carp challenge

Cheers Ben

Probably be next weekend now but looks good

Ian

No probs I have a mate at work who is a full on matchman He did tell me where the carp pegs are - If I see him Monday I'll ask him where they are , tricky to land though in the canal - there are lots of stories of match anglers suddenly seeing their laccy stretch right out and not being able to do a thing about it.

There is also a big shoal ( or was that's another story ) in the basin by the Gallery in Walsall I was fishing there last year on a whip and an absolute monster came past - must have been 20 plus , I got my rig out the way pretty quick as he would have smashed it right up.

I go past there every morning so i was tempted to try pre baiting for them , maybe a tin of sweetcorn every morning in the same spot ? The water is gin clear at the moment though.

There's plenty of carp in the canals round here, big ones too (high 20s), but I just can't stand fishing for them...

Too much dog ****, kamikaze cyclists and every 5mins the obligatory 'have you caught mate?' conversation whilst skylining you swim...

If you stay late to avoid the crowds, you then have to run the gauntlet of p*ssed people at closing time...

Good luck to all of taking up the canal challenge; you've got a lot more patience than me! :)

as I said I would previously, I did try today. a very narrow arm of the GUC.
in NW Herts. There were carp topping at floating debris in on the far side.
I set up a shallow pole rig and after plumbing up found only about 2ft of water. bit of scissoring got my rig to 3ft long, size 12 hollo elastic set fairly loose in the top 2. I selected a size 14 spade end gamakatsu pellet/ paste hook tied straight through on 0.13 rig line. Found a Hovis best of both sliced crustless loaf in the supermarket and punched pellet sized baits out with a meat punch.

gudgeon, roach, skimmers, 1 mad perch.............

NO carps...........

The biggest problem with canal carp is that they rarely show themselves so locating them is hard work. I live right next to the Coventry canal and it certainly has carp in it, but, I walk a couple of miles of it every day with the dog and the only time I ever see the carp is when they die and float to the surface, none of the usual jumping clear of the water, rolling, crashing around in weed beds. They are invisible...

Absolutely!Trying to locate the carp that inhabit any canal in our country is definately hard work.

Trying to locate the carp that inhabit any canal in our country is definately hard work.I live fairly close to the Trent and Mersey canal in Stoke on trent and i to walk the mut miles each day looking for the Carp that live in there,i take bait out with me and bait up certain spots that show signs of encouragment and since i started doing this i have had pretty good success with fish to 27 lb (i will upload pics ASAP,im new to this site today.) Which when you think about it given the sheer size of the overall run of water and feeding oppertunities the fish have is probably dwarfed by some 45 - 50 lb monster somewhere.I grew up in Lancashire and where i lived the stretch of canal i lived close to had been sealed off at both ends which provided about 3 miles of water i visit this water occasionaly and it still produces the fish everytime with the water being sealed at both ends there are some big captive fish lurking in the water im not going to mention any of the places where i fish and bar the fact i was lucky enough to live by a stretch of canal water that was never ever going to have a boat run down it again i have still had to put the effort in overall to find the big cyp's that dwell in the canals. It wouldn't be to hard to search out those bits of disused canals where the fish are held captive and have a great breeding legacy,as for those canals that still operate, baiting up certain spots that give you that feeling has been working for me but can get expensive if your sticking in bag after bag of Grange.Groundbait, pulses, old boilies, bread and the like are all guaranteed to get you the signs you need to spot those invisible canal carp

It stands to reason Nathan but mind you don't hook into a dead cat floating in your local cut because your torch wasn't bright enough! LOL

Do the fish react to the weirding way?

I used to fish for Lea Navigation Carp and I applied the same Carp and Water Craft abilties I would for Still water Carp.

Look for overhanging trees and shrubs, the drop of areas, the shelves, Turning bays and look for topping and moving Carp.

Once these areas were located, I would bait these holding areas and fish them at dawn and dusk, when there were less EEs about to plunder your hard work.

Hi all.

when i was younger i used to travel my local canal stretches (for any locals near me - tyburn house upto and past the old kingsley pub) and i used to see the carp topping in the water.....was thinkingh about a session up the top end towards the bridges and after seeing this thread thought sod it lets go for it. So i just tried to do a quick bit of research whilst at work and come across this topic on another forum stating that the club who own these stretches have electo-ed all carp out of this and such at the beginning of 2011....please please PLEASE tell me this isnt true or that its been rectified and re-stocked?!

These stretches of canal are like 6 mins from my house and i'd absolutely love to have a few sessions there.

Does anyone know these stretches and if it is true, are there any relatively close and generally as quiet as the stretch tends to be by the old kinglsey pub (now renamed not sure on name)

Thanks all

Matt
