I wish I knew, Steve. I’ve read what the bloke who owns it says but it was obvious to me he lost interest years ago and I suspect there is either a buyer lined up or more likely he just can’t be ar$ed anymore. He’s not a young man and the fishing makes him no money anymore.
IMO the reason why it was not making money was that he charged too much and people voted with their feet. He then made it members only during a time when the cost of living was going up and up and I guess a lot of blokes simply couldn’t afford it anymore. You were effectively paying £25 a year for the honour of being allowed to buy a day ticket which at £12 a rod wasn’t cheap. That’s a lot of money for not a lot, many regulars left and there were no day ticket anglers to replace them. I was sometimes one of only a handful of anglers on a lake where in its heyday I’ve been unable to get a swim.
Although I could see this coming I am truly gutted. Where I live it’s carp, carp or carp and that is NOT what I want to do week in week out. I shall fish it at least one last time before it closes… a few Zander are known to exist in the small lakes and I’d like to try and winkle one more out. It won’t be very big but I don’t care.
