I almost confused myself this morning in trying to decide where to fish - not good as the confusion set in at 6.30am as I dropped down into Marlow town. Do I stay local and go for the roach ( again ) or do I head for a tench water. It's all this talk of ' tench challenges ' that had me in two minds.....
Anyway, I decided going for tench would be very speculative and my bait bag didn't really hold the right goodies, so local lake and roach it was, although the rather cold night didn't fill me with confidence !!

I was fishing by 7am and started catching immediately on hemp using the same style of long antenna float ( see previous posts ) with much of it out of the water (in an attempt to ' slow ' the bites ) and it worked well, ( most of the time ) as the antenna slowly sank from view - far more affective than a dotted down float IMO as it gave 'time' to react.... ...Sometimes the sinking would stop and the antenna rise in the water again, so I would then wait for a continuous ' sink ' before pulling into the fish.
Obviously I suffered the odd ultra fast bites, typical of 'on the drop' hemp fishing, but generally speaking I feel I caught more fish simply because I'd slowed the reaction time.

Over the morning I caught continuously and even managed a couple of fish on tares and wheat, but I think the hemp hook was really too small for these baits as many dead cert bites were missed. I tried maggot at one time without getting a touch, yet as soon a hemp was on the hook bites started again.

I would be telling porkies if I said every fish was decent but many of the 40+ catch did need the net with the best at 1lb 2ozs. I did catch a bigger fish but in my haste to organise camera and weighing, the fish ( laying quietly in the net and on the mat ) did a couple of flips which bought it clear of the net and with a fine double somersault, made it's escape !! I would hazard a guess at 1,5lbs or so........

Come 1.30pm and I started to lose concentration. The constant action of baiting and feeding with hemp, plus holding the rod at all time was taking it's toll so I decided to call it a day. I've no doubt in my mind that more fish would've followed had I stayed on, but I was well pleased with my catch and happy to head home !
In all I used 1/2 pint of hemp and this with only a few grains going in at one time as feed, and such was my work rate that I forgot about a hot drink and the flask was still 3/4 full when I left !!

A lovely morning witnessed by an angler sitting opposite me who failed to catch a single fish in five hours....

Who needs big tench and ' challenges' eh ??

Hi TC,

I have been keen for a while to try hemp / tares as a hookbait for roach on my local rivers - I think on the stick it could be an underused method. But I'm not so confident in getting it to stay on the hook - how do you hook yours? Years ago I remember using it with my granddad on the Thames and then you used to sort of wedge the bend of the hook in the split, but for me it was a bit unreliable, maybe because of the way the seed was prepared. Do you used ready prepared ( tinned ) hemp or cook it yourself?

Hugh....The original poster will be on your case if you ask such questions on the ' How did you get on ' thread, so I've opened an old thread titled ' hemp ' which may help you....................
I have also attempted to answer your question on that thread !

Sorry Simon !

At last, first outing on the bank since a shoulder injury in January kept me off the rivers for the final two months of the season. I decided to fish a local gravel pit for some carp, and hopefully some tench, up in the water using a Fox bubble. The conditions were not ideal with the water still very clear and not quite as warm as I'd hoped - the air temperature was pretty warm though with a lot of sunshine and a brisk southerly. Fished from 10.30am - 3pm (including a break for lunch and a couple of tea breaks) for five carp that wouldn't have troubled the scales (even if I'd remembered to bring them) but gave good sport on a through action 1.8t/c rod. If or IF because it’s a big if, I could manage a tench for the challenge it would have completed an enjoyable session - in the end I managed two........................:)

Our Thursday match was held on Toft Carp Lake@Rugby,conditions were far from ideal, still and flat and bright sunshine!,and the carp, all but shut up shop for most..Big Dave from Lychgate, fresh out of hospital from his 3rd heart attack!!:eek:drew end peg ,in open water ,and although losing five lumps, still put 63lb on the scales, for the win.."Whiskas" Wilson was 2nd from the other end peg, with 47lb,and John "the Squatt" Davies was 3rd with 27-8-0...My match consisted of 4 blank hours, trying everything and going through the card, before going into the last hour the float finally buried,on the 14.5m pellet line,it happened another 7 times and i managed 8 carp for 19-8-0:(,and about halfway down,of the 15 that fished...still it was a nice day out!:Dcommercials are easy though:rolleyes:;)Gazza...Tunnel Barn open match on tues, and a day out with the Legend that is Pete Rice on thurs ,next week

The Easterly winds up here have put a dampner on catches here the last week. At least for me. Weds produced just a few skimmers and small roach from a club lake. Today I sought my revenge on an easy water. The fish were cagey here as well in the chill wind and cold water despite the warm sun.
7 carp to high singles, roach, rudd and a stillwater chub all to the wonder bait..........bread flake.

