It's practically impossible to be selective --to catch just the small ones ........

Like I said

Try squid for your cats ---as an alternative to barbel .........

The smellier the better ......

Ed I'm going by local advice, its a small water with a small number or very large fish present.

Barblel do exist in the lake and that is the goning bait!

Yes James, Thats sound advice.

Using those methods already, can't seem to pick out the smaller fish........ which was my original problem.</blockquote>

Then 2 possible things. Either they are not there in the size you want in any numbers or you need to look at your swim selection and perhaps try areas that you may not normally consider, like shallow faster runs.

Just because bigger barbel are present in good numbers, doesn't mean you'll find fish of all sizes in every swim. The ribble is full of fish that size and are almost unavoidable in some swims. Yet I've fished other rivers that are full of barbel, like the Severn and rarely see fish of that size.

Squid might just be an even better 'going' bait ---and you'll be the one using it ....!!

All I can see at the moment is a need for small barbel, looks like I'm going to have to pay for them...................

Why use them so small --- have you seen the size of a cats mouth ---

Spiders is right -------A half decent cat would easily take a 2 lb barbel ....and bigger ...

They are no better than any other species and if they are far more plentiful thanothers, why not?

Why do people always put them a class above anything else?

People have used crucians for pike for donkeys years, because they had a certain quality that can give you an edge. They are asrare as rockin horse shit round here these days, so I'd be more concerned if that's what the thread was about. But, oh god so much as look at a barbel without drooling over it's beauty and how majestic he or she is and you need to stand before the firing squad.

What's all this putting an X on your door b*llocks about for god sake! Get real!

For me personally, I don't care about live baiting. It'spurely down to how plentiful the fish being used is and if there are shed loads of whichever species workslocally, go for it.

I'd be pretty peed off if live baiting ever got banned. Not because I do it all the time. Buts its a method I'd like to have available if I need it and it seems to be pretty good for perch.
