A superbly proportioned barbel Graham, well done :)

---------- Post added at 10:51 ---------- Previous post was at 10:37 ----------

I seem be running out of opportunities to fish the Stour before the end of season. I could fish it today and tomorrow but it's well up and coloured and heavy rain overnight and now will only add to that. When I say "fish it today and tomorrow", that would be sat behind a feeder and, well, that would just not be right.... would it! :eek:mg:

Next opportunity will be Sunday (can't remember the last time I fished on a weekend!) or more likely, on Monday. So no more rain please and the river might be spot on.

Almost a repeat of this time last year as the river came up so fast. Fortunately it dropped enough to be perfect at the end and the chub went on the munch. My last two sessions then were full of sparkling chub and included the exceptional new best for me. Not expecting to get anywhere near that but a couple like these will be very welcome.

:)

A bad headache forced me to change my day yesterdy so it was a very late morning start on a nearby pond for a few silvers.
A little drinking straw float lightly shotted with a maggot just off bottom gave me a few small fish but I thought things could be improved so I laid on some four inches which improved thi gs no end.
The small fish dissapeared and over the next two hours I landed twentysix good roach to twelve ounces along with three chunky rudd untill two -- loody swans appeared and upended all over my very shallow baited area,--- Grrrrrrr !
Oh well, time on my hands so I picked up the litter that had been left by "anglers" , binned it and went home , nice session nonetheless !.

Weirdly, despite heavy rain overnight and a fair bit throughout today, the Stour appears to be slowly dropping and is currently at .69m at 6pm this evening at the Throop Gauge. That is still a bit high for my preference but I'll have a close look tomorrow and if it's still slowly dropping I'll be chucking a few pints of red in.

:)

In any event, barring a deluge, Friday and Saturday should be spot on.

Just to whet the appetite here's another "hybrid" in perfect winter condition!

:D

Had the afternoon on the local canal

very nice afternoon it was as well , Thought i would give one of the pins an outing today .
Realistically i fished too heavey today with a 1.5 gram Avon float to a size 18 hook started on red maggot and ws having a nice collection of perch biggest to about 8 to 10 ounces switched to worm and the perch did a runner but out came the skimmers and a small roach or 2 back onto maggot back came the perch no real monsters but a fun afternoon .

Must try to get to the Stour on Sunday before the close starts for a final fling see if i can actually get something worth while out of the place ..

PG ...

I went to my syndi water to do a bit of maggoteering for a change. Its been mostly pike and zander since November.

What struck me most was how much I needed to remember where everything was in my tackle containers. Also how fingers and thumbs I felt with size 20s and 0.10 bottoms instead of 15lbs bs and trebles!

I had 4 lumpy perch and 2 netable roach and several bits. A nice day in sunshine for a change and with the added attraction of having no need of thermals.

Has spring sprung I wonder?

Sadly my first foray at trotting will have to wait until june:( I will however have a day( maybe less) at beachcasting for whatever I can catch! A few rays of the sun will be nice;)

I have to take the car for its first " contrôle technique " ( mot) tomorrow which should be fun. The fishing is afterwards : I will try some artificial crabs as bait!

Yea unfortunately mate the Lea is probably one of the hardest chub rivers in the country to fish, reason being is that it probably has some of the biggest chub in the country aswell, with this you've then got some of the very best river anglers on there in the country.

It sounds like you could be fishing the Kings weir or Fishers green sections of the river,

I've been a member of kings weir on and off for some 28 years and actually took me the best part of 3-4 seasons to crack it,

The best thing that I ever learnt about fishing there for the huge chub was how to touch ledger :D
Lucky I was shown many years ago by who is regarded as possibly one of the best touch ledger anglers in the country " Bob Buteox " president of the Chub study group when I got invited to his house for the day,

Since the days of learning to touch ledger up on the Lea I've never looked beck on it :)

Be lucky mate

Yes I fish the Fishers Green section. I can't complain, I had a 7lb 12oz chub last summer. But with the recent stocking I thought it might have made it easier to get a bite.

I did give it a go this afternoon and found it rising very slowly, very pacey and a reasonable colour. Very hard on the float but they finally switched on late afternoon. I managed a few nice chub in the last hour or so including a very nice "6". I reckon it will be spot on on Saturday and Sunday!

Went back to the River Wreake this morning to find it even higher than my last visit but at least not the colour of stewed tea.
Quivertipped crust brought a 4oz dace to hand followed by a roach of half a pound which required use of the net.
Changed to flake with no success, and ended up on cheese paste and whilst chatting to a dog walker, saw the tip ping round and managed to drag a reluctant 2lb 10oz chub to the landing net. Later something pinched a massive lob worm off the hook leaving me striking at fresh air.
A change of swim needed ,wound in the float which had been drifting back and forth in a big back eddy I discovered a bullhead had managed to get both red worms and a size 12 hook into its mouth - released safely.
Downstream started off with legered crust ,then flake which resulted in another pristine chub of 2lb 2oz,switching baits again and something else pinched lobworms off my hook, bites hard to see with a blustery wind shaking the rod constantly.
Still plenty of fieldfares about, along with two very noisy buzzards ,sparrowhawk and a green woodpecker.
