I only put it on to prove a point that Barbel can live perfectly happy in stillwaters as they can a river, its only the do-gooder,holier than though purist that seem to argue the point that they cant-they are just in denial!!!...Chef

I just read your thread of 3 months ago "commercial barbel".
I read 8 pages ( that was enough) and no purists came on and said anything against stillwater barbel. Apart from my spurious 1st post nobody has on this thread either.
Why after just 3 months did you feel the need to post virtually the same thread again?

The barbel are doing well in one of my local commies as well, mind you there's not many carp in there.

Why do fisheries insist on stocking fish that simply don't belong there?!

Carp are a non-native fish that belong in their home range of asia :D

Or in a bl**dy wok.:wh

Seriously now, many years ago my mates and i were members of Makins, the lakes were well stocked with a multitude of species, including chub and barbel,of which we had many to just under double figures, now these fish were in general good health, fought hard and apart from the odd out of condition fish(of which occurs with all species including carp)the only difference i could see was a paler colouration due to the water colour, also there was an abundance of carp to mid-doubles,so these barbel did'nt suffer,i feel the fishery owners should be left to stock what they want and the anglers can then decide with their feet, because its an environmental issue for some, wrongly imho.

I keep riverine fish in my Tropical Aquariums but I have ''marine'' circulation pumps running in the tanks so there is a substantial amount of flow to mimic river conditions which keeps my fish happy and healthy!
To keep Barbel in still water is not good for the fishes well being PERIOD!

Calm down ladies, all of our freshwater fish ( with the exception of carp ) came from free flowing rivers, they just didn't magically appear in stillwaters except maybe pike and perch which were possibly carried there as eggs on waterbirds legs....

And the small tench we used to catch from bomb craters in the early 50's - they hadn't been there long.

Plus many other species/aquatic plants that are undoubtedly transferd by the feathered ones from one location to another.

Are you sure carp never originated from rivers - The river Danube perhaps......?

"happy" - But fish don't feel emotions, do they?

"To keep Barbel in still water is not good for the fishes well being PERIOD!"
Can you support this statement with any evidence?

Can any one show evidence to the contrary ? and I don't mean I caught some and they looked in good condition, do they/can they breed in still water?

The barbel in some of the commies I have fished, like Hampton Springs and Lingmere are up to 5/6lbs in weight now, fin perfect and fight like demons. That's my observation on the matter. I'm not overly fussed on catching them, or chub, in stillwaters but none of them were frowning!

A bloke who posted here some years back (I think his name was Mike Wilkinson) was part of the fisheries team that managed a Cheshire stillwater, he claimed they'd bred in that particular lake.

Do a search it'll be here somewhere.

Edit.

Here.
