Stuck on the chuffin M25 somewhere between Heathro
Another day and another blank.

Something different again...barbelling on a stretch I've never fished before not least because its a good 25 min walk from the nearest parking and I've simply not been well enough/ fit enough until quite recently. Big Dave had had a couple of good fish off this stretch recently and he basically bullied me into going.

Found the place quite easily which is no mean feat for me as I was not blessed with the GPS gene like Big Phil who can find anywhere, blindfold in the dark. Dropped on a swim that screamed barbel...a steady glide down to a fallen in tree.....and packed 2 hours into dark having not had so much as a knock. Happy days....its uphill going back I quickly discovered.

Oddly.....I enjoyed it again as it was different and a new water for me and it clearly has a load of potential. That is a seriously bloody long walk though !

When will I ever learn?!!! Went roach fishing on the Thames yesterday. I (wrongly) thought that I would be in with the chance of a roach or two - not cold, mainly overcast and the water temperature was a decent 46F - the water though was so clear, the bottom was clearly visible! Legered both bread and dead maggots - not a single bite. Tried two different swims and also tried trotting punched bread. There were 4 other anglers there and we all blanked apart from one chap who caught two bream late on in the day.

Just call me four blanks in a row now:eek:mg: Four sessions on the Bridgewater and not a nibble, heartened only by pole man fairing no better, it wasn't just me, not that I'd wish it on anyone.

Yesterday saw me succumbing to the lure of the dark side and I wanted to but a bend in my newly acquired 11' MatchPro Ultra Light:) Arrived at Dunham Fisheries around 10am to a rarther grisly overcast day but not cold. Started catching small Roach (some very small) from the off, and lots of them til about midday, one after the other and mostly on the drop. Once the bait settled on the bottom, nothing. Shallowed up but it didn't make any difference. Once it settled they didn't seem interested, fishing about 10' from the island in 52" of water. Couldn't get them interested in anything but maggots.

Usual setup, 3bb Glow Tip Antenna, 2lb hooklength and 20s light wire hook.

After midday it started to liven up with the odd Rudd, skimmers, a few Ide which are getting bigger, they were only put in last year, the biggest being about 11oz and one Mirror at 5lb, a nice size for the rod and a Gudgeon. 16 all told excluding the mornings tiddler haul. Came to various baits. I couldn't say any one was particularly better than another. Maggots, punch, flake, corn, loose feeding maggots and hemp.

After four blanks it was just what I needed, a really enjoyable day. Although I think someone's not telling me something. Every angler that came, maybe six of them fished on the far side of the island.

The new rod performed well handling the Carp with ease and felt like there was plenty to spare. It's a little stiffer in the tip than the 10'6" Greys which I'd still prefer for Crucians and smaller stuff but I felt a little more in control with the Carp using the MatchPro, although it is 6" longer. Just for reference the MatchPro weighs 145g and is 1.42mm at the tip, the Greys Toreon weighs 163g and is 1.5mm at the tip.

The Dorset Stour and Throop Fishery in particular is on top form at the moment. The last two weeks of the season could turn out to be very special.

I didn't fish on Thursday but met up with a mate travelling down to fish for two days. It was a pleasure and privilege to help James and see him advance his chub pb to 4lbs 12oz, then to 5lbs 07oz and then again spectacularly, with a Throop stunner of 6lbs 13oz. Excellent fishing and proper skills.

Friday was similar but with another mate down for his first trip to the Stour and his first time ever using a float on a river! This time I brought my gear!

An early 3lber settled the nerves for Jon and he followed that with a 4lber and then a nice chub of 5lbs.

Later on he too advanced his own chub pb with beauty of 6lbs 01oz. Again, great persistence and quality skills.

I eventually found a few chub in the adjacent swim with a couple of nice 5lbers. Late afternoon produced a few more including another Throop special at 6lbs 11oz and a nice little barbel.

All on double maggot on a #18/#20 under a 6gm Pellet Waggler or 6gm Chubber.

Wow Neil, just wow!

How do you follow that? Not easy, we do things smaller down here in Kent. Just time for a two hour session this morning on the Stour through Canterbury City centre, some nice posh swims to fish from.

Trotted a stick float using maggots on light gear and was instantly into the roach. Amazing, just a few miles downstream I had caught over a hundred roach a few days ago but the dozen I caught today were all a bit bigger.

Had a couple of dace and a nice chub, ok, half the weight of those above but very welcome anyway.

With the weather forecast telling me heavy rain at 2pm and with me only having a pint of old mixed maggots and casters I thought i'd get out for a quick hour or so. After a couple of trots through, I hooked a chub of around a pound and then I was getting one virtually every trot through with some better ones of around 2 1/2lb. After about a dozen fish I noticed I was having to trot right downstream until the float virtually disappeared round a sweeping bend before I was getting a bite. Anyhow, as I was winding back a chub of what felt about a pound or so it suddenly went solid and I realised what had caused the chub to drop so far back down stream.....esox had noticed the action and had gatecrashed the party!
As soon as I realised what was happening I struck out of the chub (at least I think it was a chub as I didn't see it lol) and my hook stuck into esox. The pike put up a great fight and all the time I was playing it I was expecting my line to ping off as it caught on the pikes teeth, but it didn't. I netted the pike and my hook had buried itself into the scissors of esox so my line wasn't grating across it's teeth. After catching the party pooper I called it a day as I had literally a handful of maggots left.....here's the party pooper lol......

With colour in the canal and a lovely spring morning it was disappointingly poor fishing today. Once again the bigger roach were either not feeding or weren’t there? My landing net remained dry.

I think I’ll give the canal a miss for a while and make the most of the last 12 days of the season on the Colne...

I'm jealous ! A pike and you were not even trying!

I often get hasstled by pike, but mainly in summer. I've caught lots of them in the same fashion whilst trotting over the years.
I once caught a small livebait for perch, I lowerd it into the river and watched a perch take it, so I hooked the perch and whilst playing the perch a bloody pike shot out and took the perch! I struck out of the perch and caught the pike, I weighed that pike at the time and it was 11lb 6 ounces. I didn't weigh the pike today but i'd say it was between 14 or 15lb, it was a nice thick fish, it had a fair old set of nashers on it!

You must be a brave man, using a Daiwa Airity on a canal. lots of dog walkers and people with pushchairs on the towpath near me, not many joggers or cyclists.
