If you're a real cheapskate, you can avoid even the expense of a monopod; the old trick is to get some string and tie a loop in it long enough go - when you are in 'taking picture' pose - over the tops of both arms and then under both feet, legs spread apart (ere, no missus, not a titter). Basically you use the taut loop of cord to brace your arms. It does work, kind of.
