought I'd have a couple of hours on the Gloucester canal. Turned into just a single hour, as that was when I leaned forward and my glasses slipped off my nose and into the canal... Can't see to tie or bait a hook or disgorge a fish without them so I cycled home and had a hot cross bun instead :-(

Did catch one perch. I was using worms for the first time since I was a kid. No idea why I haven't used them in so long - guess it's because I don't have much of a garden I can dig them up in. Anyway, was getting loads of bites but they were taking the bits of worm that didn't have the hook in it...

Still good fun, and a lesson learned about the spectacles.

What a day you had Derek...

Forgot to put on my earlier post,my first cast resulted in a nice crucian, whilst in the net it flipped stuck the size 18 barbless hook up into my finger up to the bend, but with the line still being through its lip, every time I reached for the fish,it bounced and dug the hook in further, the grand reweng'e,didn't half sting,lol...

Well, gave it a go today but did not stay long, got fed up, not a bite or a nibble, thought a little pouting might have relieved the boredom but no. No one else caught a thing either and plenty on the pier as it was a bank holiday. I had some lovely bait as well, unblown fresh dug lugworms and a packet of razor fish, most gone in the freezer for another day. Nice sea as well, the wind was a bit nippy but my undercoat was enough. Still, a bit of fresh air and a walk and a chat with a couple of day trippers, better than nothing. Wait for some summer species to come in I think.

The bloke in the tackle shop said some plaice had been about the other day, and flounders as well, he recommended the razor fish for them. However, the water felt dead today, I just got that feeling like you get sometimes and as the wind was a bit nippy I didn't stay long. I know a bit of beach that produces the odd flounder, near an estuary mouth so I might make the journey there in the week with the left over bait and if the weather stays good and I feel like it.

First time fishing since December-was mostly too windy and wet in Jan and Feb, and March to mid April generally poor up here.
Just had a local day, dug some lug and a few rag at lunchtime and went along Scorrybreac at half tide up this afternoon hoping for a few dabs.
Nope…one hit and run bite at about 80 yards which could have been anything, not a touch on the close in rod although wasn’t really expecting much down the side as a bit early for the wrasse.
Still, nice spot to blank and don’t need to take tripod…

Had a sea eagle soaring overhead for about five minutes but too high up for a decent pic on phone.

I would say its about 10/12 years in this lake and maybe a couple of years old when it was stocked. Little fished and slow growers in there.

Jeez Kev, you certainly know how to bag up! Top dangling sir...

Swings and roundabouts, Jon. Didn't get a bite today. Packed up after 2 hours. There are a million tench in this gravel pit and they are all still asleep. When they do wake up, any time in the next couple of weeks, it'll be a different story. Every year I think (on a sunny day) right, it should be fishing ok now. And blank. There were anglers, lured out by the sun like me, on all the accessible pegs - also blanking - so I ended up in one that needed a rope to get out of (anyone who fishes the Trent has a rope and dog spike in the boot)

Once you got down and set up in the edge it was comfy enough, but it was soon clear that I'd arrived a week too early. Horses came to cool down

I'd paid the farmer on arrival. He came past as I was sunbathing on top of the bank. I explained the situation and he said never mind, you can have the next one free. Well, if he insists.......

Had a pass out yesterday afternoon & felt that a visit to Newby was long overdue. Pretty much my favourite of our club ponds & well worth the longer walk. In windy conditions you can usually find a sheltered swim as well. I was (pleasantly) surprised to find that I had the place to myself. I was hoping for some Tench & with the benefit of hindsight, I should have taken some meat as well as the bread & maggots that I was armed with. Started on 8mm punched bread & was into small Roach (& a random Perch) fairly quickly. Switched to reds which finally yielded my chosen quarry, not a monster at a little over 2lb but very welcome. I also pulled out of what looked to be a pretty decent Roach. I continued to catch small stuff - Roach, Perch & a Skimmer, but sadly no further Tench. Still, I am on the board at least!

Finally got a day fishing yesterday and decided to go down to a local club lake.

I would be happy with anything, but what I really wanted was a tench.

After a few minutes of fishing the buzzer sounded and a perfectly formed 5lb tinca was in the net - mission accomplished, now anything else was a bonus.

Just as well, because for the next 5 hours I didn't get a bite.

Thanks Kev - food for thought there. You obviously make your own - is there a standard name for these typ of floats?
dibbers first came to my attention from Kevin Ashurst’s book “world class match fishing”. He was gifted the rig of Jacky Morzieres at the end of a world champs match in the 1970s and used it first for catching Gudgeon on the Trent (up to 20 pounds of them).
like big Kev, i make mine from peacock quill rather than balsa. They do fish better with a side eye (c. 5-10mm from the tip) ... but these days I’m lazy and just fish them double rubber (dispensing with the side eye). I only paint them on the flat top - dab of epoxy to seal the quill and then just paint the blunt end. I used to be able to see them at 14m, but now i find them trickier beyond about 8m 🙁.
shotting is easy as they are dotted right down so only that flat tip is visible. They’re the only float I use for on the drop on the whip (as a match angler) and as Nottskev says ... bites are very often sailaways.
