Back on same peg as Tuesday, on my own today, mick had some hospital things to sort out, did want to fish another peg, but someone had beat me to it, even though I was there for five am.

Slow start, fish were coming into swim, but not taking the bait, just the two mm pellets I’d fed, tried different pellets and wafters but no bites, switched to bomb and pellet and did get a couple of carp, but not easy like it was a few weeks ago.

This common was perfect, really good mouth which is a change,
Now I was thinking what to try different, and noticed a small tin of chick peas, I’d had in my bait bag for ages, and they went on the bait screws I use as well, so tried one with a few free offerings, success had a take within minutes, went on to take four more on them.
On my own again on Tuesday, so I think I’ll try a different peg, for a change.

Back to the Bridgwater again a mile or two east of Lymm. Same spot with the offending tree but set up the 10'6" Toreon which I should have done last time. The spot with the offending overhanging tree, minus the float I left in it!

BWSL_20190905_155950_sml.jpg

Arrived about 7am a little gb on the far shelf and bottom of the near drop off then set up. Started off well with some nice Roach around the 8oz mark on maggot, they wouldn't look at anything else. Tried bread which just got small stuff, casters, little interest, sweetcorn, no interest whatsoever (forgot to take meat). Fished well up to 11 with a feisty Bream (honest) then it just died (the fishing not the Bream). The tree didn't present any problem with the shorter rod.

BWSL_Bream_20190905_085051_sml.jpg

I'd had around 20 up til that point with a couple of Perch. By this time the wind was starting to get up and I had to switch to a straight waggler. The Glow Tip Antenna was just getting pulled under. The straight waggler needed 3 No8s near the hook to get it to hold bottom. The one and only fish I got on corn about a foot off bottom in the afternoon and before I'd put the No8s on. Lovely fish.

Not a bad day at all and just a hint of drizzle for about 10 minutes later on. And only one hook!, although I did have a go at clearing some of the vegitation on the far side:eek:mg: 26 altogether.

After a succession of blanks searching for elusive bass it was good to get back on the river to catch a few fish, was a much needed pick me up.

Bait sorted for the day, hemp, tares, maggots and two week old casters still looking good.

Bites were more difficult to come by compared to the last trip just two weeks ago, the transition from Summer to Autumn seems to have happened overnight and the fish haven’t been informed yet.

Still managed to put a decent net full together though with those old casters proving to be the popular bait with a nice variety of fish including roach, perch, Skimmers, chublets, horrible eels and even a few decent sized bream which I don’t mind catching from a river.

A bit on the nippy side first thing, the shorts and crocs of just a week or so ago on the beach replaced by hoodie and a good stout pair of trousers, all in all a good day with the summer canoeists now absent as the days shorten:(

Tucked behind a willow hedge in a gale on the Wolds today. The carp went mental. I had some good roach, rudd and a bit embarrassed to say 32 carp about 5 or 6 lb. Bread/paste/pellet.
Also this interloper from the inlet stream. The grass was wet!

Fishing can be exhilarating, exciting, infuriating, frustrating, boring and like today just plain satisfying unlike the cricket. I digress. Torn between two venues I went to my local favourite in cloudy and damp conditions.

View attachment 7506

I started with the feeder which was slow producing just a crucian, a common, an F1 and a bream. I switched to the float with maggot and had a lovely roach immediately.

View attachment 7507

I had several similar ones around the 12oz mark. I also had this one which I thought was a Rudd in the flesh but which looks like a roach now.

View attachment 7508

No doubt I shall be advised accordingly. I switched to the feeder and had 14 beam to 2lb on the pellet feeder and with the same chocolate orange wafter. At this rate a jar will last forever. I had 49 altogether including small perch, gudgeon and Rudd.

It remained cloudy till I packed up around 3.00 when the sun finally made its appearance. A day like today makes one want to go again which is how it should be.

Out early this morning at the local reservoir, two method feeder rods set up,sit back with a coffee to watch and listen.A sudden screaming run on the esterberry boilie had a strong fish go straight into weed, managing to free it ,I soon had a tench in the net - a male, smallest I have had from this water 2lb 13oz but perfect condition.Just released it when the other rod went - a bream of about 3lb.Recast both rods, had a fish fall off in the weed then had another screaming run on the plastic corn which was a female tench of 4lb 8oz and a bit later another bream of around 4lb on te same plastic corn.Spent the time between bites watching kingfishers, buzzards and the biggest surprise was a pair of peregrine falcons fly across the reservoir right above me calling to each other.Identity confirmed by a mate fishing the far bank,he had also heard them calling - pity they don't have cormorants as a diet.

Had a day on my local town pit today. A chilly start followed by a warm, sunny afternoon.

