Despite the sales pitch, there's nothing particularly lightweight about Daiwa Air AGS rods (or any other UK made Daiwa rods). They actually made lighter (weight) float rods back in the 90s. Their lightest match rod offering in a couple of decades was a relatively inexpensive offering (SR3??) that wasn't made in the UK.

My own 13' Air AGS Match rod (original, not the new one with an ALPS reel seat) comes in at 205g on my kitchen scales. Whilst I make no claim about their calibration and accuracy, they are good enough for a comparison. That comparison comes in the form of a 13' Browning Sphere Match which is 145g on the same scales. That 60g difference is slightly over two ounces. Just to further explode the myth of the Air AGS being light, the 17' Drennan Acolyte Float is 201g.

The fact that people have the impression that Daiwa Air AGS rods are light is testament to a combination of their balance and the power of advertising.
Marketing has much to answer for. I actually caught on a marukyu pellet today. They were perhaps the most expensive launch in fishing. Before anyone asks, no it hasn't taken me 10 years to catch on one. Anyone old enough to remember babycham in the 60's saw the perfect will example of the "art"

I've got 5 Harrison rods that get used for barbel and carp and even the lightest - an Avon - has triple-legged rings throughout. Some are 20 years old and the rings are all perfect and all are carried and stored made-up.

There's more of a case for single-leg rings on light float rods where it's claimed rings with two feet fractionally stiffen the action, but I don't find that any big gain. My ancient Diaflash float rods all have triple-leg rings throughout and you'll struggle to find rods that are as featherweight and sweet-actioned, this side of the rather marmite Acolytes whose action I find peculiar anyway. I have float rods with single leg rings, and even with care you can find rings getting slightly bent on their way into and out of the bag.

On the positive side, Daiwa's rings have saved me from the outside chance of acquiring another rod I don't nee

If you can get the JPZ pellets ,they are good also the groundbait .You need to find shops that have old stock , Marukyu no longer trade in UK from what I have heard .
I am also using the Fjuka pellet range, had some good catches on those .

Not caught a thing on the fjuka pellets so cannot rate them. My pursuit of a custom rod has been interesting to say the least with much indifference from a couple of “ professional rod builders” and with one being positively rude. He mustn’t need the business or only likes to make 3 identical carp rods. Anyway I found a guy with a good reputation who has been very attentive and helpful so I have gone ahead. I will reserve judgement and further comment until I get the rod.

Mark. I have 4 full jars of jpz 8mm tough nori ( green). If you would like one or two just say and I will put in the car.
I couldn't catch a cold with any colour in 6mm. But the tough in 8's and 10's are ok! They missed a trick I think not making 10mm in tough. Black is the best for me, amazing smell. Some liken it to a mix of bovril and betaine. Tried to replicate but I have not been successful.

Fjuka pellets.
Just appeared on youtube - Tommy Pickering, as a prelude to a plug for these, walks the length of a brilliant but very heavily pressured length of chub and barbel filled middle Trent, split between two clubs (I'm in both) and after drumming up yet more pressure - eeh! look at that chub 'e's just caught!, this is worrits all about etc - gets his fjuka plug in.
What rare and special river stretches don't need is someone blabbing all over the internet just to raise their profile and flog product they're associated with.
Fjuk off, I'd say.

About 3 years ago Sam, I had 4 x 11' feeders all made up with the same reels, as I had 4 of those two. I often took all 4 with me to try to compare on the fish playing, but various conditions, baits and fish sizes meant that was not all all accurate.
Without doubt though the best casting was with the guru aventus. The 2nd the silverlite, then the ags air and finally the tourney pro. From memory too the air was by far the lightest. Intrigued by your findings so I have had a look at daiwa sport catalogue. It is not helpful when some of the rod weights are in ozs and others in grams plus guru dont seem to list weight. Not checked the silverlite but that was on a pair with the others. The air and the pro are virtually the same at 165 g. I suspect it has to be down to the balance?

Hi Alec , I have jars of red green and black . The black are good over some black Fjuka pellets , or when fishing hemp as fed , I alternate between the Marukyu and Fjuka.
Some people try them a couple of times and don't catch then bin them .
I gave a mate a few white ones to try , he had heard of the Fjuka but not seen any .
Put a couple on his hook, out with the feeder, tip went round within a couple of minutes , 15lb carp in the net , prior to that is was decent bream on maggot,
Cast out again near to his swim , Bit of a longer wait around 10 mins , and another low double carp .

I bought fjuka when it first came out. No fish but not the baits fault.I use 14 very rarely, usually 10/12. I found them a bit small, but as you have probably gathered , I have a lot of experience of being an idiot.

Just get a few and make them into a pellet size and put on the hook .
They have brought some new ones out that can be used direct on the hook or moulded around a banded pellet .

I had the SR3 I think it retailed at around £120 , was a brilliant rod , Sold it to buy something else .

Not yet Kev , I have read the reports.
I will see if I can find any stockists .
They brought two purist barbel rods out ,this one is the better one.

Shimano themselves are no help.

But a bloke at Bobco told me they've not been released yet, but will be at some future date, along with new reels and even poles!
But he couldn't say when as even dealers don't know.
Tracking down Shimano gear is a bit like fishing these days.

The Aernos pole I bought , I had to phone every Shimano stockist I knew, ended up buying it from Oakwood Angling ,Welwyn Garden City.
