Great fishing Alan.

What was the water level and water colour like today?
I haven’t been there for quite a while but I intend to fish there a couple of times before the season ends; although I won’t be there at break of day, I’m no longer as hardy as I used to be :)

First time out this year and headed to Loch Duich between Dornie and Inverinate as nice easy (and dry) walk. Got there about an hour after high tide in an unforecast downpour, didn’t bother setting up a lure rod as getting a bit late for the pollack, just the big rod with a rottenish bottom rig ( only “ish” with lead on 20 lb mono as can sometimes pull clear of the snags here), 1/0 and mackerel strip fished only about 30 yards out in probably 50 to 60 ft of water , any further and can’t hold bottom in the tide run and if the lead moves it’s a snag every time.

First chuck, less than half a minute in and a not quite sizeable codling

Followed soon by a cuckoo wrasse and a micro pout.

Missed a good bite, snagged solid and lost the lot and then a run of fish in the next two hours, five more codling , a couple of them over the 35 cm limit (37 and 40, the bigger of which is now mostly inside me, baked with garlic, thyme and lemon ) two dogfish and a slightly bigger pout. The bigger codling also had my hook in it from the earlier lost rig, they’re not the brightest…

No more fish towards low tide or in the first half hour of the flood so called it a day. Turned into a nice day in the end, and relatively inexpensive as only lost five leads this time. The bottom is pretty much a continuation of what you’re standing on, with a lot of weed close in and quite a bit of that “dead man’s fingers” coral on the rocks further out so a bit of a tackle graveyard.

Only fishing about ten yards from the road here but can’t be seen from it. Left my rucksack as usual at the top of the bank and took what I needed down onto the rocks- and halfway through the day had a concerned local motorist stop who’d seen the rucksack, no sign of the owner and thought there could be someone injured….

No sign of the local sea eagles today.

Last week I took a friend of mine to my syndicate lake. He's likes to go pike fishing although the conditions weren't the best for dead baiting being bright with little wind. One of the regulars reckons if it is sunny when pike fishing the lake you are better off playing golf. Anyway we went and it would give me an opportunity to try my new toy namely a Dave Lumb built lure rod which he names the Raider. We had an uneventful morning but by 1pm it clouded over. My mate has having trouble with weed I suggested he moved to the next swim which I found after running a spoon through it was relatively weed free. The rather cold NW wind got up and didn't really fancy our chances. Shortly after moving my mate shouted out as I was having a cuppa. Had he lost the fish I would have thought it was a low double it was only close to the net that the fish woke up and put his powerful 3.5tc rod in full compression. It was a very broad fish my reaction was it would go around 18lb the scales said otherwise 20lb 12oz it was a beautifully marked fish and covered in lice. I think the fish went moving as the water was still cold following the ice on the lake 3 days before.

I met up with my mate & former colleague Thomo for a session with the lure rods at a mutually convenient (half way between us) small Lancs reservoir on a day ticket... we did enjoy a pint afterwards, but otherwise there was nothing to report. Tried various lures & spinners on a multitude of swims around the water to no avail. The bailif intimated that the water was a lot more coloured than usual, coupled with colder than forecast temperatures over night and bright sunshine were to blame. However, there were 4 or 5 others fishing, all on ledgered dead bait... local knowledge goes a long way!

I went back to the Trent today hoping for another zander, on arrival the ground was white with a heavy frost but in minutes it was green not white, nature is astonishing at times even the huge flock of ground feeding fieldfares that kept flying and landing in front of my car as I made my way upriver were no exception. The same applied to a kestrel that flew several inches from my face in its chase after a woodpidgeon and the Egret looking for food on the opposite side of the river. On a human level the red arrows put on their usual slectacular display of aerobatics over Scampton and the surounding lincolnshire countryside.
Did I say I went fishing?
I did'nt see any fish!

Well I went back down to my local River Douglas, scene of my Perch hattrick, because I was convinced there’d be more to give. Could only get there on dark, and fished until I basically couldn’t see the float, and the reward was there thankfully! Finally beat that magic number, which I’ve been obsessed with since October 2019 when I caught my first Perch and second fish, and fell in love. 2lb and 1oz, an empty fish as well, huge frame on it.

Absolutely over the moon

Yesterday Sally and I took a walk along the river bank above Larnagol. The banks are lined with trees, bamboo and the remains of the Japanese Knotweed from last summer. Winter is the time to look for pathways through this jungle in the hope of discovering new swims.

Only one new swim found, it's on a wide section above the weir. When the predator season starts at the end of April I will be back with a view to deadbait for the pike and silure.

Anyway, it was the weir I was most interested in! ........

I had taken walks here a couple of times a few years ago, I still cannot see how to fish it safely! There are warning signs about the "danger of drowning" that must be taken seriously!

At 70 years of age I am past the knotted rope to access that swim. The fallen trees criss-cross each other in that corner, I will have to leave this as literally my "dream swim" - in reality it is a nightmare!

A couple of years ago I tried to access this from downstream with my inflatable boat, but it was another nightmare of shallows and fallen trees. It might be possible to use the boat to access the opposite bank and then walk up to the weir. One day I will fish here!

There is a narrow access to the top of this fish ladder. Canoeists have cut a path through the bushes and bamboo, but there are too many overhanging branches to manage a cast.

Only recently have I seen evidence that barbel can negotiate weirs both moving upstream and downstream. So this fish ladder connects the two most productive barbel stretches I have found, maybe there is regular movement between the two - maybe for carp as well?