As you can see the ski boat was out which annoys some but I’m sure it helps oxygenate the water.
Fished a 10ft tip rod and method feeder with gb and treble maggot on a QM1 size 14. Chucking out about 50yd to clear a gravel bar topped with weed and find gravel. Had 4 bream and 2 tench.

Biggest tench was not weighed but probably about 8lb....

Clip on shades folded up, not big eyebrows....

Biggest bream was weighed at 9:4:0..

At a quick glance I thought that was an extremely wide canal for one moment PC. Two fine specimens you caught too!

No fishing, as such, due to the only match that takes place on my usual river haunts taking place today. As I usually see no one when on the river, I took the opportunity to see how some of the older virtuosos got on a what techniques they might use in swims I'm very familiar with. It was also a chance to see how my own results might compare.

Sadly, despite expectations of a good turn out, only eleven showed. That included one of the old boys I know quite well that only last week swore blind he wasn't going to fish.

I chose to walk the stretch I fish most regularly. Despite it being a good mile+ of river, it had just three anglers on it. One was in my favourite peg, the one that is usually the spot that features in my HDYGO posts. Another was in a peg that I fish regularly, but moreso in winter. The third was in a peg that I rarely fish. It always looks nice (even nicer now the last flood has reshaped the gravels) but rarely produces for me. All three blokes are good river anglers of some repute on the local circuit.

The guy in the nice looking peg had a single bite in the last ten minutes of the match. A grayling that managed to slip the hook as he tried to net it. Other than that, not even a busted maggot or a minnow to show for five hours of fishing.

The fella on my favourite peg was having just as much trouble with minnows as I do. However, rather than trotting it as I would, he was using a waggler down the far bank willows. He ended up with a smattering of dace and chublets with a bonus grayling (and a trout that didn't count) for 2lb 9oz.

The last chap alternated between feeder and waggler for a similar net of dace, chublets and grayling for 2lb 7oz.

These two weights were enough for second and third in the match. As I would have expected, someone would get lucky with a decent chub or two amongst the usual dace, chublets and grayling. The winner did exactly that with two proper chub for the only double figure net. With minnows and trout not counting, a few of the field DNW.

I drew a few conclusions. 1) the river is not in a good state at the moment. Hopefully the EA will take some notice this time. This is the third year in a row that the results of this match have been poor. 2) With my penchant for long rods, centrepins and bolo floats, I do things quite differently to the hardcore river match lads. They'll reach for the waggler rod more readily that I will, I may have to give it a go. 3) bar the odd decent chub, which I can't be bothered to chase, I'm probably doing as well as most would. 4) this is probably the one match a year I should be entering, though I'd be praying to avoid a lot of swims I just don't rate. God help me on a swim that needs the lead!

Chris,if what has happened on the River Ivel in Bedfordshire is anything to go by the EA will do nothing, this longish stretch was match fished once every two weeks for many years, with matches being won with as little as double figures,up to forty pounds or so of chub, with lots of pegs being capable of framing, last year they had two matches with only minnows caught, there has been newspaper coverage of the decline, where the EA were asked about it and made no comment, calamitous imv...

So, I went back to the river day ticket yesterday. Armed with a big tin of hemp, some left over sweet corn steeped in strawberry jam, luncheon meat, some heavier gear and hooks and some 6lb line that changes colour in the water as recommended by the tackle shop bloke. Big fish were on my mind.
Two things were against me, the cold night putting the fish down and eels; they love me and luncheon meat. I deliberately left the bread at home, did not want to be tempted to stray back to old habits.
I did not have a sniff, not a tremor, float ledgering and a few variations thereof. And near the end just as I was thinking I have not caught an eel at least, I bloody well hooked one and that is absolutely true. Hruuuumph or words to that effect. Nice swim though, boats and lillies, should have held a big roach.
And to add insult to injury, according to my county sea catch report, the sea has been fishing it's *******s off, bass, mackeral, dover soles, spurdogs everywhere, so I concentrate on blanking coarse fishing all month, hruuumph or words to that effect.

You could replace the River Ivel with the name of any small river in the country and get the same answer they will do sweet fa. With most anglers now fishing commercials and still waters the decline in most small rivers in my opinion is terminal. Any changes that may happen won't happen in my life time.

South Yorkshire.
A change from pellet to caster for silvers brought a change of luck. Fishing a lighter more cultured way, a total contrast to feeder and pellet.
I had a good number of roach and skimmers plus a Tench, nothing of any size, even the Tench was the smallest I've caught in a long time.
I should fish this way more often, far more enjoyable than the usual carp.

PC. Thats a very good fishery to have as a local!
Chriss I had a walk along the Ivel with the grandchildren. I was disappointed to see how silty and sterile looking it was. Lack of flow I guess. I know its riddled with crays as well.
