How did you get on?

I had one on the savage gear perch (perch pattern 17cm) and two on a live bait. All came from peg 1 - 4. I planned on lure fishing the whole time but its stupidly weedy and that gets arduous pretty rapidly.

Well after being stuck in traffic for ages(bloody roadworks)we got to the fishery,it fished really hard,my mate only had two skimmers,I didn't fare that much better, three skimmers,a roach/bream hybrid about a pound and a half,a tench about the same and a chub knocking three pounds, unbelievable really, the water is stuffed with fish, clear water, high pressure and bright sunshine seem to have put them right off.

The plan was to spend a few hours on the river fishing a feeder, something I rarely do, after reading a few reports I thought better of it, the river is still very swollen, not a place for the inexperienced angler.

Having witnessed a decent perch follow in a roach I was landing in a recent visit to the estate I decided to return and target the stripeys.

I set up with a float suspending a lobworm just off the deck, spraying maggots over the area, within minutes the float sailed away and I struck into....nothing, this continued to happen, small roach just tugging the end of the worm I guess. After a hour I was getting weary of this and decided to ditch the float and just pop up a worm with a swan shot a few inches from the hook.

My bobbin was extremely sophisticated.

CiQOWkI.jpg

Didn’t take long for my twig to rise steadily and this time I had a solid strike with a nice plump 8oz roach coming to the net.

Spirits lifted I continued spraying maggots a couple of rod lengths out and it wasn’t long before the twoggin was rising again, this time the familiar head banging tug that signalled the target fish had been found, not huge but very welcome.

kAxZVKB.jpg

This was to be a hectic thirty minutes with a slightly larger perch coming to the net closely followed by the sort of feeling that raises the heart rate a notch or two. A good fish which put up a determined fight, always a great feeling when you catch a first glimpse as they roll on the surface and an even better feeling when it’s in the net, this one needed the scales, 3lb 2ozs, a full pound heavier than any perch I’ve caught on the estate in the time I’ve been fishing it.

GLR7I1X.jpg

Ten minutes later a similar battle ensued but this time it was to end with a heavy sigh as the fish slipped the hook, it felt another decent fish.

All that within a thirty minute spell, after that nothing at all and with the sun getting low I was feeling a bit chilly and packed up.

I’ve read so much about the “golden hour” catching quality perch just before dusk, this is my fifth perch over three pound all caught in the middle of the day some in strong sunlight!

gF3VFKT.jpg

With no visitors on the estate and no mowing or strimming of the gardens going on it was very peaceful apart from Mr.Crow and co that circled above me noisily throughout my stay, giving me a thumbs up I hope.

With another dry day forecast for tomorrow I may just return and see if a four lurks in the depths.

Small river fishing again this morning after another blank piking at a different reservoir on Tuesday, the upper Soar near Narborough only about 10ft wide in most places.Cattle still out in the furthest field but the electric fences were switched off and the cattle were not interested in me at all.First thing was a bit of gardening to find out where the land finished and the water started, gently dropping a small stick float with flake,it had travelled about two feet when it darted under ,a chub of around 8oz the culprit, next trot - a dace, third trot - slightly bigger roach and the fourth trot resulted in a brown trout of about 10oz.When bites fizzled out ,time for the quiver nothing except something nicked a complete worm off a size eight, suspect a signal crayfish the culprit.Moved upstream and had another roach and a chub of 1lb 13oz in legered flake.Moving upstream again trotting through a bend resulted in another chub of 1lb 7oz and loads of missed bites. All landed fish were very lightly hooked, the clear, low water and bright sunshine probably the reason.Still with a buzzard and kestrel for company for most of the morning ,hard to believe five hours had gone by so quickly.

Another two lovely days fishing and a joy to be out. With the trees in full autumnal colour it was a pleasure to just sit and fish and let the world (and Brexit) pass me by, if only for a few hours. Amazing weather for the time of year, but it ain't gonna last!

