Get some mussels from fishmongers or supermarket, but if you go to the supermarket and can smell the fish counter , the fish have probably been on the slabs longer than in the sea. So steer clear ,You must be tuckered out Gordon ; might have a chance on Friday.You always do well at the Dam whereas I struggle, certainly on the feeder. Apart from pike on float fished dead bait, I have never caught a thing there on the feeder.
Lymm Dam is full of mussel beds , the carp anglers would always have a few mussels with them to use ,
Depending on where you fish on there , There is an old underwater stream bed going from the Nook across to the Baycliffe side , A cast of around 45 yards will usually put you into this ,
I had a drawing somewhere that someone did of the Dam bed when it was more or less drained in the 80's .Approx depth etc in various parts, depressions in it etc . The depth was judged to be around 18'-20' in parts ,
Plenty of pole sections,reels,rods and other tackle were "rescued" when it was drained down .

On reflection we could have picked a water with some shade rather than one in the glare of the sun all day but that sensible choice is reserved for Friday. It was cool however early on and we started as normal with Me on the feeder and Gordon on the float. It soon became warm though but very pleasant.
Gordon did very well with 44 fish , mainly decent roach around 6 - 8 oz and this one which Gordon returned without thinking. We estimate it to be around 1.5lb but will never know.
I had no interest on the feeder so switched to the float and had 15 roach of a similar stamp to Gordon save for his large roach, a hybrid of around 12oz and a gudgeon on the feeder. Finally the tench arrived and I had 4 with this the largest at around 3.5lb.
Happiness is a tench . I finished up with 22 fish and could have caught more on the float but the lure of more tench was too great. Cheers Gordon and let’s hope we don’t blank at Brookhouse.

Usual club water today, arrived at 6am first there as usual, so full choice of swims went for the one I fished last Tuesday as I caught well from it, same tactics sleeper rod in margin, and top kit fishing paste in front.
it was soon turning into a hot sunny day, the forecast said mainly cloudy but not there it wasnt turned into a real scorcher, and had to put the brolly up as a sun shade, started of well a couple of tench, two crucians, and an F1, and then the slimy smelly skimmers arrived, I am not a fan of these at the best of times, but 28 of them no.
so by 3pm I’d had enough of them, so changed to carp in the margins, same method feeder and wafter on the sleeper rod, but I lowered the feeder by hand down the face of the plastic pallets, which have been placed at the front of the pegs and backed with mesh to hold the stone the pegs are made from, I fetched the line up the front of the pallet, and placed a small stone on the line to hold it close on top of the pallet, to prevent the carp spooking of the line.
and fished paste on the top kit to the other side, which caught me a carp, another tench and more skimmers
, also had 2 more carp on the feeder so that trick worked again, not too bad a day at last, it was interesting at least, not going tomorrow in this weather, to hot for me and the other two.

I had to find a shady spot today. I went up on the Wolds where there was breeze.. I had dappled shade and I reinforced this by putting up the brolly.
It was very comfy and cool. Lake (pond) to myself and 18 carp to a method feeder and float fished prawn on a centre pin down the edge.

Well another day on the canal not a lot to report really the usual Gudeons althou not as many as the day before few nice Roach again few perch and small skimmers

I have hardly fished this last two months. Heatwave conditions, searing sun and UV rating literally sky-high!
But we have found a campsite by the river Lot that has a canopy of leaves. The river embankment is steep and the shade extends over the river.
So I was up early before the heat of the sun could spoil my chances. Result! Two barbel about 3 pounds apiece. Both full of beans and returned ok.
I think some cool springs from under the high cliffs must make life bearable for the fish.
For us it's an afternoon of 38c+. I think the fish are doing better than us!
A quick update.......out again this morning at dawn, same swim. Plenty of bites, soon caught a small barbel and a very chubby chub of about 2.5 lbs. Highlight though was hearing a loud splash about 200 yds upstream and seeing the ripples spread rapidly. Then an eruption of water mid-river about a 100 yds away, followed by the sight of two dark, long shapes just under the surface circling and racing about causing "jaws-like" disturbance. Eventually judged one to be a carp about 30 lbs - but the bigger fish was twice that length! The bigger fish was probably another carp, but maybe a silure - never got a clear sight.
Both fish disappeared downstream, still close to the surface, maybe a touch of mid-summer madness? Quite a display put on for myself and fishing buddy Alistair who had just decided to cast a line!

