Had another day after the roach today, getting a bit obsessed with these at the moment, caught eight today, to about a pound, they are in really good condition now,I tried putting some gurum masala on the maggots today, seemed to help I had lots of bites some really wanted it, really pulled the rod round, one took so hard it snapped the two and a half pound hook length, but the little perch were a nuisance loads of the bites were down to these.

As I came off I met one of the other members who was leaving as well, when I told him I'd been after the roach, he said have a look at this photo I've got in the car, he showed me one he'd caught last year, three pound two ounces, what a roach, it was a belter, caught on luncheon meat.

Something to aim for.

Piking on the reservoir again this morning, three rods out deadbaiting ,sat down with a coffee waiting for it to get light.Cool SE breeze ruffling the surface and eventually had a 3lber by bouncing a shad along the bottom,20 minutes later an 8lber on dead bait, still hadn't got light.
Dull & murky when I left around 1pm then it got dark again.

Out on the upper Soar near Narborough from first light today - Ok 8am.
Third trot on a bend with bread, a dace of 4oz or so,next trot through another dace of nearly 8oz.A few trots later, the float buried, struck, rod bent over thought I was snagged, then it moved.A few minutes later a chub of 3lb 12oz in the net followed by a brown trout of 1lb 8oz.
Reset the float to stret peg under my feet as the bank had a massive undercut and so I could have a coffee - result - another big signal crayfish that liked bread.Three times a kingfisher flashed by heading downstream.
Moved up stream and had a half pound roach and a chub on quivertipped bread and another move upstream to another bend yielded two more chub to 2lb.
As I walked back to the farm a pair of kingfishers zoomed by heading downstream - must find out what the attraction is one day.

A slightly earlier arrival trentside this morning as I wanted to look at another swim with a nice inviting slack area but sadly the immediate upstream swim had two bivvy boys in it so
i made my way back to the swim i fished earlier in the week where I could see no one had occupied it since I had. Happy with that I soon had two rods out baited with bleak. It was a long wait, one where I thought things wouldnt work out as I'd like but around two thirty my downstream rod cast to the lower part of the slacks crease came to life with a little screamer of a run, one that just never stopped trapping downstream so I lifted into it and was relieved to feel a fish instead of thin air like my last run two days earlier.
It was a zander, not big, maybe four pounds tops but it was the result I was after.

There
Got my old Normark Nova match rod out and had a silver bash on a local water. Loads of roach, skimmers and the odd rudd. Strangely no perch.

What a sweet little light line rod coupled to a Drennan float reel.

All on frozen dead un's flavoured with curry powder.
Only problem is I cannot get the curry smell from my hands.

Oh yes and 5 mid single carp which seem to be still active in this mild spell.

The fog never lifted all day which meant I never saw a soul all day. Perfect.

I could probably say my last three sessions with the last one yesterday, have been a mixture of those described above by seth49 and John Step, including watching carp gathered on the surface of the lake and just milling around, reminiscent of a warm summers day, and this on every day.
I arrived in darkness at 07.30 so had plenty of time to walk (carefully!) around the water to kill time, and it was then I saw the carp in a tight group of half a dozen fish, although TBH I had it in my mind they might be roach - something I've seen in the past. Any thoughts of this were quickly dispelled come 9am when a swooping seagull caused a massive swirl and a 10' square area of fish disbursed so a lot more than a 'few' fish!

My roach fishing has been pretty good with fish to just over the lb, but it has been a case of searching them out with usual a couple of fish followed by not a bite of any sort. some of the better fish actually fell to single red maggots (with Garum Masala added) and these fished handlebar fashion in only 2' of water, fished at distance As I've said before this is not an easy way to fish as any attempt to strike too hard can easily mean the float ending up in your lap or worse, wrapped around the rod tip! I know in my mind the solution is to use a Pole, but I'm just not that keen on them...

As an alternative I move my chair and managed to sit side on to the water and strike sideways with the line buried under the water tight to the long float with only the tip showing. Fair to say I miss many bites but I also caught good fish, although to begin with I was striking into thin air until I had a think about how the maggot was impaled onto the hook, causing the fish to perhaps 'snatch' at the bait without taking it in the mouth Normally, I just nick the maggot in the side to produce the 'handlebar' effect, but on retrieval I noticed the maggot was hanging off the hook at a strange angle and not horizontal as in my mind, it should be. Even on a 20 hook it just looked wrong, so I decide to hook the bait through the middle in both directions and this kept it absolutely 'horizontal' rather than 'hanging'..........

