This is panning out better than Coarse Fisherman's Snide Rumours and Dirty Lies :)

One of the best angling mag features ever !

I reckon Skippy may well be tempted to part with his if you put up a decent case why you need it more than he does :D

Not a chance, mate. One day I'll work out what it's good for though it might help if I started using it !

Not sure what you picked up there Rob?

Me neither, boss. I was in there today for the twin of the 10ft 2.25lb Nash Dwarf I bought a few days ago, but forgot to take a look at the float rods.

The rod had a greyish olive two-tone look to the blank, which was how I recognised it as a Hardy. I have occasion to go back to the shop tomorrow so I'll attempt to remember to check it out. I'll get the name of that other rod, too; looked like a cracking, lightweight silverfish tool.

The rod in question is a Marksman XT 13ft float. According to spec it weighs 9.4 oz, or about the same as a 70s fibreglass rod like the Shakespeare Alpha. Twice the weight of the equivalent Drennan Acolyte.

The other rod was a 13ft Daiwa TDR Superflex match. It was far lighter - maybe 6oz tops - and better balanced, with a sublime, forgiving tip action, blending into a more progressive curve under heavier load.

Based solely on an in-shop comparison (and notwithstanding the fact that the Daiwa has a full duplon handle) I know which one I'd have taken home. In fact, it's offered at less than half price. Hmmm...:D

I'd just like to point out that I have nothing against Hardy rods, in fact, if I bought rods on looks alone it would win hands down, but that weight and forward balance reminds me of a Shakespeare XT1 travel rod that my son bought when he was home from Oz for a few weeks (without parental advice, I hasten to add!) He left it behind when he went back; I put it together, realised how horrid it was and it now gathers dust in a corner.

Does anyone have a Marksman XT float? I'd be interested to know your honest opinions of it.

Thanks for the clarification Rob, I suspected it was an XT.

I'm not familiar with them but the heavy description wasn't characteristic of the ones I am familiar with, I can't say I'd be overly keen to use one at that weight especially when my 15' weighs just over 8ozs :)

I've just snapped up a full set of three replacement carbon quivertips at half price (retail £40 each!) in case they become scarce, I've got two rods that take them (10' Ultra-lite Bomb & 13' Extreme Feeder) and they are interchangeable between the two but I don't fancy having several hundred quids worth of blanks on my hands where I'm trying to match tips.

From my experience of having to replace one before I found out that they do two types with the ones for the Extreme Feeder being a larger diameter with larger eyes than those for the bomb rod and I've no idea which I've ordered but at least they will get me by if need be.

And knowing my form... :eek:mg:

Thanks for that.Owners of Hardy coarse rods should be aware that with the new site, all previous ownership registrations details need to be renewed on the new site I have just been told. Also infor on XT/Supero rods has, it appears, disappeared in to the ether.
I have previous example of dealing with Pure Fishing where they seek to wipe their hands of problems once they have taken the money.
I want to register a 2nd hand XT I have bought so will have to re register for both mine or I see them running away again if problems occur later on with warranties etc.
Not impressed but am old enough not to be suprised.

Thanks for the heads up.

Like you I'm not surprised, it's such a shame when a company with the service credentials of Hardy are engulfed by the big machine and are replaced with the type of attitude that you have experienced.

Judging by the way show room stuff and spares have been sold off recently, I'd be very surprised if warranties will be worth a great deal anyway.

Glad I managed to pick up the two Conquests when I did, and for the price I did. I can't see me owning anything else with Hardy on it.

hague01, i'm pretty sure their guarantee is invalid if you buy a rod second hand, even if it has never been used. I have a couple of rods I bought from shops and registerd them with Hardy but the others that I purchased (unused) from people and still havin g their warrenty cards attatched i've never botherd to register them. I honestly think the guarantee is a crock of horse sheeeite anyhow.
I've never been a lover of Hardy tackle and as far as I can remember the marksman specialist rods are the first Hardy tackle i've bought/owned. I can't see myself getting anything else from Hardy in future.
I think to dodge guarantees is pretty sad.

In defence of Messrs Hardy I once skillfully "Binka'd" a Hardy Gem fly rod and they rolled me a new top joint which was delivered within 10 days at absolutely no charge whatsoever. No arguments,no admin fee,no shipping, nowt. I hadn't even registered the rod at the time of binkering as it was its first outing but I managed to style that one out.

I know the world has moved on a bit but my experience of Hardy aftercare is that its top class. I could not say the same of some other companies who are at least as well known.

That matches my experience of Hardy/Greys too. However, it predates the Pure Fishing buy out. Now we've got what would appear to be a complete change in direction, for the Hardy brand at least.

Shame. I dont expect a lifetime guarantee on a 60 nicker rod but if I'm forking out several hundred sovs then I expect a little more.

I think doubts on warranties are well placed. My XT was £51 2nd hand so I only registered to say I had 2.so no big deal.
On another note I am a wrinklie, only fished since I retired and then really only for carp here in essex as thats really all we have.I am going to the trent in the new year, before the season ends anyway.Where do I go for advice? I am like Manuel, I I know nothing.

By sheer coincidence I received an email from Hardy (Pure Fishing?) earlier today which was promoting their new website which is the same one I've been re-directed to when using my old link to the coarse fishing site.

My login details didn't work and there was a link within the email for feedback.

I completed the survey but it wasn't pretty :eek:mg:
