Hi Clive. Yes I partly agree with you but, When split, the section follows all the fibres and then using a heat source, the section is straightened and then planed so the fibres would be planed straight. When cut and not split, lots more of the fibres are cut through along the whole section. As an example. If you take a load of side by side wavy lines and then cut a straight line, each side of the piece, you sever the lines multiple times along their full length. Now back to the cane section this is what effects their ability to bend and recover
