I don't take maggots to some venues, only because I will get "bitted out". Small roach and perch are like piranhas if fish maggot on these venues, It ends up being a case of using meat corn pellets/bread. On another venue it would be a kilo of worm and a pint of casters and corn/meat.

Afternoon everyone.

So today was the day I got out for the first time in years.. absolutely loved it! Went to meadow view in Lymm as this was the last place I fished 15 years ago.

Did about 4 hours out on the water and caught 15/20 little silver fish (Think they’re probably roach)

Shall be getting back out soon

Took my 10' light bomb rod with the half ounce tip attached down to the GUC near Harefield this evening.
Neil1970 told me of some big perch being caught down there. My intention was to hopefully start the ball rolling on the BIG perch challenge. I chucked a small plug around for a while and hooked a small perch, then after changing to a slightly bigger jointed plug I hooked a better one.
Roughly 12 to 14oz so not really BIG!

I was chuffed though as my recent attempts at lure fishing have ended in blanks and lost lures.
Sadly that jointed lure is now snagged at the bottom of the canal too:(

I started fishing lures in the sea this Summer, didn’t take me long to realise I was losing more lures in the rock pools than catching fish.

Putting a mono link between hook and lure now means when I pull for a break I get the lure back minus a hook. Obviously the mono link is of a much less breaking strain than the main line.

Poled up on my own on Sunday to Harlesthorpe Dam and thought I'd give my new carp rod a try out seeing as this place is lump central with some catching 10 doubles in a session.
Pitched out towards some lily pads and waited, and waited. Switched between worm and corn, then a corn/spam combo which seemingly did the trick because I landed a skimmer of all of 4 oz!
It did manage to trigger the bite alarm though so I was optimistic until reeled in!

Next one was a little bigger but still a skimmer and then finally the reel was shedding line with the bait runner and the alarm was singing.

Had a good scrap, rod bent sufficiently, got the big carp net out thinking "double figures at last" and landed a carp of all of 7lbs!

After that it died even worse so I packed in and went to Tesco!

Here's a picture of the spoofer double figure beasty:

You are improving clearly! Remember the fish caught are merely a part of the overall fishing experience! You have to accept and enjoy the fun of planning for the event, setting up, devising and implementing your plan( ultimately successful or otherwise), the great outdoors, the wildlife on show, making a den if the weather is poor( setting up your brolly/bivvy), boiling a kettle and making a latte, enjoying being under canvas( you either get it or you don't), keeping dry and finally seeing your float dip or tip quiver!!!

It's the whole five yards that's important ! The fish are the icing on the cake! Just think about what the whole thing does for your blood pressure and general well being! As I type I'm looking forward to tomorrow for all the reasons outlined above!

I MADE BACK TO THE BANK, BUT...

Yesterday, after a couple of weeks I managed to get out and try our local river. Sue and I had looked at a spot that looked good and an old guy we met on the bank, upstream a couple of miles, had confirmed it was a good place to fish.

I thought that it may not have been the best day to try, but after being stuck inside for the best part of a couple of weeks, I needed to get out. Although we did not catch anything, at least we got some fresh air and avoided getting blown over! You can read more on my blog, if you are interested. Just click on the photograph.

This morning was one of those days when I should've stayed in bed... Got to the river at 6:00, wellies on, kit out of the car, wandered about 50 metres and met a fellow who informed me that the barbel society had the stretch booked today. So it was back to the car, wellies off, kit back in the car, and off to find somewhere elsewhere.

Only having a couple of hours I decided on Uckinghall lake as it was close, despite my having never done well there.

Wellies on, kit carried to the lake side, all feeling good. Alas, within a few minutes - second cast - my reel failed on me - tightening up it simply went slack with the handle flopping loosely like the ankle of a fellow I saw coming down the cheese roll one year (when I got home and took the reel apart apart the inside looked like a bomb had gone off in there - the main gear had shattered as had several other parts. What's also annoying is that I spent the weekend putting new line on all three spools).

Luckily I had a float rod and reel with me so I could still fish.

Then it started to rain - I don't mind fishing in the rain, but I wasn't prepared because the forecast was for no rain until late morning. No brolly, no waterproofs.

Then I started to get tangles on my second rod that turned into a fishing version of Eric Sykes' The Plank. Eventually got going and managed a solitary roach.

Then it was time to come home.

Off to the local shop this afternoon for a new reel...

Complete blank yesterday in the high winds. Some very big carp were rolling over my baits enjoying the wind but they must have been laughing at me.
It chucked down with rain all day. Stuff is drying in the garage. It doesn't seem 5 minutes ago we were moaning about the drought.:eek:mg:

Float fished a big lump of squid in the river for a bass earlier in the week and a seal surfaced a couple of times 30 yards from my float; never seen that before so not much chance of a bass but caught 3 crabs. Tried a canal, nights have got cold and didn't expect much but got one small rudd. Today tried the fresh water bit of the river, a few small roach but got a bigger roach, maybe the biggest I have caught in this bit of river. Bread flake on a quill, 14 hook and two bb's on 5lb line, my default set up; the sweetcorn produced nothing, it was all bread..
Wildlife apart from the seal, kingfishers going up and down, a weasel, loads of swallows migrating, a buzzard and a kestrel together. Enjoyed the kestrel the most, rarely see them these days.

Had an interesting and ultimately enjoyable day today despite only catching 6 fish! I had 3 carp and a bream on the feeder and two perch on the float rod!

On arrival at the water 3 carpers arrived, Dad , son and son's girlfriend! They were all in camo gear, had identical bivvies and set up rod pods and three rods! Words of greeting were not exchanged as they ignored me completely! I cast in using a method feeder with liquidised bread mixed with Parmesan cheese and chia seed!!!! ( patent pending) and a 12mm Robin red pellet!

My first carp, a common of about 6 lb followed within 5 minutes! It was noticed!!! My second arrived about 30 minutes later and the bream followed within the hour! The sherwood green trio hadn't caught! I shouldn't gloat or even feel any gratification but rudeness I cannot tolerate! In fairness to them they suddenly became chatty and asked what bait I was using! Harmony was restored!

I learnt two things today! One was that Preston Method hooks are prone to be opened out easily and must be changed regularly! I will look for other hair rig hooks to 4" mono in size 12!

The second thing relates to my float line! I decided after all the discussion about Pro gold to give it a try ! I struggled to find it and could only obtain 6lb bs which is a little heavy for me on my stradic c14! For the third time I have had the line looping of the spool and leaving a loop on the spool when casting repeatedly ! I flick the bale arm over , pull of sufficient line to remove the loop and then reel in! This has happened quite a few times but on three occasions the line pulled off has morphed into a knot and I have had to restart . On one occasion when winding in the line has broken like cotton! It may be me and I will reserve judgement! Am I doing something wrong? So far I am unimpressed !

Also keep in mind Mike that your Pro Gold 6lb line is most probably nearer 8lb in real terms if all that I’ve read is correct.

It's 0.25 mm in diameter but I have never had line snap in those circumstances! It just snapped as though it was cotton! I feel foat fishing with light floats and baits and repeated casting , really tests any line and in many instances it performed impecably but those three instances does cause me concern! I will reserve judgement!!

Probably John ! However it may be me and I wish to remain objective! I have not had this problem with sensor or maxima!
