You mean I exposed your ramblings for what they are and you have no reply.

...and further
"My comparison with pike and cormorants is that they both eat fish, but small pike in particular eat small fish. And when there are a lot of them, they are unlikely to start eating each other and therefore regulate themselves."

Whereas what you actually said was that the ONLY difference was that pike have scales not feathers.

In fact, when there are a lot of pike, that's when they feed on their brethren most heavily.

...and while you're challenging me and others to produce their degree in marine biology before we speak on a mere internet forum, what challenge have you issued to Bob Nudd who communicated his bigoted views to millions?

Is Nudd qualified in marine biology?
Are you?

"what are you basing your comments on have you read any papers on the subject or just joining in with no grounding on the subject"

What comments? The only comments I have made are to say that I do not believe Bob's view will lead to a national Pike slinging competition.
Which is the opposite to what you feel could happen. There is no evidence to show this will or won't happen, is there?

I've made no comment about the rights or wrongs of a cull and what this may do to any given water.

I am merely trying to keep this in perspective. I don't beleive it will change anglers views on pike, to the extent that they are all going to start bashing the hell out of them.

Providing the views of individuals do not breech libel laws, and those that cover racism and now agism, be likely to condone and encourage terrorist acts,or discrimiate against the disabled, gay or women in the workplace, you can say anything you like in todays society!
However, hold an opinion that is different to the majority and you risk being labled a crank, idiot, or a short sighted moron. Thus what you accept as the right of free expression in 2006 is clearly a myth.
I might disgree with many people but I respect their right to hold such views, that is what democracy is all about. Lets get a sense of proportion here please, we are just talking about one mans view about 'nusience'pike, not children being molested and murdered.
Debate is fine but lets not get into name calling.

Agreed Peter but it is no longer "one mans view" when published in a paper that sells millions of copies every week it becomes a "manifesto"

Bob can say what he likes in private but when he advocates this type of action in the public forum then he has to be reigned in.

it's mine all mine mwahahahahahah!

i wish i knew some thing about football i might be able to do something good then.

paul my theory works on the fact that if he hadn't said it they wouldn't have been reminded of their hatred of the fish.

the same effect that we got when jack straw mentioned muslim women taking off their veils and right wing extremists started abusing muslim women more.
it gives them the push and they think the right to do it.

I am NOT saying that Bob Nudd is correct in what he says, but then again, I'm not saying he's entirely wrong.

I am. He's totally wrong, completely out of order.

He is entitled to express an opinion and for all "SENSIBLE" anglers to either take it on board or argue "Sensibly" against it.

Calling for a blanket pike cull on three named rivers in a national newspaper, just becuase he gets a few roach snatched off the end of his line..? Get real.

I would also point out that in the past you have all asked "why can't we all pull together?" Is it just possible that when someone raises a point to be discussed, even the culling or removal of pike, you all go apesh!t and call the man a moron?

I just don't know what most of you want except to say that you make one hell of a fuss on here, but when it comes to the hard grind of attending fisheries meetings, running clubs, getting involved with groups and being elected to councils and RFERACs - you all seem to find hiding holes. "Let some other fool do it" is fast becomming the motto of angling.

I help run a club which campaigns to conserve pike and pike fishing. We've got quite a lot going on at the moment.

We've been instrumental in winning the pike legal protection in Ireland for the first time ever.

We're campaigning for a public enquiry over a massive water transfer scheme which threatens both fisheries and bird reserves in the Fens.

We're doing several other things, which now include lobbying clubs which control the rivers where Bob Nudd thinks we need a pike cull.

The difference is he knows what he's talking about Woody. You clearly don't.

Last burst -

"The difference is he knows what he's talking about Woody. You clearly don't."

He hasn't demionstrated it yet otehr than name calling and neither have you Chris. It is you that clearly doesn't understand how nature can work, but if you want preserve a few stunted pike, carry on. It's one thing campaigning for respect for them, but you must understand with any animal when the times comes to hold a cull in order to strengthen the remaining stock.

IF one is necessary in this case.

I'm out of here now as I have a big meeting to attend tomorrow night and don't need my head filling with all the pike-hugging, Bob-slagging rubbish. Yeh, just thought, another Bob isn't it. Must be open season on Bobs again

Isn't this just the sort of over heated debate that caused Peter Jacobs to throw in the towel a few weeks ago when the insults ( I know what I am talking about and you don't etc ) were flying about.
Graham, be careful Woody doesnt follow him out of here permanently.

Just read that link you put up Chris, a very good read with some proper facts, i particularly liked the analysis of the results from the Lake Windermere Pike cull it just confirms what i believe, mother nature sorts its self out and is best left alone.

That's all we've got to say at the end of the day, apart from asking people to fish sensibly for pike.

Leave alone and the natural balance will prevail.

It's not rocket science.

Jeff calm down mate and you too Chris, I can see the "red mist" coming down from both of you.

You are both very passionate about what you believe to be true and are both very valuable members of FM.

Debate it, don't attack each other. As Peter said, don't let this happen again!

Come on guys, take a deep breath before you post, we're all friends on here, aren't we?

We will, can and need to unite.
