I thought the name got changed as the staff at the Zoo knew it was a female fish, and so the name got changed to a more female sounding name.

Still dont understand giving fish a name.

Chevin, have just searched t'net, and the only reference i've found was that the 'staff' at London Zoo did'nt like the name Ravioli, and so took it upon themselves to name the carp Clarissa.

One would therefore think the name Clarissa had some significance to the 'staff'. A case of wit, skit, or sarcasm ??.

Well I guess that must be right then. Despite having fished beside **** in the swim in which the carp was caught, I have never heard that story. However if it is so, I would think that it was named Clarissa being as Clarissa the Carp sounds a bit better than Ravioli the Carp. Perhaps the best place to search for these things is indeed on the internet as the answers you get there are obviously more reliable than those given by people who actually had contact with those involved.

As Ray says, I don't understand people giving fish names but I guess it might be a bit different when a fish is going to a zoo. However, I must confess to naming some fish I catch, but generally the names are either lunch or dinner.

I should think that's it, Ian.

The books would sound daft if it was Herbert The Tank Engine & Friends. :)

Joking aside, it's how people think isn't it? Leo the lion, Geoffrey Giraffe, Sally the sea lion. Then again - Paddington Bear?

I don't understand giving a dog a name. Mine thinks that Murphy means food.

Therein lies the problem with the internet Chevin, one person puts up a 'tale' stating the reason for the name change, and that 'tale' is then repeated on 1000s of other internet pages until the true/real story is lost.
