Try rolling meat. Had my first barbel trip last weekend and couldnt buy a bite trotting with the float and pin. Fished the same swim using the rolling meat method and had two bites resulting in two nice fish.

Read lots about barbel - articles, features, books. Choose a couple of methods that seem good to you and use them. Not for a few days - stick with them for a few months and modify to suit your own waters.

Dont just check your rig and knots before dropping/casting in--check the mainline too, esspecially if youve been carrying a made up rod through trees and thick undergrowth.

Get on the river when it's well up Summer or winter.
The Dream fish will be feeding in these conditions!

Ignore all the self styled experts with their 'never fail methods', if you get a hunch, no matter how daft it seems, follow it.
