Update it would seem the wellies are past it the heels have cracked on both i am going to try expanding foam then a rubber patch see if i can rescue them they are so darn comfortable

My old mate Derek Blinston (AKA Spiders) who very occasionally posts on here, that is if his clockwork computer is working, is a master boot repairer. This is an example of his craftsmanship, the boots probably cost him two quid from Oxfam, the sealer twenty five quid from B&Q.

Oxford, and occasionally Warrington Lancs
I was in two minds on where to go, Newlands or Lodge Farm . Both a similar distance away .

A friend was contemplating on Newlands but he wasn't sure,

A quick call in the tackle shop for some maggots , I threw nearly a pint of casters away in the garden .
I was in Warrington at the weekend ,called in the local AD Friday evening for some maggots for a possible match on Saturday .

Anyway come Sunday and getting ready to come back to Oxford ,I checked the maggot box and over half a pint had gone to casters , the box was left out overnight under cover of patio table with the lid off , never had problems before .
So armed with fresh bait, and asked how Newlands was fishing,Not very well was the reply .

So Lodge farm it was , I already had my tackle in the car from the weekend so I was ready to go .
Also with it being a cool day, I reckoned lodge farm pools would warm up quicker due to depth and amount of sun they get .

Got to chosen swim , there was only one other angler there and he was on the other pool .
The feeder rod stayed in the car , I decided on the short pole .

Set up 3 pole rigs I normally use on there , already set for the depths of the margins and out to nine metres .
A quick plumb up to confirm the depth and I find it a foot shallower than last time . All the way from the margins out to mine metres , the bottom on this peg is more or less flat.
So adjusted the pole rigs to fish dead death at twelve inches .

Bait was corn and maggots .
I spent half an hour sat on my box pinging corn into a couple of swims in front of me and to my left . A handful of maggots went into the two margin swims . Plus around twenty at a time catapulted over the corn .
Water started to cloud up as the carp moved in starting from my left to in front of me .

I had a few 3lb and just shy of 5lb.
I saw one or two larger ones cruising just below the surface , so I was dropping a rig in front of them baited with five maggots on a 16 hook .
I caught two of 10lb doing this .
Had one bite on corn at the start and the hook pulled .I think this was due to the depth and elastic probably a bit to heavy ,it was a solid 16/18 , So a change of topkit to one with hollow 8/10 in it did the trick , I managed to steer them away from the baited areas and play them to the net.

Even though they were feeding , they seemed to come in fits and starts ,many a time ignoring my baited hook .
Packed up after 3 hours ,happy with what I caught.

The bloke on the other pool was having a decent day catching silvers and the odd small carp .

Got back home and threw remainder of the maggots on the garden and some on the bird feeder trays . Must have had the best fed birds in Oxford that day .
Funny enough I neve had a bite from the margin swims despite the occasional carp moving in to feed . And didn't have one silver fish , which usually zoom in and pinch the bait before the carp get there.

I am contemplating putting the heavy gear away ,such as margin poles and heavy duty feeder rod, and concentrate on the canal and the river for the next couple of months , A bit of whip fishing, light canal wand and Waggler fishing on the canal, And whip and Waggler on the river , and maybe feeder when the weed dies down .

One of the reasons for this is that the river is 10 minutes away and the canal just over that , Whereas Newlands and Lodge Farm are nearly 30 minutes .with the day light getting shorter , I will have more time fishing .

Phoned my friend up , he went to Newlands and said it was hard going , no carp showing at all , he said a few had gone belly up over the past couple of weeks .and not sure why .
He set a feeder rod up with groundbait feeder and maggots , Had a few decent bream and a some skimmers .

Fishing time has been lacking since leaving “La Belle France” 4 months ago with life having been a curious mix of nomadic living, house hunting and working for a “free roof over head”. However we have now moved into our new permanent home in Ilfracombe, just a long jump from the harbour and a sea view if I balance on the chest of drawers, stand on tip toe and use a mirror to peep round the corner and squint! Now despite a lifetime coarse fishing, my experience of sea fishing amounts to not catching mullet for one morning in Corsica and catching blennies and an eel at Bude a few weeks ago. I’ve been trying a touch of LRF ( Light Rock Fishing) off the harbour a couple of times for a half dozen of micro pollack, but no worries any sea fish is a new PB. But with a bit more time this afternoon I decided to grab some lures and go for a walk to my nearest rocky cove. With a low but incoming tide there was an opportunity to stand on rocks and cast plugs over shallow broken ground. What a fantastic inspiring place to fish! Not relaxing, can’t take my eye off the ball or I’m getting stranded by a rapidly rising tide, tide range here is about 9 metres which is nearly 30ft in old money. And what a result, 1 hours fishing produced 2 bass taking just a few yards out in only a couple of feet of water, savage takes on a tight clutch gave the arm a good workout. Best fish 3lb 2oz no giant, but I’ll work my way up to them!
Projects for the future, trying for bass on the fly, some proper beach casting, and maybe a bit of boat fishing, I’ve got my eye out for a fishing kayak too! Exciting times ahead, I’ll need a spot of coarse fishing to relax, it’s a long walk to the nearest barbel though!