Looks idyllic Steve apart from the heat.
I've had a centrepin unused here for a couple of years, so it was time to try it out. Funnily enough, there's a video about the reel on youtube made by an FM member about 10 years ago, in response to other members who were prepared to rubbish it before understanding how it works.
The unusual feature of the reel is its drag, and I was hoping this drag would remove the risk of burning your thumb and skinning your knuckles when a decent size barbel dashes off. The drag is set by a star wheel and engaged/disengaged by turning a knurled knob on the back. I wondered if switching from drag off to on with a just-hooked barbel on the line would be fiddly, but it turned out to be one of those things you just do automatically after a couple of fish. I tried it in a fast, turbulent swim in three ways: trotting a 6g float or rolling the olivette on its own, both in free spool, and by rolling a bait to the bottom of the swim then leaving it static with the drag on. It worked brilliantly, and it's not often I've been so chuffed with a new tackle item. I'd say it's a game-changer. With the drag set fairly stiff, it's a piece of cake to add pressure with your thumb or to back it off a bit with the star control. It's smooth, quiet, intuitive to operate and much more enjoyable to use then the Stanton I'd used for this before.

Well went to the cut today just to get out found myself a nice little spot nice big tree blocking the full force of the sun with a gentle breeze blowing up the cut most pleasant Few Stripy's the now inevitable Gudgen few hybrids . All in all a nice excuse to escape the house

With temperatures predicted to reach 31c from midday, Er indoors thought I was crackers going fishing. Despite the cool and fresh air at 5.45 I concurred with her assessment. However I knew the pool we had chosen afforded shade from around 10am and so it proved.
I was in dappled sunshine for a while and then shade and to be honest it was a lovely day weather wise as we did not feel hot and a refreshing breeze kept us cool and relaxed. It obviously had the same effect on the fish as it was slow going. Mr Metronome float fished and had a few nice roach and Rudd plus a tench before I had broken my duck.
Fortunately I had a tench after 90 minutes or so plus a bronze bream.
I managed another 3 tench around the same 3-4 lb plus a common around 5lb plus 9 assorted roach and Rudd of a decent size and netters. Gordon had 27 fish and we both felt gratified that we had gone as a thoroughly enjoyable day was had and we didn’t sweat our whatsits off. Good choice Gordon.

A big fat blank for me this evening. I went to Hever and I had not fished there for a while. There were very few fishable swims, particularly so for lure fishing. Almost the entire river was choked with duck weed and fine filaments of algae. I had a few casts and made my way downstream, but it just got worse. I upped sticks and drove around to the bottom entrance where there are a couple of weirs. This looked far better and was devoid of weed, unfortunately it was also devoid of fish.
This is the weight system that I mentioned on an earlier post today. It’s quite neat, the weights are interchangeable and you can change them easily. The adapter has a corkscrew to fix it to the shad. I bought them from Decathlon and they sell stingers to attach the hook but never had any in stock, hence me making my own. This picture shows the only clear spot in about half a mile of bank. It was a very hard couple of hours.

Went yesterday for a few hours to a local commercial fishery mainly for my mate to try out his new margin pole on some high double figure carp.
Not one to pass up a lift (and my mates company) I decided to tag along and test out a second hand Daiwa feeder rod with a small method feeder and had five tench up to around 2.5lb. Along with four carp up to 16lb, losing two.

I was somewhat apprehensive about fishing yesterday despite picking a venue where we (@mikench and myself) knew we'd be in the shade for the most part. With a forecast of 31 degrees (it hit 32 later on) it could potentially be fairly uncomfortable even in the shade. As it turned out it was very pleasant. Cool in the morning with a gentle breeze later on. Fishing was fairly good early on with 4 decent sized Bream around the 4:5lb mark, fairly normal for the water.
What's puzzling is that despite a good head of Bream, no skimmers. A small Tench and a bag full of bits made for a most enjoyable day. Thanks Mike, looking forward to next week.
Managed to leave another float in the trees and the back legs of my chair (JRC Stealth recliner) folded under me and smashed the locating peg in the process. I probably hadn't located it properly.

