Century also did the AK47 and FMJ (Full Metal Jacket), both carp rods unsurprisingly.

Diawa ‘Ninja’ range of rods and reels.

There used to be some more descriptive names for rods such as the old Jim Gibbinson ‘Clooper’ Carp rod: named after the noise that surface feeding Carp sometimes make. I used to have a couple of these which I made from rod kits back in the 70s.
Plus the ‘Water Rail’ Canal ‘Winkle Picker’ which I still occasionally get out.

I'm no expert on special forces operations. However, after thinking about it, hiding in bushes for days on end, pooping into plastic bags, and long periods of utter boredom interspersed with short bursts of excitement, sounds quite like the way that some modern specialist anglers go on to me.

There's always, at least in my lifetime, been a vein of martial/military language embedded in fishing. Battling the savage-biting, hard-fighting barbel, and all that malarkey. Yes, I'm as keen on fishing as anyone else on here, but that language is a bit daft, and I'd suspect that in part it disguises the asymmetry of us bothering fish that are generally innocent, harmless creatures looking for a meal, by making it sound like we've squared up in a test of strength and courage. Even the term "bite" (how many of the fish we catch have teeth?) adds a bit of extra drama to getting a take. The "savage bite" is a hooked and alarmed fish bolting. The "fight" is resistance to being predated. Fish "fight" (despite the derision of those who regard bream as wimps, as if it's a matter of moral courage) in proportion to their muscle mass, body shape and the type of water in which they've been doing their "fight training" (lol). The crazy rod names are the tip of an iceberg.

Re the Porky Pig.........some of you might not be old enough to remember that when feeder fishing was in it's infancy it was often referred to as fishing the pig, or plastic pig, so the name is clearly an attempt at a humorous play on that.

It didn't do it much harm as it was one of the best and most popular rods of that era, and still sought after today for heavy feeder fishing, especially on rivers.

I still have one of the earlier Porky Pigs. 12ft Feeder MPP 12HF (1-4oz Casting Weight). I've no idea whether it's one of the originals, but I know there were later versions. The one I have has the decidedly old fashioned put in joints. Seemingly, worth about £35 on a good day. It was a rod for the Trent in my match fishing days and it gave good service in the early days of method feeders on the new fangled carp match waters in the mid 90s.

Gerry’s are selling a rod called a Hooligan.
I bought one Mike.
I was going to rid it of all the runners and its reel seat, lovely blank but all else didn't suit me. Before I could get round to the conversion I switched my attentions from Carp to Barbel.
It's still in my garage, never used it since I bought it back in the early nineties.

I think the silliest was a rod manufacturer in China showing off a new range at a big exhibition and they had the logo made and put on all of the rods and the logo said - and I kid ye not - 'Welcome To My Dog Show' !!!!!!!!

I asked why on earth they printed that and the lady said that the engineer had seen that logo on TV and just liked the style !!!!!

I think there's a bit of potential in this poetic nomenclature. Defo no worse than the technicist melodrama of our Sigma RX2 Pro Dominator blah blah. First one has a bit of a barbel feel. Second one - weed-smoking carper?

Handing Sleepy Tent Wake-up Rod
Handing Stock Pond Easy Catch Rod
Handing Flashy Finish Poor Materials Rod
Etc
