Stuck on the chuffin M25 somewhere between Heathro
Double bubble for me this week. Out carping with Big Dave on Thursday and first trite trip of the season with the Big Feller today.

The lake was busy yesterday so me and BD opted to fish the road bank which gives a totally different perspective & view of the lake. I liked it despite the traffic wizzing past behind me and BD having to stop for a chat with everyone he met. I dont think there is anyone in Surrey that he does not know or that he didnt go to school with. Eventually I dragged him away and we got set up in adjacent swims.

Not a touch for either of us until 40 mins into dark when BD is away on the LH rod. A taster at about 11-12 pound. I leave him to it and damn me by the time I've walked back and sat down he's away on the. RH rod. I let him land that one himself ( about the same size) and refreshed my baits. 10 mins later I'm away and this is clearly a better fish. BD thought it was a scraper 20 but I thought it was a bit short and so it proved at 19-8.... but a very pretty fully scaled common. More than happy with that.

I packed at 2030 as i needed to get home and sort me trite gear out just as BD picked up his 3rd fish....a very handsome fully scaled mirror of about 15lb.....all 4 fish falling to his latest "secret" bait which smells like a sort of fruity bubblegum. The carp seem to like it though.

Up Farmoor with the BF today and bloody hell was it cold ! Buzzers pouring off but the trite proved very elusive. Phil did better than me with 4 landed and 2 lost wheras I had just 2 fish from 3 takes. The flies were fishing round beautifully but for some reason I just could not buy a pull. Phil, I think, was fishing heavier flies and maybe getting down that bit deeper and fishing that bit slower. Who knows ? Next time it could be me bagging up and him struggling.

Packed at 3 to avoid the Oxford rush hour and because Phil's knee was sore by then. I was chilled to the bone having been stood in a persistent chill wind all day. Got home still cold, sore and a bif stiff. It needs to warm up a bit before those trite truly switch on to the buzzers but these are overwintered fish not stockies and absolute bars of silver. Every one fought like a maniac.

Nobody likes losing a fish cake Alan...

Luton AC control some very good canal venues, we used to fish them on interclub matches, unfortunately they don't have any matches any more...

Came obviously corrects to cake on my tablet, lol,I fished what I remember to be a good bream area, might have moved a couple of pegs along.

Yesterday I fished a farm pond for roach. I had never fished there before so didn't know what to expect. I used two rods: a float rod and the other a soft feeder rod. It was mayhem, twice I had two fish on at the same time and if I was sensible I should have used just one rod. I ended up with 3 carp, about 6 fantail carp, about 6 crucians, 1 perch about two pounds, 1 tench about three pounds, a small golden tench and about 100 roach biggest just over the pound. I was totally knackered! I can't go there again; wasn't able to fall asleep or eat all my sarnies!

Bit of a catchup, I've been busy knocking up a few more blanks...

Decided Tuesday to give the Bridgewater another go but just for a couple of hours. If nothing was happening, move on to Cicely Mill pool as I couldn't fish my nearby club pool as it was full of water, whatever next. Well nothing did happen on either. Nobody else fishing on either should have told me something.

Thursday, same strategy except for the late session being on my local club pool. Nothing on the Bridgewater again. I'll pull something out of there one of these days although most likely a shopping trolley knowing my luck at the moment. The club pool was a different story. Catching from the off and a great mix. Some decent sized Roach, a Bream of around 2lb+, a tiny Perch and seven or eigth Crucians. Probably thirty fish or so saved a blank week. Happy days:)

It's good thanks Mike. I still prefer the Greys softer tip action for silvers. Can't explain it too well, when I'm playing a fish with the Greys 10'6" Toreon I'm not worrying whether the 2lb hook length is going to hold up but it does get a heck of a bend in it when there's something bigger on. The Ultra Light was bought specifically for short portable sessions, it won't fit in my rod holdall which was the main reason for buying the 10'6" Toreon, it does fit and just happened to be a good choice for me. You'll have to give it a try some time.

The sun was out but the NW wind was decidedly chilly today on my Saturday morning venue. The authorities had been down and chopped out a lot of the far bank willows which served as valuable cover for fish. They’d also left a lot of the cuttings floating up and down which was annoying.
The fishing wasn’t great either. Small roach and skimmers were all I could get on punch, maggots were definitely not on the menu.
On the plus side, the weeping willows were coming into leaf, which along with some cherry blossom was heartwarming at least.

And now for something a completely different!

A fun afternoon session with my old colleague and fishing mate Mark Wintle. Both of us sat on old plastic seat boxes and fishing short on the pole with the top 3 or 4.

Mark.jpg

Roach, Rudd (including small Yellow Fin variety), Perch, skimmers and hybrids provided the interest. And a new PB for me!

The specimen Pumpkinseed didn't put up much of a fight but are stunning little blighters

A good 3 or 4 hours with lots of chat, reminiscing and current ailment comparisons.

Soon warmed up yesterday morning hauling the gear into the 'jungle' swim again after pike.Had to clear loads of floating branches and twigs out of the margins and luckily did not need waders to get enough room behind me to cast. Two legers and one float rig, something pinched the sprat on the single hook rig under the float after about 20 minutes. Then the middle rod was away and a hard fighting pike was netted and weighed - just over thirteen pounds with a yellow spot dead centre under its chin - the same one caught on Tuesday from 200 yards away on the opposite bank.Recast and enjoyed just being there, something had a go at the bait on the middle rod but let go without marking the sardine.Had a robin and wren for company with buzzards, woodpeckers and kites overhead.

Met up with Gordon( wetthrough) for a days fishing ! It was set fair at 8.00am with blue sky, sunshine and little wind. What could go wrong? Nothing actually we both had a great day with over 30 fish apiece albeit small.

We had a good selection of roach, Rudd , skimmers and a few ide! Gordon managed a crucian at the end! Once the sun went down and that lazy wind picked up it was cold. Thanks Gordon for your company .

Back in the jungle swim this morning just after 6am - cold northerly blowing down the reservoir, brolly up as a windbreak, three rods out as on Saturday.Had a look round ,I am the only nutter there,it was as cold as January/February.Interest shown on the middle rod and managed to land a pike of 8lb and still had the bait for the recast.A little later had a take on the left hand rod, another pike of 11lb 12oz fighting fit as the first.Something then pinched the tail end of the sardine off the middle rod so rebaited the two leger rods with herring and managed a third pike of 10lb 12oz.Eventually the temperature lifted about 10am but the wind did not give up.Watched buzzards trying to find thermals whilst avoiding the attentions of the crows.

A bright day with a cold wind is never my favourite, so I had breakfast and an early lunch and left it til afternoon. There was still a chilly north-easterly when I got to the Old Lake, so I sat with it over my shoulder and decided to fish waggler to save wrestling with a pole. Fortunately, the wind eased and it warmed up, and it all turned quite pleasant

I thought I'd best fish for roach as the tench and crucians haven't shown yet, so I fed hemp and caster and tried maggot, caster and tares on the hook. Only maggot got bites and a few roach appeared

although they also disappeared from time to time. A little tench was a pleasant surprise

More roach followed, and then it all went quiet. Soon after, the first of four carp was heading for the opposite bank. Luck was on my side today, and despite being handicapped by one of those useless spliced-tip rods, they all ended up in the net.

At this point I thought the net was probably getting congested, and put the fish back - the roach seemed to have scarpered. But it was only 5pm, so I had a couple more casts and my last two bites were a bream

and a tench

I felt like I'd had quite an eventful afternoon's fishing, if not quite what I'd been expecting.
