I had a day trotting on the Eden in Kent today. It was a lovely day weather wise, a bit overcast and not too hot. This is a little gem of a fishery and as a OAP membership is only £15 this gives access to another clubs waters on a sharing basis as well.

I caught steadily all day mainly on pressed punched bread. I had; roach, rudd, gudgeon and some chub. No great size but good sport all day and I had the fishery to myself.

There are some larger fish here, but they didn’t show up today.

The start of the season has been slow with carp to just under 20lb, so yesterday I changed tack and wandered down the Avon with a couple of lure rods. I missed several takes but did land a Jack of about 6lb and a long and lean (not skinny), 14lb 4oz beauty. Come January that will be a high double. Rather pleased.👍

Tried the same swim on the Charente as last week. In theory it should hold barbel being on the outside of a bend, deep water a rod length out and hard bottom. I set up a pole rig intending to fish beteeen two tree stumps downstream. There was a nice chub in the swim, very broad, but not hungry. Nothing touched the worm, sweetcorn or luncheon meat so I gave up after 2 hours and tried elsewhere. I will give it another go soon using feeder gear further out.

Second swim 15 minutes upstream is a productive stretch usually. I used a bait dropper to put chopped luncheon meat, mixed cereals and a few pellets on the bottom. Then fished over depth using a 3g float, 14 foot deep with 4 of the 6 pole sections. There were bream and a small barbel passing through the swim, but just a tentative bite on worm that I mised. I had an idea that the huge lob worm was too much for them so I halved it and got another bite that I bumped off. Then as I was lowering the bait back in place there was a bump and a perch hooked itself. I have fished the middle Charente for 11 years and never had a perch until last week. Now I caught another.

The new seat box was used today. I sold the Continental one with legs on a frame and got one with internal feet that can be adjusted for height. It takes all the trays and drawers from the other one and is a fair bit lighter and more comfortable to carry. I need a back pole rest though. I had to use the carrying handle of my net bag as a makeshift pole rest.

I had a hospital apt at 11 am, had a coming together with another car on the way home - a lorry had parked itself on a roundabout and the other driver and I scraped each other trying to get past him and off. I think it was probably my fault, technically. The bloke agreed to price it up and contact me before we involve insurance. If his dents and scratches cost a bomb, at least I've got my no-claim protected. I watched the cricket til 2pm, then thought what the hell, I'll go down the river.

Alan was asking about mussels. I've found these great little women's hair bands, way better than pellet bands. You can loop them on the hook, spread them out with your fingers, so no need for banding tools, and easily get two mussels in them. Line your mussels up soixante neuf style and the dumbell shape centres the band. I put two bands on

Those Hertfordshire sophisticates may insist on something less common, but barbel on the Derwent, Dove, Soar and Trent don't say no to a mussel or two

A few barbel put the poxy car business into perspective

When the swim died, I moved to a shallower one where I had to go back to the car for a different landing net - the deep one I'd been using is impossible to hold in the flow. I only got one bite, but it was from a pretty beefy chub

I've got the cricket recorded, so here goes.

Back on usual fishery yesterday, only 2 on when I arrived but numbers soon rose to 9, picked a swim between the island and top bank, which is fairly narrow at a round 10 metre, fished pole at top kit plus two sections, with small prawns or paste, also as a lot of the carp were on the top I kept throwing a few mixers in till I got them competing for them and then had a go for them on the top, managed 3 carp like this, plus lost one in the rushes by the island.

on the pole I’d a mixture of F1s, skimmers and a few roach, around 1pm noticed plumes of silt coming up in the margin were I’d been feeding a few soaked micros, so switched to just the top kit about 4 foot out, and it fished better than further out, did get a tench and a crucian plus a perch, plus F1s and skimmers, also had the float bury and shoot out three times but missed them, could have been barbel but I’ll never know.

so a good day out in nice weather, and not has hot as it has been so very pleasant day out.

