Sorry to hear that Skip I know from the HDYGO thread that you have a history with the place...

Why the closure?

I wish I knew, Steve. I’ve read what the bloke who owns it says but it was obvious to me he lost interest years ago and I suspect there is either a buyer lined up or more likely he just can’t be ar$ed anymore. He’s not a young man and the fishing makes him no money anymore.

IMO the reason why it was not making money was that he charged too much and people voted with their feet. He then made it members only during a time when the cost of living was going up and up and I guess a lot of blokes simply couldn’t afford it anymore. You were effectively paying £25 a year for the honour of being allowed to buy a day ticket which at £12 a rod wasn’t cheap. That’s a lot of money for not a lot, many regulars left and there were no day ticket anglers to replace them. I was sometimes one of only a handful of anglers on a lake where in its heyday I’ve been unable to get a swim.

Although I could see this coming I am truly gutted. Where I live it’s carp, carp or carp and that is NOT what I want to do week in week out. I shall fish it at least one last time before it closes… a few Zander are known to exist in the small lakes and I’d like to try and winkle one more out. It won’t be very big but I don’t care.

My youngest son 13 years ago with his first OBH zander. He doesn’t look very pleased about it, lol. A few are coming out of the Medway this season apparently.

That’s about the same size as the first one I had out of OBH. Once my beloved Kennet got infested with crayfish and I lost access to the best roach stretches my winters were spent pretty much all down at OBH after the Zander. What I’m going to do in the winter now I really don’t know

There aren't too many places that have decent zander fishing on Stillwaters that are within decent travelling distance. I visited Weirwood Reservoir a couple of seasons ago and there are Zander in there. I got chatting to one of the guys who fish for them from the boats. There is a syndicate for carp and another for predators. if you are a member of certain clubs you can fish a mile of bank and also rent a boat for a reduced rate. Tonbridge and district have vacancies on their books for about £40 per year. I am pretty sure that it covers pred fishing. The last time I went it was very high and coloured after a flood and I lure fished it back then. I think you would come off at the next M25 junction, so it wouldn't be that much further for you. Its fairly near East Grinstead.
