Mike, Steve knows the river but as a general guide spool up with at least 15lb mono. If you can thoughget braid, I've got 80lb braid but it's no thicker that 15lb mono and the bite detection is improved with the lack of stretch. Not much difference at close range though.
You can get ready made traces and the usual suspects make them, Drennan, Fox etc... Depending on if you continue piking or not getting some trace wire, trebles, crimps and crimping pliers is better and cheaper in the long run.
I'm currently using Drennan trace wire (around 30lb I think), size 6 or 8 semi barbed trebles (Fox) and Drennan crimps to suit the trace wire diameter. Fox crimping pliers are dear at around £8 or £10 but they do the job well.
Almost forgot, long handled forceps, pliers andwire snips are essential too although I'm sure someone can help with these on the day if you want to hold back on investing before you'vs given it a go.
