If i'm totally honest Rob I often leave the plastic on the cork until it crinkles up round the edges as it's really tight fitting and alkward to cut it off without nicking the cork. Once the placcy has gone wrinkly or loosend round an edge i'll carefully remove it. It doesn't bother me being left on and i've never had any problems caused by it as it seems some have.

It's just a pedantry thing. I was of the same mind, but in the end I couldn't bear to have some with and others without, so it all came off.:D

Great pics Tigger and super barbel! What was the last pin pictured at about £50?

I know I will eventually end up with one; it is inevitable!;)

Hello there open match today was switched from Top and High pools to Jenny,s and High..I drew Jenny,s 21,which can be ok,but today the whole pool has shutdown, ive not caught shallow,or down my edges, ive struggled for 22 F1,s and some skimmers for 44-8-0,by fishing maggot on the deck at 5m,potting in maggot and waiting for bites, only good enough for 3rd on pool, but good enough for a section win;):D.....Barry Duggan drew peg 17,and did the business, winning with 68-0-0,2nd was Dennis Lutwyche, with 56-10-0...quite a few dnw,s and low weights,on the pool today.i dont know how they got on ,on High pool,as didnt stay...No fishing for a while now,cos ive got to work:mad::mad:..Tight lines,Gazza:D

I’ve had a very enjoyable day trotting the river with a fellow FM’er who I had previously not had the pleasure of meeting and one with a varied and interesting angling background.

Given the river's recent poor form I played safe and opted for a fast and shallow stretch of water which saw us into bits from pretty much the word go, the hope was always for a decent barbel to come along and after a few hours on the light stick rigs we had amassed bleak, chublets, dace (some plumpers around 6ozs or so amongst the smaller ones), gudgeon (Richard/****y123 had some proper clonkers) and roach.

I then decided to rig up the long rod with a heavy Avon float and shotting, I upped the feed and the bunch of maggots on a size 14 inititially accounted for a slightly better stamp of fish and within quick succession I then took three barbel…

Of around 1 –2 ozs apiece!

To be fair I was probably as made up to see those as I would have been with a few of the larger stamp size and it will remain one of angling’s many little ironies that we both caught barbel of a much rarer size to rod and line than those which we were hoping for and never showed.

By late afternoon and after a whole day in the river we were both about knackered and so we called it a day and like a mirage in a sun parched desert my guest produced a can of beer form the back of the car, it would have been the understatement of the year to say it hit the spot very nicely!

Thanks for the great company Richard and look forward to doing it all again once me legs have recovered and the waders have dried out :)

Thought I'd give myself ample time to drive down the M40 to Oxford so I left home at 6:45 . M25 was a flipping car park as usual down to the M40 junction at Denham. Once on the M40 it was a doddle until I turned off onto the A40 into Oxford. Solid! Crawled for miles round the ring road then crawled towards the City centre before finally reaching Binsey and the wonderful river Thames on the Medley stretch, a journey of 2 hours of hell soon evaporated and I paid my pools money and drew a short walk peg. The river was tap water clear and virtually no flow at all which made me decide to set up a waggler rod and a feeder rod.
At the whistle at 11:30 I chucked a cage feeder with groundbait 3/4 across and it was instant bites from small roach and gudgeon but it became tricky winding them in due to weed beds out from my bank. I literally had to stand up on my foot plate and skim them across the surface. No bream appeared to be out there so I tried wagg and magg down the middle set just over the top of the weed and sprayed maggots vie catty every chuck. Small roach and some big gudgeon gave me a bite a chuck and the occasional perch turned up too.

By 5:30 and the whistle I'd amassed over a hundred small fish and weighed in 6lb 11 oz for second in section of 6 and a nice brown envelope...
Many had pike trouble and some gave up early, understandably as it was rock hard in the poor conditions.

20lbs won it with bits and two bream plus a big perch in the last hour...

12 fished...

Left my bloody phone at home in my hurry to leave early so no pics this time:eek:mg:

A new reel arrived today for me to play with so after tea I nipped to a small river to test it out. The river was pretty low and only a foot deep but I had plenty of small and large dace with some small chub in the mix. A fresh water shark snatched one of my dace and cut my line off...no table manners them esox!
The reel was excellent and i'm happy with it :).
A couple of pic's of small dace, I only took 'em because it was the first outing of the reel....

Oh, forgot to say the 6lb mono straight through didn't put off any of the finicky dace!