I managed an afternoon on the tidal Trent yesterday hoping for a big roach.
Finally set up at 3pm I baited my swim with creed wheat and hemp with my overly large baitdropper ( a 3/4 mastic tube).
Bait were four 8mm pellets on a hair and my first bite was a 5"dace!!
Second bite was a roach Bream hybrid,
Third bite was an ide that was some lb and a half.
My final bite was my target fish of a half pound or so.
Not the best of days fishing but it was the nicest of places as the sun was going down and the river took on the appearance of perfect calm.

Good luck for tomorrow. I’ve had a crack at most types of angling and a day spent trotting on a river takes some beating for sheer enjoyment.

Just to say Kev I tried meatballs yesterday after having a shedful on pellet, used aldi's in rich gravy, quite enlightening, they got whiff of them almost immediately and quarter the area until spotting it,then they kept spooking away, but the flavour got the better of them,so after several visits they sucked it in,these are big baits,at times I could see three 6" barbel trying to rip chunks off,say 30mm dia, smell tasty, but I'd bet they are foul to eat....

There are some ignorant barstewards about. I have had the same occasionally. There are miles of river with no one fishing and these a/holes chuck sticks right next to you. Some of them do it on purpose.

I was in the disabled match at Cotswold water park today . I had a practice last week on one of the pools to be used .
Guess what ,,? Today I drew the other pool .
So off I went to it and found I could more or less park at my peg .
Out with the seatbox and usual attachments and trays , pole rollers set up , groundbait mixed and casters and 2mms watered.
First set up was the trusty Speedcast feeder rod , and 4010 baitrunner loaded with 6lb line .A inline 30g lead free running to a 14mwg hook with quickstop and a 4" hooklength of 5lb line .
The reason for starting off on the lead was a few were setting up method feeders and I thought straight lead would be less splash and could ping pellets over it .
Next up was a 14g pellet waggler float ,locked in place with 3 float stops , the reel was PI Inception 4000 loaded with 6lb Maxima straight through to 16mwg hook with pellets band .
Then the margin pole , 3 rigs all the same 4x14 PI shallow floats on 5lb mainline to 3lb hooklength and a 16 PI barbless hook . The reason for the margin pole was the water I was on had some big carp in it I didn't fancy using main pole .
Started off on the feeder after putting some bait in the margins , maggots and 2mms to the left and casters and 2mms to the right . And watched the bloke 2 pegs to my right land a low double carp a couple of minutes after the all in .
Anyway had a couple of bites on the feeder but didn't connect , The bloke 2 pegs to my right must have been fishing in an aquarium he had a few more carp . After just over an hour I had a carp, took me a good 5 minutes to land it , after that it went dead , so primed the margins again ,I was doing this on a little and often basis ,
Went out at 8 metres on the pole in 2'6" of water, I had no variation in depth from the margin to 8 metres . Maggot on the hook and I was catching a couple of roach . So to speed things up it was out with the 4 metered whip, rigged up with an AS3 float in 0.5g 5.8lb to 3.8lb and a 16 pellet hook .
I stayed on this line catching silvers , only coming off it to see if any more carp showing across to the island .
With half an hour to go I tried to force the margins by lashing in the maggots and casters . Nothing doing , no sign of anything not even bait robbing perch .
So back on the whip for a few more .
Come the weigh in I had 9lb of silvers and the carp that looked 10lb weighed 8lb so had a total of 17 dead .
The bloke 2 pegs away had 120lb of carp and some silvers . Bloke next to me had 21lb of silvers ,he didn't bother targeting the carp .
My mistake was spending to long trying for them instead of concentrating on the silvers .
The weights from the pool I practiced on were dismal 12lb won it and 10lb second and I think 7lb third .
The pool I was on was 120lb+ ,then 77lb second and the blokes next to me 21lb 3rd .
I reckon if I hadn't faffed around for the carp I would have come 3rd instead of 5th 18lb came 4th, I think 31 fished it .
For £7 which included a breakfast, packed lunch and coffees during the match , a BBQ afterwards and some brilliant prizes for the winners . Shimano reels , Drennan luggage ,rods .
And there was a raffle afterwards at a £1 a strip of tickets with some brilliant prizes .
It was a great day , South Cerney AC has its own licenced club house , BBQ , heated outdoor seating area .
Social membership is £5 , fishing membership is £70 and they have some brilliant waters .