I went to a club lake for a work party this morning . I was the first one there and it looked good as the morning mist cleared.

I chucked some tackle in the car for a bit of river fishing. Which was just as well, as my knees started to give out after a couple of hours.

I took myself off to a stretch of the Eden about a mile away from the lake but belonging to another club. I was surprised that the car park was empty and I didn’t see another soul all day. I caught a variety of fish; chub, gudgeon, roach, rudd, dace and bleak. A proper mixed bag but nothing of significance. It was a pretty swim and probably the deepest on the stretch at about eight feet.

There were some interesting birds. A hawk came through at speed and there were a couple of kingfishers whizzing about all day a group of yellow wagtails were also flitting around.

The river flows from left to right, the arm opposite leads off to a pumping station and pond. I have had some decent tench and bream from here, there are supposed to be some decent carp, but I am yet to see one let alone catch one. The club I did the work party for stocked some barbel on the adjoining stretch a few years ago, so you never know what you could catch. This, as far as I’m concerned is what makes river fishing so great.

Usual club water again yesterday, it’s fishing so well I don’t feel the need to go anywhere else, arrived at seven am to find the same two on again, just setting up, but the peg I fancied was free, so set up there, I had a change from my pole and I’d set up a rod I bought a few years ago, it’s a Shimano commercial float rod 10 ft long and fairly light action, and just a nice length for down the margins, coupled with a Shimano 2500 baitrunner with 8lb nylon, just to handle the larger carp which are getting a bit big for the pole as they fight hard in here.

started out in front at the bottom of the margin slope on maggots, and had a nice roach first cast plus a few skimmers and perch plus a gudgeon, then had a small carp, followed by another, plus one on the tip rod to my left on an alarm as a sleeper, few more like this and then it went quite at lunchtime as usual, it turned into a really warm day, soon had my fleece of and waistcoat it was like a summers day.

after 3pm I fed some over wetted ground bait in the margins, plus maggots bunch of maggots on the hook and into a good carp first drop in, I was glad of the reel as it went straight across the pond some seventy yards away to the far bank, and then had a tour of the pond for a while, managed to bring it back to me were it stayed deep for a good five minutes or so, before I could net it, that weighed 14lb 8ozs a nice mirror, later on another one which looked like it’s double which was 2ozs less in weight, then had a run of barbel up to three lbs, four in total, finishing with a 10lbs 1oz common carp.

so another good day, plenty of fish and nice weather, even a few red admirals flying around, plus the usual buzzard and robin, the swallows have been gone a couple of weeks now, a bit earlier this year, a few more days like this would be nice before winter sets in, enjoyed it

In my attempt to kick off my winter perch fishing on the local Dales river , I succeeded in catching 4 perch for a total weight of possibly a pound, 2 chub of similar size and - thankfully- a real string puller in the form of a doughty 5-3 chub . And another PB , my third from the same stretch - a signal crayfish . I have caught lots by hand but this little sod had managed to get hooked by his claw . And then the ungrateful brute tried to nip me. At least I knew that it wasn't my fault I'd been missing so many knocks and tweaks - and it also confirmed why crayfish lures work so well here

I posted on here a week or so ago about fishing a crucian and tench lake that had been dug out and named Pete’s Pond, after the ex bailiff Peter Hatt, who was the bailiff for the adjoining lake and who did a sterling job in looking after it. I’ve just heard the sad news that he passed away from MND yesterday. Strange that I should have mentioned him only a few days ago.

I fixed a pair of Muckboots last winter when the heel came away. I believe it may have been my fault in storing them in the loft. I think the extreme heat ruined the glue. I repaired them with Stormsure adhesive and have used them about a dozen times since. It cost about £10 for enough adhesive to make a decent job. I made sure the surfaces were roughened up with emery paper and a burr in a dremmel tool. Then cleaned it with alcohol. I taped them all up and left it for twenty for hours. The boots cost about £100 to replace so a tenner was okay.

Well todays session wasnt too bad and after a slow start little did i know a nice surprise was around the corner.was meant to be going on the nidd with my mate from work but after he pulled out i went on the swale instead.didnt take float rod as after all the rain weve had the last couple of days was perfect conditions for barbel fishing.the only problem was the pegs were steep and slippy.in the end i plumped for peg 56 which at least had a flat bottom to put my chair up but was still hazardous to get down.so after a chub of around the 1lb was in the net and then a nice take resulted in a barbel of around 3lb.then nothing for around 3 hours or so then wallop the rod flew round and after a superb scrap a clonking barbel was in the net.i thought at first it was a double but tipped the scales at 8lb 14oz.makes it all worthwhile does a fish like that.all 3 fish were taken on robin red luncheon meat.packed in at 2.00pm but still got a 6 hour session in.😁

Evening folks
(excuse and typos still on this temporary keyboard) not done a lot recently with the weather not knowing what it wants to do but managed to get out Saturday on to my local river (Tern) and had a bit of a surprise i think someone must have dumped a pond full of roach in there because that is almost all i caught some reasonably nice ones but only 1 Trout and a couple of Dace but roach fish a chuck almost .
I hope all things being good to get out tomorrow Tuesday weather permitting see if the roach invasion has spread out

Usual club water yesterday, as usual slow in the morning but picking up in the afternoon, feeder rod in margin on alarm and my 13ft Korum float rod for a change from the pole, fishing maggots on float rod over a few loose fed ones, had a few skimmers and roach plus a couple of gudgeon.

took the keepnet out at 3pm, and fed the margins for later, and had an hour casting the method feeder across to the island, had a barbel, carp, and an F1, in three casts, and then lost a carp which took me around a loose branch in the water, and snapped the hook length, did get the branch out which had a few hooks and pieces of line in it, so one less snag.

the carp came into the margins later, so swapped the float rod for my nash dwarf rod, 9ft long with a 2and a 1/4 test curve, using one of my pole margin rigs fished almost under the rod tip, this proved ideal catching me 3 more carp up to 7lb or so, on a bunch of maggots on a size 10 hook, think this could become my go to margin set up.

so not a bad day I’d no tench again although some of the other did get one or two, finished with four carp, two barbel and fifteen assorted silvers, pleasant day weather wise dry and quite mild with some warm sunshine in the afternoon, still one or two damsel fles about, and the robin was taking a few maggots I threw to it, just one at a time as it’s very wary of the resident sparrow hawk, just four of us fishing and I was last too leave as usual, nice day out.

A couple of weeks ago I returned from a four-day fishing trip to the River Wye with a couple of mates. Given a late June house move and a surprise hip replacement for my wife in mid-July it’s only the 6th time I’ve been fishing this year -- poor me!

Arriving at the river about 11 o’clock we settled into three swims fairly close together. Mine was on one of those salmon groynes you often see. I’d set up with two hair-rigged 8mm robin red pellets on a 12, 10lb fluoro 36” hook link and 12lb line; cast out into roughly the middle of the stream with a 3oz ledger weight. After half an hour I’d had a couple of those ‘small chub’ knocks; no one else had had any activity at all.

Wye22Chub2.jpg

At 2 o’clock I had a better bite which manifested itself as a 3lb 11oz chub which fought well; about three quarters of an hour later I had another, smaller, chub of 3lb. After that it went a bit quiet, so I decided to try a luncheon meat attack which prompted a few knocks but nothing solid. It was time to unleash my secret weapon – I had brought with me four slices of black pudding! Using a 10mm punch I prepared some pellet sized pieces which slid beautifully onto the hair rig and Kwik-Stop looking irresistible: alas, the fish seemed uninterested.

It was a mild mid-October afternoon, and the river had a bit of flow and colour about it. The chap who runs the stretch came down to check on things and greeted us with the usual,

“What you fishing here for?” in his chirpy Welsh lilt, adding,

“You should be up at the top end. that’s where all the doubles are coming out!” I’m sure he meant well but he didn’t have to finish with the classic, “You should have been here last week!” How many times have I heard that.

Anyway, the afternoon finished with my two mates blanking, and my last chuck, which I cast ten yards further downstream than usual, resulting in a 3lb chub on luncheon meat.

Wye22Chub3.jpg

Back at the digs we met up with a few other anglers and the story was the same.

“A few bloody chub!” One sneered. “Only flaming chub” snarled another. “Effin’ chub…”

What is it with these anglers? I know that most come here to catch barbel, but chub are lovely fish and the ones I caught gave a good account of themselves. I was annoyed.

Second day to follow…

Andy

The drought over the summer still affects the river Lot. Very little flow most of the time and I am reliant on my phones RiverApp letting me know of the occasional lump of water being released by the dams upstream.

I spotted one such lump and phoned my friend Alistair to see if he wanted a few hours at the river. To choose a suitable swim I had to estimate where this lump of water would be passing, I felt a weir we had checked out in the Spring would be the best chance.

Above Vers.jpg

.....and there was some flow when we arrived!

It was Alistair that got the fish towards the tail of the weir, he managed two barbel about 5 lbs and a mid-double carp.

IMG_20221022_155551.jpg

I fished a heavy lead upstream into the weir and caught nothing!

Yesterday I was at a campsite with my wife, it's on the river of course! There was minimal flow but I managed four barbel around 3 pounds to 4 pounds from a delightful swim where the beach was made up of mussel shells.

This is a very rich river, plenty of food for those carp!

When I got back from our camper-car trip I found a battered parcel by the front door. It was the Korum Big Water rod I had ordered from Germany, for when the river finally gets to be a torrent again.

IMG_20221027_135503.jpg

By some miracle the rod inside was undamaged!!!!!
