Whether you fly fish or not , John Gierach's prose is an utter joy . And sadly , he has died, at 78.

I regard him as the best fishing writer post WW2 , by far , and Trout Bum one of the best books on the sport from any era.

He had an endearingly punchy , very American style - smart , beautifully observed and with a Zen vibe befitting an old hippy .

I have written a lot about fishing, but five minutes of Gierach can make me wonder why I even bother.

Not heard of him I’m afraid. I do have a Trout Bum jacket though which is connected to fly fishing through Orvis. RIP.

He certainly had a unique style of writing that was both enjoyable to read and very informative. He ploughed his own furrow and seemed to get the most out of life.

My favourite angling writer, RIP.

I once looked up at a Blenheim Game Fair, whilst sat under a tree to eat my lunch, to spot him striding towards me.