Still waters are something of a lottery these days with swims clear of leaves at a premium, and even choosing a clear one on arrival doesn't guarantee it will remain so for the session. In fact, the situation can change in the time it takes to tackle up, and trying to take the wind/breeze into consideration helps little, as the leaf masses seem to have a mind of their own! In addition, only a very gentle breeze will bring them falling from the trees like confetti, hardly ideal for float fishing, and worse, for fishing on the drop!
Arriving early gives me some choice though, and as the southerly had been constant through the night I was pretty confident my chosen swim would be clear (or so I thought). What I found was a rogue mass some 6' in diameter sitting plumb in front of me, and the second choice wasn't much better, so I ended up trudging to the opposite of the lake and losing twenty minutes of good fishing time............

As it turned out the two morning sessions proved fruitful with some very nice, fighting fit roach coming to the net on both hemp or red maggot. It wasn't easy finding them and I had to feed three separate areas to stay in contact with fish. The best came from sitting well back with only 2' of rod top over the gin clear water and then underarm casting close to an overhanging mini tree no more than 3' from the bank. I could take one or to fish in this way, but then it was a case of swinging around almost 90 degrees to pick up more fish. Thirty minutes later I could change back again, having kept the loose feed going in, but this only 2/3 maggots at a time.

My best fish went 1lb 3ozs which, on being hooked so close in felt like double that weight. Just a solid mass on the other end with little movement until I bought the 11' Ultralight sideways and tried to steer the fish from the swim. Then it woke up and the constant thumping on the rod tip, which meant giving some line, had me more than a little concerned for the 20 hook and 1,5lb bottom! I don't recall the last time a fish fought so well and for so long......

As with all successful sessions, something eventually had to come a long to partially spoil the day. A dithering of the float (which could just as easily have been a very small perch!) had me lifting into a carp of some size which felt the need to steam off toward the trailing bush on my left (that I had avoided all morning) at such a speed that all me end gear vanished in a second or two, including a precious float of my own making. It could be said a float is a float and sh*t happens, but this is the third float loss this season and it is extremely difficult to replicate what are basically one off patterns. I loved that lovely slim float with its 20mm orange tip and spaced 1mm black rings which indicated bites so well........................Perfect for the job but gone forever. Drat!!

Today is a rest day with some work needed to get the gear back in shape for Fridays session. New 2lb line is required on the c'pin (an Allcocks Flick'em Perfection of early 60's vintage) and the tackle bag needs a clean, plus I need to walk a bit as well!

Total catch over the two sessions was 30/35 roach, most beyond swinging size.

ps The Ultralight rod is a dream to use for such fishing and I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Just to add to my day yesterday,I have a question for you all,on the fishery i went to,you could call it a commercial, but it is as natural as they come,a river runs in and out of it,surrounded by trees, bushes etc, well here goes, there were five other anglers on the lake(there must be at least 25 pegs),all of these fished the method on two rods, quiver tipping, now imo you can't fish this way efficiently with two rods,if the carp would have been feeding(which they were'nt)a disaster could happen every cast,as hooking two fish at the same time is very likely, several times, that is it the anglers were capable, these were not,so fish tangling would occur, the greedy fishery owner charges £2 more for two rods and most anglers want to cast these well apart, this casting into areas which invade others swims, again better anglers think of this before they choose where to fish,a very hard ,argument causing issue.

Annoying situation Alan but this thread isn't really the place to start a discussion of this nature.
Better if you started a new thread...
Thanks...

Belated greetings from SW France. Autumn weather has been holding up well with daytime temps reaching high teens-low twenties, and I still continue to fish an hour or two most evenings with Bream and Barbel being most obliging ,( I’m still trying to get the hang of fluff chucking and generally failing). The fish have taken on their autumn colours and look spectacular and as apparently the only bait angler around I think I’m catching some true wild previously uncaught fish, ( if they weren’t wild before I caught them they were certainly livid afterwards!).
Yesterday’s session stared off slow with only a couple of twitches to show, the dog on the lap and drinking tea method failed to produce a bite so as dusk drew in I resorted to the stand up and have a wee technique, 30 seconds of watering the lawn and Wallop! the tip goes round and after a brief tussle both with the fish and my flies( not the fluffchucking ones) we got this gorgeous 5 1/2lb barbel on the bank. A quick photo on the phone, as my camera was out of charge, followed by a “lets put him back straight away” and with a lump in my throat I thanked JW for all the pleasure and inspiration he’d given me for over forty years

Some very nice posts there and all imho relevant to this thread!