Always nice when a change such as this makes all the difference and I have to say it did make a difference on this particular occasion, with hardly a lost fish after that. I also have to say that the maggot lightly hooked (over many years) has never been an issue before, so why this week?? Who knows....................
I did think of running a thread 'Fishing shallow at distance, with running line' but I'm sure the answer would probably suggest I buy a Pole, and they may well be right!!!

This past week has ben a delight to be out and a pleasure to sit in total peace and quiet as not a soul did I see over four days. The weather has been perfect as well....

Out tomorrow and 2/3 times in the run up to Xmas, with the weather looking fair..

ps On Wednesday, with the rare sun poking through for about an hour I tried hemp and managed to catch two fine roach, but once the sun disappeared......................well, you know what's coming!

Tee Cee.
I've experienced the same as you when fishing short...line around the rod top and worse. Natural reaction to snatch too hard.
Re maggot hooking also the same but resolved by hooking so point comes out of point of maggot.
Try your way next time. Cheers

I think I should have taken the opening blooper as a sign of things to come today!

Arrived at the river before dawn and set off, laden with tackle, to my intended swim but it wasn't for some time that the thought suddenly occurred to me that my bait bucket felt rather light.

A quick glance down revealed that I had been carrying the detached handle whilst the bucket of maggots remained beside the car! :eek:mg:

Eventually I got to my swim and with the intention of repeating last week's good day but I had made the fatal error of thinking that what worked then would work again today given the near identical conditions.

The first hour was quite good with plenty of small perch and chub on float and maggot to around three quarters of a pound and then it just died, it soon became apparent that these were the stragglers just coming off the night shift.

A few different rigs and constant feeding still couldn't buy any interest except for one small chublet halfway through the day and with it dropping quite chilly towards dusk I didn't need much persuading to call it a day.

It was nevertheless a pleasant day out with the smug feeling of having absolutely no remorse for those out doing their Christmas shopping :D

Still chuckling to meself about that bait bucket... :w

Back piking today with a misty start on the reservoir, had just cast the last of three deadbaits out and the first one was away,a pike 12lb 6oz in very good condition.Had numerous single beeps during the day and one aborted take where the bait was pinched off the hooks. The sun eventually broke through making it a hot plod back to the car with all the tackle.

Had the last hour out again today, there was a strange atmosphere on the bank and the river had a spooky fog hanging over it. The temp's where down to 3 degrees but the fish where still obliging well enough, I lost count of how many I had but it was quite a few, pity there wasn't anything of any size but better than nowt ....

No idea why the pic's are upside down........I think i've Binkerd 'em LOL

Thank's to whoever straightened up the pic's :).

Club Christmas match today at marsworth on the GUC. Quite wide on this pound so it was waggler across to the garden wall and 3m whip to hand.

Tried whip and squatts to start but not a sniff. Went across on the wagg also not a sniff. After a while people were walking around and moaning how carp it was so it wasn't just me. The 2 fishing nearest the road bridge were catching gudgeon and tiny roach on the pole long and went on to win first and second with 2lb8 and 1lb 8...
I eventually got a bite on the whip line and landed a small perch but that was it...

Better than blanking...

22 fished ....

Decided to spend the day dead baiting on a gravel pit.
Managed a single 7lb pike, which is pretty good going for me!

Ironically the only bite wasn't by design - It came on a bait I'd temporarily dropped in the margin to move out of the way whilst I re-cast the other rod.
Was quite surprised to see my float doing the dance of death under my feet!

With my last two visits to the Salwarpe producing a solitary Dace I was contemplating either the Stour (three visits, two fish) or the Severn (couldn't be *rsed to set up a feeder) so as this was probably my last river session of the year went for third time lucky at Hawford Bridge. Took maggot (Itchen survivors), worm, bread and half a pint of vac-packed castors that have been sat in the fridge for a good month. Decided to start with double castor on an 18, the river was about 2'0 down on my last trip but barely ambling through with hardly enough pace to even spin the pin. Result, first trot produced a Chub of about two pounds, methinks "here we go"...............wrong:rolleyes:
Half an hour later, another Chub, half the size. Went close on 45 mins until float dipped again, Chub must have been at least 3oz, darted into the weeds beneath my feet and transferred the hook:eek:mg: Tried two more swims before dropping back to my "banker":wh, finally hooked into something a little better, another Chub which I weighed at 2.10, still can't beat the three mark on this stretch. Finished with a 7" Dace and another half pound Chub all caught on castor, not a sniff on worm or red maggot:confused:

Next trip will be Roach bashing in South Wales Yaki Da:)
