I find my 1000 size shimano has a coiling issue due to the small diameter of the spools, particularly for float fishing, regardless of various brands of mono I used, I think they are great for lrf or light lure fishing, I'm not keen on reels below a 4000 size(spool diameters vary dependant on manufacturer), but definitely not below a 3000, not saying you can't fish with them, as Kev proves, but just my preference...

I‘m In agreement with Alan; small diameter spools certainly tend to put coils in my line a lot more than wider diameter spools do; and because of this I find that casting smaller Wagglers any distance with a small diameter spool is nowhere near as easy in my experience.

I find that smaller diameter spools are ok with braid and fishing wagglers close up with minimal casting; or trying to balance a smaller rod; but I much prefer to use a wider diameter spool when trying to cast a smallish waggler any distance with ease.

I can only say - no coils, line's perfect (anything less and I wouldn't use the reel) and I can chuck a 3bb waggler much further than I can see it. The proof, as so many wrongly say these days, is in the pudding. :)

Line lay is as perfect as would be expected from the same reel in a bigger size Kev, mine is too and I wouldn't expect you to use subordinate gear, your just not that type of angler, however, I won't be rushing to use one lol....

I don't find a spin up to be the issue, the diameter of a smaller spool creates a memory on all the monos I have tried, some far worse than others, if you don't go for a month or so it could be worse, or not......

I'll tell myself off for taking HDYGO off topic. The reason I mentioned it is that I'm well aware that small spools can lead to line wanting to coil rather than straighten, and the coiling can lead to tangling, and small spools can reduce casting range, but I've been pleased to find these little Shimano's - I've used them a lot for 3 years now - have been great for light float fishing. If you look at the pic I posted, you can see that this model of reel is not as small as some; there's no standard behind sizing reels as 1000, 3000, 4000 etc. Anyway, side issue, excuse my deviation.

I didn't fancy sitting it out on the Severn today so headed to the Dee at Bangor on Dee for some trotting . Bloody cold wind as I set up and I wasn't over confident though the river looked bob on . Started on the island for nowt then moved upstream and caught a grayling around 8 oz . Had a wade further up but caught nothing . The wind was biting so I decided to walk downstream , just to get warm , tried a couple of spots on the big bend for nowt again before moving down by the foot bridge . I managed 2 grayling from here about the same size and had a pike grab my maggots as I left my rig in the water having a coffee . Quick chat with another ongler heading downstream who was struggling . I moved back upstream and managed to catch 5 more grayling over the next couple of hours , a couple arond an inch long the rest around a pound . I was pleased to catch to be fair and glad I made the right choice . It was pleasant enough out of the wind but hard to find a place it wasn't blowing .

Fished the Severn on Sunday , nearest stretch as I had some jobs to do first thing . As no one else was on I set up in the banker swim , cold wind and a lack of fish made my mind up for a move after a couple of hours . Not much better fishing but a bit more sheltered . Another guy came on and went off to the banker . I managed to hook and lose a couple of decent chub , he caught a couple . Not feeling it fishing wise at the moment but with the seasons end coming up fast I feel a bit obliged . Still waters don't evite me as much

I enjoy my Friday's which are normally my time so I like a relaxing start to the day , kedgeree and coffee for breakfast got my kit together and arrived at Bangor on Dee around 11 o'clock . Empty car park and not to cold as I set my rod up in the car park , that was a bit of a trick as the wind soon got up and was as biting as ever . I started on the island as usual , the river on the bones of it's arse and running clear though a bit of cloudy water coming in slowly from a little stream . I'd made a few floats of late and used a cork bob float taking a couple of swan shot to start with . Gave it 20 minutes fishing across but nothing doing . I usually fish upstream but thought I'd try downstream first trying the big bend first . A really gusty wind made things tricky and another 20 minutes with no bites made me move downstream . I waded out into the flow and trotted down a good length and eventually hooked a decent grayling around the pound mark , no more bites and trotting down 35 metres was a chore so off again downstream to by the bridge .This is normally a banker but the river was low and I had to wade out to trot . 40 minutes and nothing doing had me out again I moved again swapped to a lobworm down the side in a pool by the bridge and had some lunch and a coffee. Snagged up and pulled for a break , by now it was raining and I wasn't feeling the love . I swapped my pin for a fixed spool reel and swapped the bob float to a fairly heavy loafer to combat the wind . Back in the swim I'd caught in , first trot and I let the float go as far as I can see , well actually a little further because as I go to wind back I feel a fish , on then off . Bit pissed off as I am bloody freezing and bites are hard to come by . Next trot down around the same place another bite and this time I land a decent grayling around a 1 1/4 lb . Worked hard for another half an hour but that was it from here , both fish at around 35 metres . I move back to the big bend and get back in the river again , can't really feel my fingers at this point and I'm casting across the river as there is a weird eddy right in front of me with the water and wind making float control tricky , float goes under but I must admit I thought it was just the bottom until I feel a decent fish which gives a good account of it's self I thought I'd hooked a big grayling but it turns out to be a decent chub 4.8lb Next cast a grayling around 8 oz . No more and the cold is getting to me so I head back to the car but can't resist trying the island again , sheltered here and much less cold but no fish . packed in around 4 o'clock . Pleased with the results , earned them fish.

Back on the Severn today chasing perch , met up with a couple of mates on a stretch at Atcham . The river is deep on the inside so I got to try out my slider floats . I fished worms on the float rod and a maggot feeder on the tip rod. Started fishing at around 11 o'clock , slow going until around 2 o'clock when the float bobbed a couple of time before sliding off .Soon landed the culprit a 2 lb jack pike . I was surprised to get no interest on the maggot and around 3 o'clock I swapped it for a lobworm , ringing the changes made no difference and despite sticking it out to 6 o'clock nothing else to report fish wise . Love to have caught a perch but that's fishing, just can't seem to locate them at present.
