Tried a new mark today, Rubha na h-Uamha (Point of the Caves I think, from my sketchy Gaelic) on Loch Bracadale, about a mile along from the other bits of the loch I'd fished recently. Navionics chart showed 10m depth contour fairly close in at about the same distance as the other spots so looked a goer.
Mile and a half walk in from my usual access, about half that from the Struan end so went for the short option . Mistake....Looked OK at the start

(looking back), as it had on Google Earth the pics on which were obviously taken in spring before the bracken grew. Had about half a mile of chest high stuff to negotiate. Fought my way through, on to last section on nice grass and dropped onto the further end of the point. 70 yards and a good bit shallower than expected, only 5 or 6 seconds to hit bottom, 100 yards out and little more so not sure of the chart's accuracy ! Tide just beginning to rise, two hours and not a sign of anything until had a mackerel on the retrieve. Had a look with feathers and small dexter on the lure rod but no more. Back on mackerel strip, nothing apart from a swimming crab,

Still, not a bad view to have when nothing's happening

After another hour tide was coming over the only comfortable ledge so moved back 100 yards or so to first point,

Depth the same but seemed more mixed ground with stone and weed patches among the sand which gave me a bit more confidence. Misplaced...
One little knock on the big rod which could have been anything, added another mackerel and four little pollack on a small krill lure but nothing to get too excited about.

Not much on the wildlife front either, a couple of Black Throated Divers and not a lot else.
Don't think the place is going near the top of my list but will give it another go at some point. Had a chat with a local back at the slipway who told me that I could have had an easier walk , grass all the way, by going in via a gate from a group of houses just off the main road. Booger...

Didn't go well today, as it was very windy I went for a semi sheltered place and a last gasp for a tench. Got there and did not fancy it so I sat and ate all my sandwiched for half and hour which turned out to be a mistake. Anyway I decided to make an effort, I had bought some part baked rolls which were going half price in the shop so I bought them to give them a try, they don't go on the hook at all. So with my sandwiches gone and not fancying opening a whole tin of sweetcorn as I doubted I was staying long , I decided to use up some half empty pellet boxes that have been in the bottom of my bag for some time, red robin soft hookers and sonubaits soft halipellets but they had gone hard so only chucked them in along with what was left of the robins and shredded part baked rolls and the red robins on the hook. I had one wobble on the float and that was it, never had any luck with these pellets all summer when I tried them, one tiny bream on the halipellets I think and nothing else, experiment over. Hour and a half fishing close in to the edge hoping a tench might come along, not had one all this summer and never one from this canal. That's it for me now with the tench. I might have a last look at the Mullet if they are still there and then maybe try for an autumn Bass and then retreat for the winter.
On the way home I somehow managed to break the rod, the last 3 inches snapped off, I think I can repair it though but it summed up the day.
Three buzzards, see two regularly here so this must be one of their young as well. Loads of swallows on migration and one un-identified wader skitted by me, I think it may have been a rare female Ruff but not sure. Should have followed first instincts and stayed sitting there after my sandwiches. Very windy and a bit chilly for fishing, it feels like summer is over.

I had some maggots and other bits of bait left over so decided to fish my local pool yesterday. It's walking distance from the house so I jumped in the car... Started around 6:30am loose feeding maggots and hemp. I could have done with another layer, it felt decidedly Autumnal. Had a mixed bag before 9. A couple of Crucians, a reasonable Perch of around 8oz, one small one and a handfull of decent Roach, 8oz up to maybe 10. Going to various baits. Tares, sweetcorn, maggots, bread all seemed to get bites sooner or later. The only thing they weren't interested in was caster. There didn't seem to be anything in particular they wanted. Lost the best Roach of the day when the Heron decided try and snatch my catch swooping in from the far bank just as I was about to net it.

After 9am it was slow going until 3:30 when I packed up but ended up with 6 or seven Crucians a Common of around 2lb, the two Perch the rest being Roach, 32 altogether.

A true mixed bag today. A friend and I visited a little fishery in Cheshire rumoured to hold monster Perch. After speaking to the owner, and he seemed genuine, I'm very excited for winter. Very very excited!

For today, it was prawns, worms, maggots and sweetcorn. All ledgered on running rigs, with the idea of a bigger perch in the back of my mind, but truly just looking to catch a bit of a mixed bag.

No bits on the Prawns but ended with Carp to 7lb on worms, chub, Perch to half a lb, roach, rudd, a mini Barbel and my first ever Eel (s). Not sure I'd take the bootlaces again, however, I'm pleased as punch to tick them off my list all the same.

A great day and my winter target of a 2lb Perch has taken a step forward, in terms of location if nothing else.

Would it be in the Frodsham area. ?

Fished a club fixture today on the Thames at Windsor. Usual set up, 15’ Ultralight, 3:4gr crystal insert waggler set as a slider to a 18 carbon match hook. The river was pushing a bit after the heavy rain yesterday and the next downstream peg was rather close, so I didn’t have a very long trot down. That and the brisk downstream wind made it far from ideal. In fact I had to cast upstream to allow the bait to get down and cock the float (8’deep) in the fast current which meant there was a bow in the line too. In a word it was damn difficult to present the bait properly, if at all.

I had my pole in the bag but the current was too fast for any of my river rigs, the chap on the next peg had to use a 15gr flat float in order to get his bait down.

I mixed 3 kilos of gb and fed 15 balls at the off, a very stiff mix of 2k of Black turbo and 1k of dark Super roach. Feeding hemp, I started with elderberry on the hook. It took a good 20mins to get my first bite, a roach. Form then on I chopped and changed hookbaits, maggot, caster and half a grain of corn. The caster and maggot were the most effective today with corn producing nothing.
During the 5 hours the roach came and went in spells, 80% of which were in the 4-6oz bracket with a few clunkers around 12oz.
Come the scales I knew I’d thrashed my neighbour but was clueless as to how the rest of the 19 anglers had done.
I weighed in 8:14:0 which surprisingly got me joint second overall with 9:4:0 of bleak winning the day. That’s the second time a net of bleak has won here but I simply couldn’t face doing it myself...

Just got back from a couple of hours swimming the stream, pretty naff session to be honest. The river was still up more than I expected and the water felt cold ! I do know the temp's dropped right down last night but I wouldn't have thought one night of lower temp's would have cooled the water so much. I reckon the rain must have been cold already when it fell from the skies recently.
Anyhow, I had a few dace and few small chub, lost a couple of chub to the oldest trick in the book, how on earth they do that trick I don't know!
A couple of small chub from one swim....

Couple of short sessions on the river over weekend. Dusted off a pole to fish bread and hemp using a flag float. Not that the flow was anything much but I like them for easing through a bait slower than the surface layer. Over 8feet of water at 6 m going left to right.
Nothing much of size but consistent bites after 20 mins of little and often. Mostly roach with few Rudd and skimmers.
Another chunky hybrid at last knockings had me staring hopefully into the net in case this one was my 2lbs roach.

No sign of any Mullet today, I thought they might have departed with the cold nights we had recently. Shame, I wouldn't have minded another try for them but I guess that's it till next year.. So, just a mess around with a float and bread in the margin but nothing but small fry. That just leaves me an autumn bass or a September 2lb+ roach to think about, I do a lot of that! I am a thinking angler!

Fished the Thames today. Caught 3 bream about 7lbs each on legered sweetcorn just as it was getting light. Ended up with 41 roach to 12ozs mainly on trotted wheat with some on hemp and tares. This morning though the boats, rowers, canoes were a total pain, not the most sensible choices of venue on a bank holiday!
