I am going to keep the cockles and mussels for later ! I suspect at the moment even a Hollands meat pie won't tempt the fish!:wh

Tried two Tesco’s and a Sainsbury’s today, not a cockle to be found in any of them, although if you look online they both stock them, will try Morrison’s next they are supposed to sell them.

I might just try the cockles in vinegar! After all, freshly battered haddock needs a little vinegar to improve the flavour so why shouldn't pickled cockles appeal to the fish? Did I say I was deluded?:noidea::very_drunk:

Do the cockles freeze ok (for bait not eating)?
Off to Swansea market this week for a stock of laver bread and always buy some fresh cockles to eat with that, might purchase extra and pop in the freezer for a session later.

Yes, they freeze just fine as bait (or for eating), they also refreeze well enough. However, if you buy them for eating, it can be worth asking the fishmonger if they've been frozen previously. Not the best thing to refreeze for human consumption.

I don't think fish like acid, vinegar is 5% strength. You might do better if you put them into sodium bicarb mate.

Thanks chaps! I will rinse them off with something before use as I have a couple of jars and some mussels! If that doesn't work, they will be used for their original intended purpose, in a sea food linguine !

IT should be noted that tench are quite fastidious eaters and will regard cockles as a seafood starter.

May I suggest a main course of meat, possibly Bacon Grill followed by a tasty desert of strawberry boilies.

I don’t blame them john! That menu sounds a piscatorial tour de force!

Well I’ll try to find some cockles for sale again today, will call in Morrisons before Tesco, if that doesn’t work I’ll call on our market and see if they have or can get me some.

I might be wrong but with low temperatures and no end in sight yet,I won't even contemplate what I think of as Summer baits, maggots, corn and maybe small cubes of meat for the foreseeable.

Agree with that, just want to find a supply for when there suitable, if I find some I can always freeze them.

That didn't go quite to plan, I brought the cockles back but ate them all for breakfast. My stomach has priority over all fish.

Had a wander around the harbour on my daily walk this morning, plenty of cockles available, not cheap though at £4 for a small tub.
