There's always, at least in my lifetime, been a vein of martial/military language embedded in fishing. Battling the savage-biting, hard-fighting barbel, and all that malarkey. Yes, I'm as keen on fishing as anyone else on here, but that language is a bit daft, and I'd suspect that in part it disguises the asymmetry of us bothering fish that are generally innocent, harmless creatures looking for a meal, by making it sound like we've squared up in a test of strength and courage. Even the term "bite" (how many of the fish we catch have teeth?) adds a bit of extra drama to getting a take. The "savage bite" is a hooked and alarmed fish bolting. The "fight" is resistance to being predated. Fish "fight" (despite the derision of those who regard bream as wimps, as if it's a matter of moral courage) in proportion to their muscle mass, body shape and the type of water in which they've been doing their "fight training" (lol). The crazy rod names are the tip of an iceberg.
