Served my apprenticeship on one just like it and others Dates back to around the 30's and still works great. Can't get metric collets for it though which is a bit of a problem sometimes. Half inch bar max.

Shallow water feather inlay stick floats in balsa and aluminium



Made these mainly for chub and grayling.....seam to work a treat


These fish were all caught in about a foot of water trotted long hence the need for really visible tips



All turned on a wood lathe.
These have evolved another step since I made the above.
I will post pics soon.

The seller I bought this from is showing zero stock, I got lucky, it was the lowest price and genuinely from the UK.

If you type mini bead lathe into the ebay search dozens of this same machine appear, many masquerade as UK based sellers but clearly aren’t. If I was buying again I’d choose this buyer who offers click and collect which I’d opt for, it is ten quid dearer though but in my mind still worth it.

I managed to find one for £31 , it arrived yesterday and looks the part . I'll be in the shed on Saturday and giving it a proper work out , thanks for the link:thumbs:

They look as if they would make good margin pole floats,if the eye is reinforced.

The profile very much reminds me of the Dave Harrell Shallow Water Sticks with the wider (and better) tips for visibility where shallow water often means a longer trot.

I have a couple of sets of those and really rate them.

Did he try them as self cocking paste floats in the margins due to aluminium stem and weight of paste, ? Or for big bait use ,?

That's the beauty of making your own...

If you have a set of cherished, shop bought floats and the worst happens there will likely come a day when you can no longer replace it, unlike making your own and then you just knock up another.

I will admit to rather not having to make replacements, but I know i'll never have an incomplete set or be without a favourite
