Managed to grab a few precious hours on the estate between collecting domestic brownie points.

Very much like the last visit with a biteless first hour then a hooked tench putting up a spirited fight before impersonating Usain Bolt and pinging my hooklength. A few small roach, skimmers and hybrid followed, it was a last cast save when another tench succumbed to the tail of a lobworm and this one fought well too but ended in my landing net.

The heaviest of the day was a lengthy rain shower, brolly up for the first time this season.

Everyone is catching tench except me..The town pit is on fire at the moment, a mate of mine had 7 out yesterday and at least one today. Skippy had a few there last week. I sat there from 1:30 to 7:30 today and had none...

I did however enjoy myself in the sun and showers and saw some thing I’d never seen before.
A great crested grebe came up in front of me with a huge crayfish in its beak and proceeded to swallow it whole...good lad...

I was fishing maggot feeder with double maggot and casting out a good 50yds. One one retrieve I was skimming the feeder across the surface and decided to let it sink halfway in to see if it was any deeper. As it hit the bottom I lifted the rod and it felt like it was snagged. Then I felt it moving, fish on! It kited to my left and came off.
My hook had been bitten off so I imagine a pike had snaffled my maggots on the drop..It didn’t feel big enough to break 0:17 hooklink?

I was given leave to go fishing as long as I was back by 1.00pm( no idea why as we are eating in) so I set off at 5.30am and was all set up on my new venue by6.00!

The misty view is on the larger and newer of the two waters whereas the other view is of my peg on the old lake! It was warm and sunny and I was all alone! The lake has a good head of large and healthy Chub and I caught 4 all on maggot with the largest 4lb 4 oz and 3 more at just under 4lb! They go to over 6 alledgedly.

I had around 20 roach with several around the 1lb mark and several Rudd and small perch! There are perch to 4lb again alledgedly . I caught just the one carp and 36 fish in total.

It was a fantastic few hours in a beautiful spot and great fishing! I will be going back very soon! I float fished with the Titan.

Did you mean Chub John? They have been in this venue for 15 years and certainly grow. They cruise around like carp sometimes taking from the top or on the drop!

No I was referring to the nice roach you caught, chub in a lake doesn’t seem right to me.

chub in a lake doesn’t seem right to me.

Chub can pop up in lakes on their own accord, usually if they are fed by a nearby river. If there's a gravel bottom they'll do ok. One of the ponds I fish has the odd chub, gudgeon and supersized ruffe although the latter is rare, the irony is everyone goes for carp and these other fish are out there to good sizes, it's fed by the local river. Another water has Barbel which prefer the backwater pond to the main river and can be caught alongside tench and rudd, the flipside is the odd tench and rudd prefer the main river. If they get their naturally and thrive then it's all good

Didn't recent chub records come from a lake next to the Thames where it had flooded & been left for a few years?

First club fixture of the new season yesterday on the GUC @Marsworth. Drew what I considered to be a good peg but it turned out to be very disappointing. There was one very short spell when the roach fed and I had a few on punch, otherwise it was pants.

Wow the HYDGO thread is now live in play

Betfishy is now taking odds on Simon to break his Tinca duck.

It's bright and sunny and there could be a waterskiers and speedboats going though his swim by now, the smart money is going on another bream :D

I was tempted to join the live broadcast from down here in Kent but unless I had reported it with the enthusiasm of a Chris Kamara style of report I would have lost the audience abruptly.

Like Simon I waited and waited for the tench to arrive.

But unlike Simon’s day they didn’t arrive. In three hours I had just two bites, both eels, something I’ve not caught in this lake before and not something I wish to repeat again. I reckon the tench have gone into Summer mode requiring trips at dawn and dusk only.

I wanted to end this report on a colourful note, here’s a photo of a tree resplendent against an azure blue sky.
