Paul, dont let lack of local knowledge stop you. We've all been targetting new areas of canal we haven't previously fished before. If its a fairly nice day you'll probably see a carp or two on the surface, let them tell you where to fish.
Your local tackle shop/match anglers should be able to help you locate a few fish as well. Just walk down the canal one afternoon & get talking.

I'm well prepared to give it a go, and to wander the stretch looking for fishy clues.

I'm just a little short of day ticket water. Derby seems to lack day ticket canals and good (by my exacting standards) still waters for coarse fishing.

I'm fine if I want to spend £18 to cast a fly for a few hours though.

Good man Beaker. Take a look around Hungerford if you can. I've had Carp near the town to 26lb but Iknow there are a few bigger there. Caught my fish off the top on naan bread.
Paul H, hope you do give it a go, the more the better. When first looking for Carp on the canal I always start looking for "live-aboard" boats with the kitchen window facing the water. (all the kitchen waste gets scraped off the plates into the cut there) You get a swim ready pre baited.

Right, sorted.

Erewash canal, somewhere between the Trent Lock and Long Eaton.

I shall be aiming to go for a walk down there this weekend, maybe stick a rod in the boot too - just in case.

Cheers for the tip Mark, looking on Google Maps there appear to be plenty of moorings down that end, some of them must be at least semi-permanent.

Well, I walked the stretch today with a bag of boilies. There are plenty of permanently moored house-boats as well as barges and other vessels. Lots of other features to aim at as well.

I bunged a few handfulls of boilies into a couple of likely looking swims and intend to go back next Friday for the day. One simple boilie-baited carp rig and a float set up I reckon.

The stretch seems to get mostly float fished for roach, bream and other smaller species, judging by the club's website and what I saw today. So I reckon a slightly beefed up float rig and some baits the fish are used to, like maggot and corn over hemp, won't go amiss.

Might get me a bonus tench or two as well.

Good luck Paul. Finding the fish is usually the hardest part with canal Carp. Rigs ets not so important.

there are 40's to be had from the canal in and close to London:wh

There are lots of big fish waters that are next to the canal and these waters have flooded over the years. This has led to a few fish, with the right genes, getting into the canal.

Nathan would you like us to come along and bait the swim for you and cast your rods out as well ?. LOL

Ian, you're too kind - that would be perfect!! I could sit in a pub round the corner & you could just give me a shout when I get a run :D