Stuck on the chuffin M25 somewhere between Heathro
I enjoyed meself so much on Sat running a stick through that I arranged another session this afternoon with the Big Feller at Windsor. The plan was to see if the better roach came on a bit towards dusk.

I fished the same peg as last time. I was intending to fish elsewhere but the BF went all " old soldier" on me so I let the poor old boy have first choice. Of course the Git picked the swim I fancied.....but what the hell, who cares ?

Started well with a few roach and dace and a lot fewer perch than before. Maggot over hemp again and I'm still having trouble finding hookable grains in this tinned stuff. TBH I get fed up very quickly having to rebait every chuck when the dace are about. Anyway......first 90 mins was OK if a bit inconsistent. The second 90 was a bit of a struggle and I had to keep altering things to keep the bites going....the roach got smaller and fish kept falling off for no reason. In the end I got fed up and swapped my big oversized barbless size 18 for a smaller wide gape barbed 18. That worked very well and I lost only a couple more fish.

Last 90 mins was amazing. The roach suddenly switched on, the dace and perch vanished and from around 4-45 until 6-15 it was almost a fish a chuck. Nothing of any great size....just lovely plump, pigeon chested quality roach with the occasional kipper dace. The locks had stopped so the river was running at a very gentle pace and the roach were lined up right under where I was feeding . The float barely travelled 6 foot before burying.

In the absence of tares we both had a tub of 4mm black pellet hoping to con the roach into thinking they were tares. I had loads of bites but couldn't hit them on my little hook so abandoned these for the maggot. Phil persevered and caught on the pellets and the last 20 useable elderberries in Berkshire. God knows where he finds them because I can't.

Anyway....a thoroughly enjoyable session once more. I guess in around 4 hours I had about 12-14 lb of fish and most of them roach. Phil had about the same though he had several gudjin ( I didn't which is a shame) and the honour of catching the solitary blik went to me once more.

Once again I absolutely loved it. I was brought up on this sort of fishing and it's been ages since I've done this. It really is going back to what I love best......trotting a stick float for roach on the pin. What is not to like ?

What was the new reel Tigger? It looked rather modern! Does one need a variety of centre pin reels as they all do the same don't they! I accept some are better than others.!

You only need one pin Mike, and that's if you actually want one in the first place. I just like playing about with them. I have a small collection but I usually sell one to gain one, I recently sold a browning rotator to pay for this one...as I say I just enjoy using different ones ;).
If you do only have one pin it might be worth getting one with a removable line guard.

Sorry Mike, I forgot to tell you the name of the reel I posted a pic of when you asked what it was....it was an okuma aventa pro.

And a couple of spare spools to go with it if you don't want to buy several pins.
I have 2 spare spools loaded with different lines for my Sheffield.

However; I still have three other centrepins including a prototype from when I used to test centrepins in my spare time for an engineer who had bought some dyes and had decided to start making them back in the early 80s.

I find that once you buy one pin it's very hard to resist buying more Lol.

I'm disappointed. I thought for a moment you'd been fishing and posted to tell us how you got on mike.:(

I have only been reticent in divulging the results of my latest trip 'cos I knew what was coming - from you!

'Sperimenting with a pole and single maggot on the end-peg of a local canal-style commercial.
- reached round to get the 4th section and there goes my top3 across the 'cut' being toed by something!
It fetched-up on the far bank in the reeds which I trooped round to - landing net in hand to fight the way through the RBW jungle - to find the fish still attached, but tangled in the bankside growth.

I hand-lined it out through the herbiage and netted the 12lb carp - unhooked and returned it - then managed to extricate the top3 which had to be shipped to hand to get it back through the jungle - and eventually back to my peg!

The session ended OK with 2 more Carp, a 2.5lb Chub, a few dozen little roach and a dozen or so gudgeon - though I suspect it was the same little b*gger every time!

How do you hang on to your pole when reaching round for another section? - to prevent this sort of occurrence - or has it happened to you too? Did you give yourself a BA Award?

PS: I've just realised I might have mistakenly interpreted the 'mike' of the comment!

Tight Lines

Geenie, I was tempted to give you an award but decided to forgo it seeing your post was ' on topic ' with no mention of f***ing centrepins.

Maybe we should have another on going thread....centrepin catch reports :p.

Actually it might be a good idea :D

What ?  Heresy I say !

You may only need one pin at a time but they are herd animals and should not be kept in isolation. There is always room for another.

Skippy, your right lol....same goes for rods also :w

Have a try on the Wey next time you go - it's solid with Roach and some real good ones amongst them.
