When I was younger the weather didn’t put me off much and I used to go fishing in all weathers; but as I got older and a bit wiser I’ve changed my priorities and now if it’s really cold and/or blowing a gale; especially with rain, drizzle or snow; then I much prefer to be inside in the warmth looking out.

I sat there yesterday like a bear with a sore head, but I've had near misses in high winds before, the closest being sat on the Ouse behind a large bramble bush with a massive tree about ten yards behind, it was peeing down and blowing a hooley with big gusts, I sat there happy as a pig in tom-tit under my brolly, completely sheltered when crack, then thump and a large branch came through my brolly and stuck in the ground about a foot, the branch was a foot to eighteen inches away from me(it was around 5 or 6in diameter and more than 6ft long), so now I tend to be very careful around trees in heavy winds, once bitten and all that...

Barbel fishing can be excellent in storms. I seem to recall Tony Miles and Trefor West fishing through the Michael Fish storm of 87 on the Wensum. I believe they both had plenty of barbel

They are welcome to it. I can't think of a barbel swim locally that is not under or very close to trees and for the reasons that Alan mentions I'll not go near them.

Just a thought who would you hope would come out and rescue you. Didn't Tony Miles die on the bank in bad weather.

He had a heart attack and died on the Gt Ouse back in 2017 I believe. A friend of mine was fishing on that stretch the same night as Tony. I didn't think the weather was that bad from memory.

Gales often come from warm wet westerlies, and the high water and relatively high water temps can make for good conditions. But all my favourite flood barbel stretches are on wooded banks. Old trees are prone to come down in gales. Sometimes they knacker up old favourite swims; somtimes they create new ones. Either way, I don’t want to be under one when it comes down. I cringe a bit remembering sitting amid trees creaking and branches grinding together. I reckon Tuesday will be my next time out.

I dont like rain much but if I think conditions are sock on then weather wont stop me, other things might, but sometimes you just know you have to be there !

Fishing in a strong wind is never much fun either although you can use it to your advantage, I remember waiting for windy days to fish a drifter for Pike in the past.

I can see from the dates on pics on my phone that I last fished the Trent locally on Oct 29th, and even then it was up a foot. Hasn't been "normal" whatever that is these days, since. There have been a few dry days, but not enough to let levels come down.