had a 6 hour session on a local lake today as it was my only opportunity to fish with my mate as its my only weekend day off in july.we fished from 1-7pm as i was on shift last night.very breezy wind but managed to find 2 pegs in the top corner with a huge tree providing cover.fished the pole with maggots corn pellets prawns and mussels on a size 14 hook and had over 40 roach.the red eyes were intercepting every bait presented.my mate did manage a mirror which weighed in at 9lb 6oz taken on 2 pieces of corn but all his other fish were roach.so its back on the rivers on tues for me and a session on the wharfe. :)

I mentioned I set a pellet waggler up , I never used it, the breeze started and was to much to make using it viable , I saw one bloke try it and after a few casts gave up , His float was being pulled away from the feed , Even though I had 14g float set up it would have been the same . I had a 2oz tip in the feeder rod and that was to counter any tow and wind that had gotten up.

Near ye village of Tardebigge!!
I had an interesting day at Top Barn Fisheries. I fished the match lake and had a favourite waggler rod set up with an ancient Abu 505 as well as a Normark 2.5 lb test curve carp rod with a Shimano Aero Baitrunner.

The carp rig was baited with a pop up boilie and within seconds of the bait settling, I had a screaming run and the rod bent over double! The carp headed for a sunken tree and after I had pulled it away from that it tore off towards the bank and some tree roots and overhanging branches and at this point, the line parted!

The waggler rod had constant action with perch, roach, Rudd and an ee!.This was the first eel that I have caught in a very long time- probably 35 years or so!

The maggots were sprayed in regularly and this brought the big boys out to play, as I then had a low double figure carp and this tested the outfit! I regretted leaving my power waggler rod behind! I then had a good mirror carp on the waggler.

I had some smaller common carp and mirror carp on the proper carp set up, but lost several large carp and I reckon they were bigger than the stated “carp up to 15 lbs”!

Annoyingly the line got caught behind the winding cup on the 505 and I decided to pack it away after dealing with the tangled line. I heard the bite alarm beep briefly and I thought that I had knocked the line or rod, but I then realised that the fish was coming towards me! I lost this fish too!

I’ll be back with heavier gear

I rang the club Secretary to see if they'd sent off my book for some new stretches. No, but I could pick it up from him on the river bank if I liked. That's how I came to be fishing for bream in pretty unsuitable conditions - a Sunday afternoon with the river dropping clear, bright sun a lot of the time, a good few boats, and the willows thrashing in a blustery wind. Just getting my excuses in.

I was actually quite pleased with the place, and it's always nice to visit a new stretch for the first time. A short drive, 6 miles or so. Gated access, a track along the river and the swims all comfortable but natural enough.

Bf10.jpg

The shoals of bream are big, but there's plenty of water in with them - this is a wide stretch. That's Attenborough Nature Reserve on the far side, named after the village and the famous naturalist who opened it in 1966.

Bf11.jpg

Under better conditions, I'll ball some bait in at the start, but I fished it conservatively, just feeding some corn, small pellets and dead maggots through a 1oz medium size feeder. The channel is only 15-20m out on my side, so no need for heavy leads.

After 3 hours I hadn't had a bite and I was thinking of getting out of the wind. Then some roach turned up and I caught these sporadically. for an hour. After that, my ears were ringing and I gave it best. You can see how clear the water is, even with the winds, the boats and my feet stirring it up.
