Last day on the river today so I went down the Colne in town.
Got there about 2pm, started on this long trot swim with flake on a chubber float.

No bites after an hour and a half so I spent some time talking to a mate who was fishing close by.
In recent weeks he’s had a string of 6lb+ chub on ledgered boilies from the river. Biggest 6:9..

Enthused, I walked downstream and on the way another angler had just landed a big chub caught on ledgered bread punch. I watched as he weighed it at 6:11. A proper lump!
I settled on another long trot swim and mashed some bread in a tub, one lump down the middle and another further across. Let that settle for a while before my first trot through.

First trot down the middle and the float dithered before shooting under, my lift was met with solid resistance and a bit of a fight ensued.
I imagined it was a medium sized chub as it tested my clutch in the flow, then it surfaced and it’s bronze flanks gave the game away..

One more move downstream but no more bites so I called it a day. The big chub I’d hoped for didn’t materialise but it was fun and I didn’t blank...

Big Dave tried to bully me into one last go at the Wey barbel today but with 2 foot on, more rain this morning and his mid morning txt to say it was " charging through" I was having none of it. Its too bloody far to walk only to find the river is unfishable or there is romeone sat on what passes for a slack.

I left him to it and barrelled off to Bury Hill for a last hurrah at the zander.

It was blowing an absolute gale when I got there but this gave me the run of the downwind bank. Started well with a stuttery run 1st chuck which I converted into a zander of about 4lb. Not big but a pretty fish and another blank averted. An early fish can often mean it fishes well at dusk but as the light faded the wind dropped, the sky cleared and out came a very bright moon the absolutec Kiss of Death down there. No action at sunset but about 6-40;another jittery run on the rh rod but when I tightened there was nothing there. Very odd....definately not a liner, I think maybe it just didn't have the hook in its gob.

And that was it until 8 pm when the 10 to 8 mugfish turned up late and snaffled half a joey mackerel. Slightly bigger than the 1st fish but still nothing to get too excited about. BUT I had a brace and I'd have taken that when I left home.

Fair play to Hagar down on the Wey...he toughed it out and had 2 barbel..6-8 and 8-9. He is made of stronger stuff than me but it is his home river so I guess that counts for quite a bit.

Anyway....that's both barbelling and zandering over for a bit. Need to get me crucian head on now...oh and trite too.

Once again I dared to follow in the footsteps of PC and so, despite the rain and gale force winds, I stepped out of the door and headed to a nearby water!

It stopped raining as I set up but I erected the brolly to be on the safe side! By 2.30 pm I hadn't had a sniff and feeling dejected I decided to pack up and head for home! My mobile rang and then rang off- a missed call! I called the number back and had the pleasure to chat to Nottskev. He had made what he called a bum call( I don't think he was referring to me) ie an accidental one and so we chatted for about 10 minutes. His parting comment was to persevere because a bite could occur at any time. I didn't have time to put my phone back in my pocket before the buzzer started to sing and a fish was on. A mirror of about 6lb was soon in the net! I was using a light Avon rod and the buzzer was necessary because the wind was so strong the tip was all over the place. That was it but the blank was saved. So now you have it , when a blank looms large give Kev a call.

After a slow start in bright sun it clouded over and I started getting bites. I had quite a few dace on maggot and they were indeed bigger than I expected.

Mike, when it's blowing like today a tip for you is to set your rod up so the tip is submerged, stop it from bouncing about.

With the river season over it was back to the local reservoir after pike.Very mild and after lugging the gear up the west bank to gain a bit of shelter from the gusty wind it was time to shed a couple of layers whilst setting up.Two deadbaits close in at the bottom of the marginal shelf,a third blasted high so the wind could get a bit more distance for me.Pegged the brolly down as a windbreak and settled back with a coffee to watch and wait.No fish of any sort rolling, the only fish I caught a glimpse of were disappearing down a cormorants throat.Recast moving the baits around, time for bird watching - reed buntings, bullfinches, robins and wrens in the overgrown blackthorn hedge,a red kite soaring over the fields on the far bank, ten great crested grebes and four goosander.About 10am the wind really strengthened, had to take the brolly down before the wind trashed it and white top waves crashing into the far bank I packed up around 11.30 clocking yet another blank.

You’ll get plenty of likes if landing a 4lb roach.:)

Today I fished the second fixture at a fishery in Royal Berkshire.
I won the first one with 56lb of F1’s so I used the same rig etc as last time.

B93200-D7-F526-4-C5-A-A768-B0156-FE5-BDF9.jpg

The wind, although not as strong as last week, was slightly problematic at times but bearable.
Double maggot over Sonubaits F1 dark sweet fish meal and micros on a 16 Drennan red maggot hook @ 11m in open water, I started off well with a skimmer then a steady run of F1’s.
I had an island which was out of pole range so I cattied out maggots regularly for an hour whilst I pole fished. After potting in more groundbait on the pole line I let it settle and chucked a waggler at the island. Picked off more F1’s and some roach before going back to the pole line.
During the 6hours there were a few squally showers and at one point in the afternoon, a heavy hail and sleet shower...
Had 23lb1oz at the scales which won my section of 6 and got me an envelope..

Top 3 all had 38lb with the ounces separating them.

22 fished.

Sunday, I met up with Binka at a huge gravel pit, hoping to find some of the large perch that congregate around this time of year. If anyone remembers Dr John, we were in the right place (but it was at the wrong time). We laid out a banquet of chopped worm and caster, but to no avail. It's a good job we find plenty of stuff to talk about; you have to do something when you're spending 7 hours without a bite. It was interesting to see how Steve goes about catching these perch, and I'm up for another try later on.

I'd just set off down the track to the fishery yesterday when a horrible knocking/creaking noise broke out around the ns rear wheel, over any large bumps. So this morning I poked around at it - then booked it into a local garage. It's a smooth road all the way to the marina, so I headed off there for the afternoon. With even more water on, the banks I usually fish were well submerged, so I squeezed in between some bushes, dug out the old platform that lives in the boot, and ended up quite comfortable

I set up the usual slider, and fed the usual 3 balls of groundbait that normally pulls some fish in. The roach didn't seem to be around, and I only caught a couple of perch in the first couple of hours..

And when, eventually, roach did turn up, they were in a skittish mood and didn't stay in one place long. I tried worm for the perch, and tares for the roach, but neither worked, and maggot proved the best bait today. I caught odd fish at all depths from 6' to 12', with occasional fish taken by pike, which might explain something

Funny how you can look at something for hours and not know...... I'll check next time I'm there, if you'd like to know.

Not something I’d expect to wake up to on fishing magic! I’m also a big fan.
