mackerel fishing

alan, you can catch stingrays from the shore on the isle of wight mate,ragworm is best bait so i`ve heard.

park shore for stingers on a big bunch of rag. some big smutts there as well. not caught any yet but 1 day i hope.

i live in emsworth, about 7 miles from pompey so selsey, park shore, hill head and a few other smutt marks are nearby, just need to catch 1 bigger then my 6lb pb.

if a mackeral is handled by bare skin when caught it will die within 30hrs. makes you wonder why the minimum size for them.

also a note on there about a trawler dumping 5 1/2tonnes of mackeral as they were to small.

can someone recommend me somewhere where i can go to catch a few mackeral ??

Only 20-30 or so in an avo will do me fine.

somewhere quiet as opposed to a big overfished busy pier would be good.

not too worried,, live in bedfordshire so anywhere couple of hours drive of there really

the only areas that i know of are along the coasts of devon and dorset mate,slightly more than a couple of hours drive i think!
no doubt mackerel spread all along the south coast and into the north sea.my advice is to phone a coastal tackle shop in the area thats closest to you,they should be able to point you in the right direction.

that forum conversation shocking how 50,000 mackeral were just dumped! i tried flattining the barbs on my spinner so i could un hook mackeral in the water and the hook snapped !

Try fitting a big single hook to your spinner fishface.

50,000 mackerel dumped,it`s criminal isn`t it?!and it`s not only mackerel that get dumped.ionce witness a sparat trawler shovelling it`s catch over the side, as they were undersized.tons of quality fish get treated in this way when the species quota has been reached.
with regard to your trebles snapping alex,do as jc says, discard the treble and fit a 1/0 single mate.