Cracking perch John ; well done! If you want any advice on the patent application let me know! How often is simple best!

To keep PC with PC I have started another thread on the theme mentioned by Whitty!

Sorry Simon, but on consideration before I posted, it was part of my day yesterday,so I thought it was better to be in conjunction with my previous post, that's why it is here,I should have done it yesterday...

After yesterday’s perch optimism was high with a return to the lake today. As has been the case nearly all season I had the lake to myself, infact I had the entire grounds to myself and decided to set up in the same spot as yesterday.

ak6Vl3t.jpg

I’d come better prepared today with a large quantity of lobworms and maggots and a proper bobbin, design courtesy of Binka.

enZwR9d.jpg

Again perch were the target and with yesterday’s bright sunshine being replaced by a very grey and murky sky I thought the chances were good of capturing some further stripeys.

It wasn’t to be, after four hours just a skimmer, a bream and nice plump roach. Maybe I’d pushed my luck going into the same swim just 24 hours later, should have ventured down to the other end of the lake, perhaps Saturday.

There
I had a day on a lake up in the Wolds today. The intention was to go maggoting for silvers/perch/skimmers with a waggler.

I did manage a few roach after about a 3 hour wait and they came out feeling like blocks of ice.

I decided to up the tackle and put a large lump of flake on while I sat back and enjoyed my sandwiches. After all if the roach were difficult, nothing was going to interrupt my lunch with bait like that in the cold......WRONG....

Five commons/mirrors/ghosties later I finished my food. Not too much indigestion :eek:mg:

I've been out a couple of times this week. Tuesday morning found me here

ll5.jpg

Was I in Siberia? No, that's Mansfield hospital in the distance, where you can get treated for exposure or have your head examined. I was sharing the bank with a local angler, and the cunning plan was to bag up on the fish that must surely be packed into the deepest area of a shallow 85 acre res. Between the two of us, we put in 15 rod hours on bomb and feeder and not a bite. The fish were to blame, as our reasoning was impeccable. If there's anyone out there who hasn't caught much lately, that should make you feel a bit better.

Today I was out on another large, but fishier, lake, and had the place to myself, apart from this chap with a centrepin and a bucket of worms.

ll1.jpg

Once again, I had plenty of space in front of me, but it was a much softer day, more like September than November.

ll3.jpg

I hadn't fished there before, so I decided to try different things, and fished worm and caster 8m out on the rod and pin, and a light waggler with maggot 4 rods out. We had bites all day, mostly roach and skimmers, but with some nice perch

ll2.jpg

Steve had some good perch and roach, and it was great to sit by a lake where there were always fish showing and no end of dramatic perch and pike strikes on the abundant small stuff.
I didn't end up with a big catch, but had a great day doing the kind of fishing I like in good company.

Had a quick go on my local stretch, trotting one of those loafer/chubber floats, 4g olivette, size 10 hook. Worms for bait. Had a couple of tiddlers, then the best fish came from the very last swim, but my line was weirdly twisted round an overhanging branch so the fight wasn't very satisfying. You can see the culprit twig in the top left:

Incidentally, i was using 6lb braid for what was admittedly 'short trotting' and found it perfect for mending the line. Together with the heavy float, the very light braid was a dream to flick off the surface, and much of the time i could keep the lot off the water. And this is just with my 8ft stream rod. Although i imagine this would be a pain if it was really windy and i don't think mono would have wrapped the overhanging twig in such an annoying way.

Did you use a mono leader? Also, has your rod a fairly soft action. I’ve toyed with the idea myself but without any stretch in the braid I thought a bit of cushioning elsewhere might be required.

I wonder if a giant perch would like one of these, lugworm or king ragworm even, a ft long, might be too much for skimmers, just a thought.!View attachment 5993View attachment 5994View attachment 5995
