Very satisfying eating your own fresh caught fish although I admit I could do without the cleaning and skinning these days. Fish in a supermarket box has its advantages, those Iceland Dover Soles come in a box and no plastic wrapped around them, very tasty they are, beats cod and haddock any day. I have gone off mackerel, had a dodgy one a while ago so I eat a bit of salmon for my omega whatever it is but not my favorite fish.

I enjoyed Dogfish the one time I had it, caught off Anglesey. As I recall it was a bit like eating prawn.

It is tasty and known as rock salmon in many locations. It's not dissimilar to monkfish. It's not easy to skin though.

Rock salmon was a victim of the Trade Descriptions Act 1968 (as amended in 1972) that prevented the misrepresentarion of goods or foods . . . . eg, the Dogfish or Huss not being a Salmonoid ;)

Decent sized bream (as in bronze) and carp were always for sale in fishmongers in Oxford along with the trout & salmon and various sea fish.

Had someone been netting Newlands and the commercial waters on there ☺️
Tongue in cheek post.
You can fish Newlands one day and bag up on big bream and carp.
Go a couple of days later and you would have thought it had been netted.

I remember Rock Salmon, fish and chips was the traditional Friday treat in our house when I was a kid, We had about 4 fish an chips shops near us but we always went to Rainbows which was the furthest and always a big que on a Friday but it was worth it.. They always gave a bigger bag of crackling than anywhere else as well.

No. But Huss is obviously the proper name for a member of the dogfish family . Woof is just barking .

I'd eat a lot more Dogfish if skinning them was a bit easier, the ones I have tried were very good, and there's no shortage of them.

When I was a nipper every chippie in the South East had Rock Salmon available. It along with Cod were the two staples on the menu.

its really good battered & deep fried and the advantage is that there is just one long central bone with all the flesh round it.

All the chippies around my area all sold Rock, Skate, Cod and Haddock with their chips.

Just as a caveat to a number of the posts on here:

You must also have permission from the fishery owner to fish and remove fish from angling club waters, private fisheries or waters on privately owned land. Be aware, fisheries may have additional rules.

I’ve eaten:

Perch, various salmonids, grayling, zander, pike, eels.

All good (if from the right water, ideally a clean chalk fed waterbody)

Catfish - surprisingly tasty, “meaty” fish.

Carp - as you’d expect, distinctly earthy and rather oily. Not had one from a chalk stream, so maybe they’d be different?

Also…. Dogfish aren’t too bad to skin. Pliers, nail, wood, cut round fins, pull. Fairly tasteless meat but solid and good in curries.

Gurnet is another name as has been said, they call it rock so as to be politically correct,if you get a longish thin piece that is almost certainly a lesser spotted dogfish(and my favourite),if it is a short chunky cutlet it is a bull huss, the flesh is very nice and only a strip of soft bony substance....yum.
