I broke the tip on my Acolyte 13’ float about 8 weeks ago through crass stupidity on my part and in the garage. I ordered a new tip section through AD and got it within a week for £80. I love this rod and was willing to pay. I still have the end section minus 3” which I might try out of idle curiosity but , knowing my adhd I will know it’s a shortened tip and not like it. In my opinion you need a good few feeder rods of varying lengths and with varying tips. I have bought a good few second hand which I really like particularly a PI 11-13 ft feeder with the Asaki blank. It’s a joy to use and was recommended by Kev. I still intend to buy a s/h Shimano Technium feeder/ specialist when one comes up on eBay. I really enjoy taking a different rod out for an outing and to suit the venue. After all we don’t all wear the same shirt all of the time.😉
Is this what you are looking for? I am not the seller !

I have a pair of those and they’ve been great. Strangely, I broke the carrier on one of them. I hooked a 6lb chub and picked up a large stick on the way in. I had to pull the rod right back over my shoulder to net the fish and I snapped the carrier section. I couldn’t get a new section although I tried and eventually an as new rod came up on F/book marketplace. 140 miles round trip to pick it up but it was mint and only £50. The seller bought some carp rods and this was bundled in with them. Just the sort of luck which doesn’t usually fall my way. Most that I’ve seen are around the ton mark and sometimes more.

I've got a pair of these too - a scruffy, well-used one and a pristine one I bought from some unfortunate chap who'd had a stroke and couldn't fish. The name is deceptive; this is not a rod to waste on commercial carp or the like, it's a lovely, soft, supple rod that's ideal if you're lucky enough to have 3 or 4lb chub or tench in your vicinity. I use mine on the smaller local rivers with 5lb reel line. The white tips show up well at winter chub bite time, when the light's going off, and the lovely action lets you pull without fear of breakage.

Can't comment on the specialist but I have the technium 11' - 13' medium feeder rod. What a tool that is! Bought 1997 and only (upgraded) to a drennan matchpro medium feeder in 2016.
If the specialist is anything like I might have to look out for one.

I have 3 Acolytes and have broken two of them. I broke one by bending the tip when trying to fit a two piece 12ft rod into an MX5 ; the other I drove over in a 1600kg SUV . Obviously a proper rod would have stood up to such minor abuse...

I've no idea what the many other rods recommended feel like as I've never used them . All I will say is that each of the Acolytes (14ft Plus, 12ft Ultra and 11ft Feeder ) are each the best in class I've ever used . I'd buy another tomorrow the next time I break one

Less than it is currently going for. 😉

It was £110 when I looked on ebay. I can't find the retail price - they were out early 2000's iirc, but there are posts on threads which talk about paying £230/240.
I suppose you did get quite a package: butt, Avon top, carrier, 4 quivertips, bag, zip-top tube.
I don't care for the Avon top, but the quiver top makes for a lovely rod.

I recall you telling me that Kev. That on the bay isn’t a twin top so no Avon just the carrier section and 4 tips. It looks in good condition. It’s over £120 and is probably well worth that and more but not to me.

Are you sure? The one in the ad has the Avon top in all the pics, and afaik they never sold a 12' quiver only version.

I will look again but I missed it and several times if it has.

ps should have gone to Specsavers. I still don’t need it and won’t go higher.

Fair enough. I was just pointing out it was an expensive item in its day.

I agree Kev and someone clearly wants it and willing to pay so good luck to him.

Hard to ignore the Acolyte-haters who seem to exaggerate the failures, and seem all too keen to rub salt into the wounds, but I was just re-reading a 13-page Acolyte thread on this forum - one of overwhelming positivity - which provides the reassurance you're suggesting.
What an interesting comment.

Can you substantiate your 'Acolyte-haters' expression?

Who are you referring to?

I've waggled a few Acolytes and truly feel that they are wonderful rods... But in practice their failure record lets them down abysmally in my opinion.

That to me is balanced, objective criticism.

I've read of many failures and I know a few anglers who have personally suffered failures.

Does that logical, evidence based personal judgement deem someone to be a 'hater'?

A disappointed individual yes, I personally would have liked them to be, imo, reliable so that I could confidently use one but I personally don't think they are and so I won't.

Did you also count the number of objective posts in various threads on this forum who have suffered failures?

Just because someone holds, on the balance of the evidence available to them, an objective opinion, it doesn't mean to say that they bare some sort of grudge or are, as you rather derogatorily (imo) put it, 'haters'.

So I repeat my question...

Who are the 'Acolyte-haters' that you refer to?

I was at pains not to mention names, as I prefer to play the ball not the man, but I'm sorry that you appear to have taken it personally. Perhaps 'haters' is too strong a word (it wasn't intended to be taken quite so literally), but reports of people who know the uncle of a friend, of another friend, whose Acolyte snapped in two, are all over the internet, as you...

I've read of many failures..

... have, presumably, also read.

And thanks to the wholly reliable anecdotal evidence of breakages mentioned in this thread (all down to user error), I've come to the opinion that because people rarely admit to their own haplessness the negative comments found on other forums might not be wholly truthful.

Anyway, the thread was asking for suggestions (stick or twist, so to speak) - and after some instructive replies I decided to stick with the Acolyte for now and have ordered a replacement part.

All the best.

So...

You can't substantiate your earlier comment regarding 'Acolyte-haters' then?

I repeat my question and be explicit, none of this playing the ball and not the man bollox...

Who are the Acolyte haters?

It's a simple question, name usernames!

Still waiting...

You posted it so damned well stand by it and stump up your evidence or retract it.

Who are the 'Acolyte-haters'?
