A very cold day, but a good one to blow out the tubes, so to speak, no bites and I don’t think that any of the other brave souls did either. A real pleasure warming up in the pub after we’d had enough!

Hi s63, Its a Westin Shad Teez 16cm, with a 5 g Westin Jighead.
Really mad rolling action on a slow retrieve; looks like its almost going upside down sometimes.

One more pic:)

Only catch updates from me relate to some unimpressive whiting off the beach. Had a couple of trips to the beach in hope of cod. Might have to switch target to burbot as cod seem a bit thin on the ground.
I do have some maggots waiting patiently in the shed. Two weeks since I bought them and only a few are now turning to casters. I anticipate a bit of tiddler bashing and try for a pike or two. Seems fitting with snow laying just now. Maybe not today tho.

Three weeks without fishing is a long time so to be out local this afternoon with a friend chasing chub was nice change.
Even the cold couldn't dampen the pleasure but it was hard going.
Quivertipped flake and liquidised bread was the offer in a not remotely like a chub swim as you could imagine , one that was so slow it could have been going backwards but tho nothing happened for a few hours two nice fish rolled over my bait as the light began to fade, a confidence booster that was welcome , the downside was that I had promised to be home by six pm.
Darkness fell, an owl was hooting in the trees opposite and reluctantly I put my gear away 'crept my rod and landing net-- three more minutes and I would pack those away too.
Pip pip, the bobbin lifted slightly then banged up to the rod, I was in, and playing a nice fish that tho tricky on a snow covered footstep was safely netted .
Not big as chub go but very welcome at 3-9.
The fat lady had sung !
Back home I was castigated for liquidising a fresh marks and Spencer's loaf, so many ups and downs!!!!

An enjoyable day piking but without much caught. I covered a LOT of the Witham and side drain today for just two jacks.
However the sun was bright despite the bitter wind and the wildlife was evident.
I even had a free airshow from the practising Typhoons.
Amazing how they are able to shoot skyward at near the vertical.

With next couple of weeks taken up with social gatherings, and fishing on hold ‘til next year, I decided to take a chance in the unfavourable snow melt aftermath for a couple of hours on a local stream. There was quite a bit of ‘ponding’ on the fields for the stroll across and, arriving at the water, it was obvious that level had risen some 6 inches in the last week with a fair bit of movement. In the two and a half years since moving this is the first time I’ve seen any real colour, or flow, we seem to miss all the rain.

A few weeks ago

Anyway, armed with the old Titan, pin and a few reds (and some turned red casters) I managed to coax out a few dace from a few hundred yards upstream from the prolific warmer weather swim that was now charging through rather than gin clear and sluggish. What a difference a few weeks makes this time of year. The law of $od predicts that the water should be spot on for next week with rising temperatures and fining down but...............there’s always next year..

I felt like getting out, but the rivers are full of snow-melt. The roach in the Old lake were probably a safer bet, but I fancied trying for perch in the Deep Lake. It seemed to get a couple of degrees colder as I drove out of town, and the lake was looking pretty but wrong for fishing, with blue sky, bright sun and an icey look to the water.

I started fishing a 10.30, and fed one swim with a few maggots and the other with a bit of baitdroppered chopped worm. By 12.30, I'd had one bite, despite working away at it with either maggot or a piece of worm on the hook:

I don't usually throw in the towel, but I had no confidence the fish would feed any time soon, and by 1.00 - the wind had got up and the temperature dropped further - I was buying a sandwich and a coffee. On the way home, I stopped to check out a marina that I fish when the river is up and coloured; today, it was 3-4 feet up, but clear. Nowhere looks right just now. The one bloke fishing for roach was getting nowhere, but a pike angler had a 12lb fish, and I got a lesson in unhooking them. So the day wasn't entirely wasted.

So I needed to get out can't think why, the last time I wetted a line was when I caught some decent dace back in November so I was off out given I had a few hours to kill regardless of the weather, I was hoping there would still be some scenic snow as it's been years, maybe even decades since I've fished in the white stuff, but I guess frozen slush doesn't count.

Whilst thinking how cold my waders that I had stupidly left in the cold were I chatted to a couple of earlies who had packed up with one chub between them but things were always going to be hard, their spirits were up and even the guy who blanked was on good form, fair play to those guys, and after chatting to them for a little while it dawned on me it was almost 2pm, oh well it felt good to be out short session or not.

I love these cold spells though as it tends to stop the small stuff feeding and every bite is usually a decent stamp of fish, saying that though it was proper parky with a northerly coming off the meadow behind me. Stupid wooly hat wasn't doing the job a fashion disaster should so it was a hood up job and the windchill was finally thwarted courtesy of German army surplus. Wunderbar! Plus stupid wooly hat of course.

As for the fishing when I finally got started, well the river had a bit of colour although I suspect it was salty snow melt and the extra water gave the float good run through, I think that's the first time this year I could say that though. The fish only started feeding as the light faded, luckily I had a head torch as it's hard fiddling with no8s in fading light, bites were few and far between but resulted in decent fish, topped by a chunky barbel, oops, oh well who knew! mind you I did fancy getting one ;), not quite a 'barbel in the snow' but a 'barbel with a bit of snow on that shady hill in the distance' I'll take that any day.

Blimey that line your using is very low diameter, it's quite impossible for me to see it!
You must have good eyesight artist?.....being able to see such a small float tip in the dark. I would have beèn unable to see it myself even if fishing under the rod tip!........well done on your float caught barbel.

Another struggle on the Witham. Blankety blank. Sum total of my angling prowess for the week....2 Jacks.

I wouldn't normally venture to a public fishery on a Saturday but my club lakes are all solid on top.:(

Jeez you two are a pair, the photo loses a lot of detail as I have to shrink it to get through Fm's file size limit, that's why my pics are often a bit blurry, if you do look carefully you can make out some line just above the float, and it wasn't that dark but my eyesight is ok, maybe I should say it took hours to land just to annoy crow and that's why it's sooooo dark :eek:mg: And in response to your other half's other thread it's not a tiny float, just a 4no4 maybe a 6no4 cant remember and the fish was probably around 6-7lb maybe more only cos it was a chubby one, hardly fish of the season, i knew you guys would have to say something you just couldnt resist.

To accuse someone of lying is crossing a line. Wasn't a big deal catching it, it's just a fish, I thought i'd do a nice catch report for the people who sent me nice messages asking me not to leave fm which was humbling. Thanks guys. Was just nice to get out on the bank, oh Merry Christmas by the way