I had a few hours on lodge farm at Fritwell,
I took a 10' Sigma specialist rod that I sometimes use as a pellet Waggler rod and an old silstar diaflex 7' multi tip rod that can double up as a short feeder rod .
I picked a peg under a tree that gave me some shade with a nice breeze blowing towards me .
I first set up the diaflex, put the Advanta 50 reel on it loaded with 6lb line ,came to put a feeder on and realized I had left feeder box in another bag , I managed to find a square lead which I threaded on the line followed by a float stop . The reason for this I could slide the float stop up and down the line to determine where I wanted the lead as the day went on .hooklength was 4" Drennan 6lb to a size 12 hook with quickstop. A few pellets were fired into chosen swims ,
Next up was the sigma ,reel was the PI Inception 4000 loaded with 6,lb line . A short guru pellet waggler waggler was locked in place by a few float stops . Hooklength was 5lb Middy with size 10 hook and a lassoo setup. . A trial cast with the waggler to see how it went was done ,
I was ready to go .
Bait was 10mm skrettings to start of on the pellet Waggler and 8 mm Robin Red drilled pellets for the straight lead set up .
Back up baits were Ringers chocolate orange wafters and Mainline 10mm tutti frutti boilies .
Again pellets fired into chosen feeder swims and a few into the intended pellet waggler swim .
The swims were soon active with the carp grubbing around for the feed , The depth averages around 3' in all the swims ,
Carp were active in left margin as well after I dropped a mix of pellets and boilies in there ,
First cast with the pellet waggler resulted in a missed bit , So reel in ,feed and cast again. I hadn't noticed a part of a dandelion head ( the parts you can blow off) had gone on my line , The next cast dropped short due to this and a bird's nest was the result as the dandelion snagging on a rod ring .
So out with the straight lead to a right hand swim , Sure enough the tip goes round and it was like trying to stop moby **** .There are a few carp in here to 18lb but average out between 3lb and 5lb Got taken into a snag 30 yards away and got snapped on mainline, the lead was lost as well .
What a start to the day , You think you are doing everything right and it all goes wrong .
Another set up with the sigma after cutting the birds nest from the line ,
Not having anymore I leads I reverted to a 2 swan shot link again stopped with a float stop and same hooklength as before .I decided to try the pellet waggler 5 yards to my left just away from the shallow margin , Bait this time was was a chocolate orange wafter balanced with a number 6 shot above the hooklength ,
After a few minutes of feeding 8mm pellets and a couple of boilies,The float buries and Moby **** number two is hooked and lost . I am cursing that I hadn't brought my 4 metre Shimano Beastmaster margin extreme pole , That set up is hit ,hold,land .
I decided to rest the margins and go out on straight lead again ,this time with a tutti frutti boilie , a cast put me just short of the island slightly in front of me , A short wait and the tip just slammed round nearly pulling the rod from the rest .
Another moby **** lost . By now I was cursing and wondering why the smaller ones were not feeding .
By the time it came to pack up I had lost 9 carp and landed one of 4lb .
And I was running out of swan shot for links due to getting snagged .
Maybe if I had taken a longer feeder rod I would have had more success, The set up I used has landed carp to 8lb if I have been using it for short casts to islands on commercials . I even swapped tips from 1oz to 1.5oz ,I didn't have any 2oz with me , I have landed carp on the lower rated tips.
Next time it's a longer feeder rod or screw a swing tip in the sigma specialist and use another pellet Waggler rod . I will be taking a margin pole with me as well, instead of leaving them at home .
I can't say lessons learned really ,apart from try a longer feeder rod, no matter what bait or hooklength I used ,The big ones decided to feed , The set up I used on both waggler and straight lead was capable of landing decent fish . But today they didn't .

Evening folks . Well it was early evening before i headed out today just way too hot but went to my local cut again nice under the trees peg had a few roach Hybrids lots of Stripy's 1 decent bream covered everything in slime and the inevitable hoard of gudgeon got to get some worms next time i get my pension got enough maggots for 1 outing tomorrow then thats me till the 24th great not
