It's probably been asked before but recent posts have shown some variety in unhooking mats. Kev mentioned a bag with sides and Chris( Sam) appears to have a beanie type mat. I currently use a Nash mat which has a kneeling bit and a bag and it's been excellent for the last 3 years but it's dirty and smelly despite regularly being put in the sun. I am looking at a Korum quick mat, an NGT beanie mat and one by Prologic. What is recommended?

I have the korum Mike,I quite like it,slightly bulkier than my previous Fox offering, but I do like the relative safety of the newbie, even though I don't like leaving fish out of water even the shortest time,it does give those few valuable seconds grace if you forget a disgorger, camera,or set of scales...

Bleach should do it, but may change the colour.

I use one of these

And thoroughly recommend it.
I too have one of those. Ok for when you are fixed and not moving around as although it folds down into a bag it is not as compact as a mat type.
They must have gone up in price from when I bought mine looking at that price.

Mike, re smells.... I always give mats a wipe over with pine disinfectant when I get back before hanging them to dry. Same goes for nets which I dip in a plastic tub of the same. Stops the build up of stink. I wouldn't rely on sunshine especially hereabouts.
Give some cheapo Tesco pine a go before buying a new net?

Wash it in liquid washing gear, always ensure it is hung up to dry and smells are slight, unless your mat is using poor materials...

Put landing net across your knees and unhook the fish in the net, then tip it back in the water, unless you are catching large carp. on some venues it's safer doing that than having a fish flap on a unhooking mat.

Thanks chaps. I will have a think and go give the mat a thorough clean. It will have 2 weeks to dry out.

If you were to do that on and be seen on certain waters I fish, they would severely bo##ock you and possibly sling you off...

Being able to do that depends on the style and height of your seat and the size, type and depth of the net you are using.

I have washed it thoroughly, hosed it down and it's now drying outside. I have sprayed it with a net deodoriser and it smells divine.

I had this out when the club I was in brought in unhooking mats for all fish .
We rented stretches of the canal out for matches , it was pointed out by a few members they would lose bookings .
It was mentioned when pleasure fishing to use discretion, I wanted to know if it would be mine or the bailiffs .
It was also pointed out to the committee that some of the banks were gravel and could cause the fish damage if flipped off the mat .
The rule was passed but with discretion.

I have fished several waters where you have to use a landing net on every fish caught, bloody ridiculous, netting a minnow sized fry...

I'll pu the the kettle on. What mat did you buy Kev?

This one, Mike. A Drennan Specialist. Rolls up like a bedroll. Drawstrings raise the sides.
Bought with a massive landing net for a place I like to fish despite the preposterous rules.
I'll take smaller flat mats for barbel on he river, where your tackle is not dictated by the most pc of micro-management.
Cost an eye-watering £65.

Anyone know how to get rid of the grass invading my moss?