After our little walk we drove a few miles upriver to another scenic stretch. I took the opportunity to catapult some boilies into a good swim. Today I will be back with a fishing rod - though I think the water at the weir looked very cold! 🥶

Every day a new adventure on this river! 😍

The river is between the trees and the cliffs opposite. If you can find a swim you are faced with a magnificent view.

My throw away comment about getting a blank in the fresh air yesterday morning came to fruition. What was strange though was that both Gordon and I blanked.

It was very cold in the morning with a breeze running right to left. We both started on the float with maggot but couldn’t get a nibble. I switched to my bomb rod after about 3 hours and had the same lack of success with just the odd twitch. At least the wind dropped and it was pleasantly mild in the afternoon with a touch of wintry sunshine. We saw little signs of fish activity and one other angler on the pole also blanked. It was nice to be out though and lovely to see Gordon again for the first time since before Christmas. One thing we did decide on was that we will not be making donations to save donkeys, bears or one eyed cats anytime soon. Similarly we will not be taking out a prepaid funeral plan.😉

Had a good and bad day yesterday on the lower reaches of a Yorkshire river. It's a fair old walk with your gear and winter kit on, which is getting a bit too much for me, so I took the difficult decision to drop out at the end of this season. Fished the first hour or so alternating between bomb and feeder with mashed bread in it, no bites so decided to fish two rods. Straight bomb fished well downstream and cage feeder fished upstream of the bomb. Had 6 bites, all to the bomb rod, missed one, but caught 3 chub 1st about 3lb, a 4lb 2oz and a cracking 6lb 2oz. All in great solid condition, except the largest was a bit tatty on the tail. Worryingly I snapped off on two fish, the first on the main line at the hook length swivel. I suspect the leger link had wrapped around and caused a kink. The second on the hook length, very close to the hook, this one felt a really good fish. I had firm pressure on it with a fairly soft actioned rod (JW Avon) but certainly not enough to snap off 6lb line. I wonder if a pike had picked up my cheese paste.

Gorgeous - when we used to go to the Loire en vacances I admired a lot of weirs but seem to remember that you weren't allowed to fish them within a specified distance . Has that been relaxed , or was it specific to the Loire ? Or maybe honoured more in the breach than the observance?

I have no idea what restrictions applied to weirs in the past, but on the Lot you are restricted to one rod if fishing within (I think!) 50 metres. Stops the carp guys hogging a prime lure fishing spot with four rods and lines all over the place. Given half-a-chance the carp guys can be ridiculously selfish!

Anyway, I will put up an interesting fishing report after I have had dinner. Just finished a large celebratory whisky, will try not to fall asleep now! ;)

Well just about awake still! Finished my roast chicken dinner with a glass of white wine - all excellent!

It's been a good day. Started really when I put up those photos from my river walk yesterday and today finishing the plan I started when I threw some boilies into a likely swim after that walk.

About 11.30 am I drove up the Lot valley, past a weir which looked a bit turbulent then over a bridge where I could see the height and flow would give me a chance. A few miles further and I arrived at "the Garden" - one of my favourite fishing stretches.....and where I had thrown a few dozen boilies the previous afternoon.

There was a good flow, the power station must have been generating for the lunches to be cooked!

I had two rods today. One was to try for the expected barbel and the other would cast a double 18mm boilie bait as far downstream as I could manage. Not much chance of a carp in February but it's a shame to miss the opportunity.

One of the reasons to pick this swim is to catch the winter sun, I hate getting cold now! Temperatures should reach 14 c this afternoon, despite it being -4 c this morning. In the sun, with no wind, it would feel much warmer!

My barbel rod had a couple of plucks, quite determined pulls but not hooked. I changed to a slimmer bait, two 10mm boilies and a thin coat of paste. Finally hooked a fish, a barbel of about 3.5lbs.

I dug my thermometer out to check the river temperature - it was only just 6 c. Oh Dear! or words to that effect! I felt my chances of a decent catch slipping away!

But I decided to stick it out with the big bait downstream, you never know!

A couple of hours past and I had two definite taps on that rod. Something was showing interest - patience required now!

Then the rod tip pulled down 6" and my hand reached the rod just as the fish took off. This fish ran 50 yds against heavy drag and I had to follow it downstream whilst dragging my landing net. It managed another powerful 50 yd run and was going around the river bend, fortunately the river level was dropping and I waded through the muddy bank to find the solid, stony river bed.

Now I only had my wellies on and the river was thigh deep this side. Easy decision to make, I wanted this fish badly, so I waded out about 20 metres so I could keep my line out of the trees.

Finally I stopped the fish before it reached the log-jam of trees under the cliffs downstream. It took about 15 minutes to bring the fish back upstream, a few more runs but it was tired now. So was I!

When I saw its profile I thought it might make 20 lbs. But once it was in the net I saw the width of its back, then when I lifted the net I judged this carp as close to 30 lb.

So after resting the fish, and regaining my composure, I decide to weigh it properly. Back up the bank it weighed 27lbs....and a bit!

carp 27lb 11 2 23.jpg

A glorious February carp in great condition!

I took it back to the river, rested it for a few minutes. But it was still quite frisky and anxious to go home....

IMG_20230211_161134.jpg

.....into Warp drive......and away!!!!

IMG_20230211_161135.jpg

Despite being exhausted and soaked I put another bait out. One more good take, this time a 4lb barbel....

IMG_20230211_163832.jpg

The sun had now dropped behind the cliffs and I was in shadow. Temperature would drop to freezing again soon so time for me to head home 🐟