I felt let down by breadflake, the wonder bait, failing to get a single bite on it last time out. Seems there has been a switch in the last week and maggots have been catching. Or I just fished poorly again.
Two small perch kindly threw themselves at a worm to save a total blank, and my landing net got another dose of UV. It's getting very cleansed now!

I spent the afternoon on the River Charente. First call was Chantrezac, near to the village. I was using my little 6 foot, one piece River Don Special quiver rod, Daiwa 1500 reel and 3lb line with a running ledger set up to 14 hook and worm bait. The first swim I tried was in amongst trees where the short rod would be beneficial. I could only approach from upstream, the way the fish would be looking and so Roobs and I crept in with rod already baited and ledger attached. I lobbed the ledger a few yards to the tail end of the flow near to a tree stump and before I had time to put the rod down the tip rattled and I missed the bite.

No more bites in the 20 minutes I stayed there and another swim a couple of hundred metres downstream, again a tail end of current into a pool was tried without success.

We walked back to the van and drove a couple of kilometres upstream to where the river is less rocky and shallow. It was at the point when I realised that my rod rest was still at the other place :(

Already faced with a potential Peter Crabtree 'Bad Angling Nomination' I made best I could by laying the little rod on the grass with a twig as a back stop. As the swim is a bit tight and steep I had to put one leg over the dog to prevent her accidentally rolling into the river as she lay sleeping just below where I was perched precariously on a gardener's kneeling pad.

First cast resulted in a quick pluck and the rat-a-tat-tat fight indicated a stripey who was so pleased to see me he came all over my little Decathalon landing net  .......

I searched the swim for another without success and then spotted some sporadic bubbling over the far side. Off with the worm, on with another leader with a Korum Quick-Stop and 1cm cube of Spam. Lobbed it over and was soon obliged with a river pig that looked in tip-top condition......

You can tell that this area is unfished by locals as those fish would have been in the pan by now.

Nothing more troubled us and so at around 7pm we set off to retrieve the rod rest.........

And back to Chez Nous for some home made chilli :)

Apologies for another perch picture, I can’t get enough of ‘em at the moment but no apologies for the hat (before you all start!).

A bit of a strange one really in that I usually begin on the waggler and change to the tip if the wind gets a bit too feisty but this time I set out from the off with the ultra light tip in consideration of the strong westerly that was blowing and I gave it a good couple of hours without any signs although it just didn’t feel right somehow and so I rigged up a 5SSG bodied waggler dragging a 5BB bulk and a no.4 dropper to counter what was a very strong tow and I think it was second put in over the initial feed when the float buried and I was into a good perch.

Not long after putting back in and the float buried again and I was into another of a similar size but right at the death the hook pulled as I was about to draw it over the landing net and for a split second the fish lay there as I dropped the rod, shot to my feet and scooped with the net only to see it gain new life and slither over the wrong side of the rim as I lifted.

One more perch of around a pound and a quarter later on after switching back to the tip with a light feeder along with a steady bite which didn’t develop and another which I think would have done but I snatched at it and missed.

Just another nice days perching really on my favourite worm hookbait with a nice result to boot…

You don't get nominated I'll just tell you...

Considering your circumstances I'm split between an award and a let off...

Hang on though? ( just read this again )

Went to Marsh Farm today. I was after the tench.
Started off with torrential rain and fierce winds, but it soon brightened up.
I ended up breaking my crucian pb 3 times with one of 2lb, 2lb 4 and then 2lb 7oz.
I also had one tinca of 4lb7 and a load of silvers between 8oz and a pound.
Not a bad day at all!
But I also managed to catch severe sunburn. Not good.

Gardener's not gardeners  Witch skool did you went at?

I forgot to mention that in between a cuckoo calling I heard the first nightingale of the year while fishing today. Started off with just one doing a short repertoire then it started to be answered by another one, and subsequently there were three at it. :)

Club match today on the GUC in rural Bucks. A fairly wide stretch 16m on most pegs and plenty of features across. However, the wind was howling straight down on the higher pegs. I set up my pole long but it was impossible to hold it still and it creaked a few times in the gusts. Not wanting an expensive broken section or two I left it. 10ft light bomb rod, tiny cage feeder and sweetfishmeal gb, with whole dendra on a 16 hook. First bite a good fish which sadly fell off..
Then a skimmer followed by a carp which smashed my hooklink. One more skimmer and a gudgeon and the first hour was gone. Literally not a touch after that. Picked up a few gudgeon on my top 3 in the last hour which saved my bacon.
Weighed in 3lb:8. for a section win. ( 2nd in my section had 2 skimmers and 2 gudgeon for 3lb:6. Which was where those last hour gudgeon paid off)
Winner on the windiest pegs had 20lb+ ( 9 skimmers) all on the bomb across.
2nd. 7lb+ 3rd 4lb+.
15 fished...

I will sum up my 'catch' report with this question..........
How many blanks before I can claim to be specimen hunting?
