Tuesday: Fished the Dam again but in the shallows for a change. Shallows being relative, it's about 5' one and a half rods out. A cold start and I wasn't really layered up enough but it was due to warm up so just had to put up with it for a while. Put some GB in and started around 6:30am picking up small Roach and a nice Bream of about 3lb+ at around 8am. The Roach stayed small all day the biggest probably just a shade over 4oz but enough of them to keep me occupied. I thought the ducks looked cuter than the Bream so took a pic of them instead.

It slowed down around midday til around 1:30 when Mr Pike put in an appearance hanging around the peg waiting for me to throw fish back in. It was there for the rest of the day. A lady fishing two pegs up from me had one in her swim. How they managed to have a Pike match earlier on in the year with not a single angler catching is beyond me. You can't fish for Roach without one putting in an appearance at some time or other.

I just had a gut feeling that if the Carp were going to put in an appearance they'd show around 2:30/3pm so reached for a pouchful of corn, turned back round and couldn't see the float. You know, those moments where your not sure if it's gone under or you've just lost sight. Then the rod tip starts going round. I strike into it, the drag starts singing and it slips the hook. Sigh, such is life.

Picked a skimmer up of around a pound and a half later on and a Roach Bream hybrid of around 2lb which put up a good show of itself. Handsome looking fish. Big shiny scales and no slime:)

Friday: Being a sucker for punishment decided to give the Bridgewater another go. After I think four blanks I wasn't building my hopes up but I'd baited up Thursday morning to give me a fighting chance. Fishing the far shelf which is quite wide in this spot, around 6:7M and 40" deep 2M from the bank, about as close as I can safely get with a 3bb waggler. Picking up some quite nice Roach with only the odd tiddler, I'd had maybe six or seven around the 10oz mark by the end of the day. A nice Bream guessed at just short of 5lb early on:

I'd fish for a while on the shelf then it would go quiet and start fishing down the centre track at 73" deep. Then it would go quiet down the centre. It went like that for most of the day, switching between one and the other.

Three small Perch, the biggest probably just over 4oz. The last Perch out had a bigger one snapping at its tail as I wound it in. 51 fish in total and a really enjoyable and unexpected day especially as the forecast downpour never really happened.

Fished the open match at Albans lakes (formerly Willows) near London Colney today, after the overnight frost I imagined it would be hard. On arrival at the match lake I walked to my peg, it was gin clear in the margins..
Set up 2 tip rods, my Abu Suveran 12’ with method feeder and my 12’:6” Preston sentient with a cage feeder.

At the off I clipped up at about 50yds out and put 10 feeder fulls of groundbait, dead maggots and chopped worm. Attached a 3’ hook link to a 18 with small worm and a maggot. No bites for 3 and a half hours!
Couldn’t get my method feeder far enough across to hit the gravel bar on the opposite side so changed to a 1oz bomb with treble maggot at 70yds which did get there, but to no a avail.

Others were catching a few bream so I concentrated on my cage feeder mark. Eventually the tip moved and a good fish was on. Surprisingly it turned out to be a ghost carp around 5lb.
Next bite followed soon after and this was a lump, it took a while to subdue on my very forgiving sentient rod and 3lb bottom...
Another ghost carp but around 12lb!
Went on to catch 3 bream before the end.
My two carp weighed 17lb 10oz and the 3 bream 10lb which was not enough to frame..

I'm all ears Ian! I'd love a trip to Dhaka to see Lakhyaman and catch some superb fish and have some cracking curries! We could stop off in Dubai for a few days on the way and see the sights!

I think we should all go, it'll be fun.

Ah, I maybe need a few thousand more brownie points.

With skippy's tench in mind I went down to the town pit where he caught them last week. Having spent all day yesterday watching a tip and not wanting to use alarms I fished waggler and maggot as I usually do here.
I balled it with gb and a few dead maggots and fished double red. Not a touch after 2 hours so I decided to move.
Settled into another swim and sat watching a motionless float once more. I was wondering which swim skippy had been in when a voice behind me asked " any good?". He must have read my mind as it was none other than skippy's mate the big fella!
I asked him and of all the swims on this big water it was the one I started on!
I didn't stay much longer as the wind got up and I was damn cold....Blank..

The tench are hard work here as well. Since the river close I've had five sessions at a local 16 acre pit that, although not holding a large stock, usually produces a reasonable number of fish once you know where they 'hang out'. These five sessions have produced just two fish - at least the woodland ponds are giving up some crucians and thankfully the water will be warming up soon.

With the back lawn mown, a trip to the tip ( no charges for plaster board, rubble or wood and free compost to boot!) and a wall plastered its time to kick back with a glass of red and contemplate, maybe have a crack for a brine trite on a dray flay after dinner, though I’ll probably end up chucking a feeder out for a barbel.

Today was my first day on the bank for over a month and I decided to try a pleasant but difficult water which offered the chance of a tench! On arrival at 7.30 It started to rain and didn't stop until 12.30. I could have sworn it was the 6th of February rather than May as it was so cold! I set up the tempest brolly and glad I did!

I caught 2 carp, 3 bream , a nice roach bream hybrid and two of my favourites. An enjoyable day with a good chat to a mate who I hadn't seen for a while! It was cold though and I stayed put in the tempest shielded from the wind and rain!

I’ll have you know we had a heatwave in February! Well done on the tinca, like unicorns at the moment.

Welcome home.

April proved to be a disappointing month compared to my first two seasons on the estate. Eight trips yielded nothing better than skimmers and small roach, the occasional bream was the highlight! So bad I resorted to fishing for the carp which brought instant success.

The lake was closed for the weekend due to an event taking place in the grounds so today’s trip was the first outing in nearly a week, needed to get a session in as the weather forecast is grim for tomorrow.

Today I sensed a change, the first hour passed by without a bite but then the sort of bite I’ve long waited for, a lift of the float followed by a steady glide away, the Matchpro Ultralight went solid when at last I had a tench on which put up a spirited fight before coming to the net. The following two hours brought a further two tench, a couple of decent size bream and a roach, that’s more like it.

All caught floatfishing a lobworm using 3lb line, size 18 hook to. 2lb hooklength.

A sense that Summer is on its way, even the Jurassic looking vegetation in the grounds is suddenly growing rapidly.

Just need to find the golden tench now.
