Yes, they are beautiful fish and grow to quite a size, they can make things difficult for anglers netting a fish and returning it quickly identification wise, when I first encountered them I wondered what they were, the owner stocked loads of them, plus roach, rudd and chub, I asked him if he was trying to confuse us yokels... 😂

Back on our syndicate water yesterday, as it fished well on Tuesday and it’s easier to drive to due to the horrendous roadworks on the main road we use to get to the fisheries, wasnt to bad yesterday as a lot of drivers seem to be avoiding this road, just the heard this morning that it’s been extended for another month as well.

anyway another good day yesterday, with 17 tench, 5 F1s, 1 carp, and my first crucian from here this year, which was nice to see, all caught on the pole on corn again, seems to be the best bait at the moment, with a lot using it.

it was best in the morning, and then it tailed of in the afternoon, but we left earlier to avoid the traffic, which worked well for once.

Maybe I will try the corn on the park lake Seth, haven't tried it yet just bread and a bit of occasional luncheon meat, never thought to try the corn but have a tin in my bag. I knew a bloke once that used to fish a big shallow weedy lake near Canterbury I used to go to. He would set up and throw nearly all of a big tin of sweetcorn in before he started , then he just just used to fish over it all day and he used to catch a lot of tench and occasional other species, fish came and went but by the end of the day he had a lot of fish and it was a hard lake. Don't think I will do that, for one I am only fishing for a few hours but, I often think it is not a bad idea if your going to fish all day.

Try feeding just pellet(in small amounts) and fish, meat, corn or bread on the hook, do not feed those baits at all, it's surprising...

I had a strange day’s fishing. I went to a club venue which has two lakes. One is a tench and crucian only water and after having a walk around both I opted to fish that one. It has natural banks which I like. No early start for me today, I didn’t get set up until about 11o/clock. I chucked a couple of handfuls of 6mm pellets when I arrived and by the time I had my first cast it was fizzing away merrily. I started catching immediately but the stamp of the tench was rather small. I tried a variety of baits and settled on 9mm hard pellets I ended up with 76 tench up to 4.5lb and one solitary crucian. I think the crucian’s were bullied out. Two things happened that were strange, the first came when I netted a tench and scooped up two small crucians. The second was a grass snake that managed to get itself entangled in my landing net. It must have been patrolling the margin when it managed to snag itself up in the mesh. What a mess, it took me at least half an hour to free it. As snakes go it was very well behaved and very docile. When it was freed I put it on my unhooking mat, so it had the option of going back into the water or along the bank. It went back into the water and seemed none the worse for its adventure. It was a very good day’s float fishing and the tench put up a great fight on my Acolyte plus and three pound line. I would estimate that at least half of today’s fish were over three pounds, which made for an enjoyable day. Only one other angler was on the lake and he didn’t show up until late in the afternoon, which was also a bonus.

I bought a reel a few years back, it’s a Shimano twin power with a triple drag system. I’ve hammered that reel, not abused it, but it’s had a lot of use including lure fishing and if I could never buy another fixed spool reel I would be happy to fish with that one forever. A testament to how good quality tackle is these days. It still looks and works like new new.

A crazy day Ray, 76 tench, that's just amazing, and what a lovely looking lake.
It was like fish soup in front of me. I have had decent catches here before. Both of my granddaughters have had over 30 fish each in a session and they are beginners. I had a chat with some anglers on the other lake and they all struggled, so I made a good choice.

I had a few hours on the Charente yesterday. It is a long bank holiday weekend so there were a lot more folk out and I didn't fancy the swim I had hoped to fish because of that. I had packed a 10 foot Avon so was able to get off the beaten track and under somd trees for shade. It was 30C at mid afternoon. The mozzies were about and I was bitten twice while setting up. I use antiseptic gel, the sort used for hand cleaning to take away the itching. I put too much on and so rubbed the residue all over my arm. I did the same on the other arm on a whim and never got bothered again. They hovered, but did not land on me.

I ledgered because of the extra water coming down. Too heavy for my usual sliding float approach. I was looking for bream, chub, barbel mainly and any gibel or common carp that came along so I didn't use a bobbin or other bite indicator, just the rod tip. I got a 4" bleak second cast on the drop followed by a roach of the same size on dead reds. There was an explosion in bleak numbers 2 or 3 years ago and now some of them are massive. If I lowered the bait down slowly under the rod end I had a bleak hang itself every time. A change to worm just ended up with rattles and a shredded worm. Sweetcorn was ignored so I used a soft pellet and ended up with three bream and a dozen or more swatted mozzies that were hovering around my arms. No more bites from them though.

The first Tinca I’ve had for a long time as they’ve been fairly absent since the pollution incident in the estate lake that I usually fish; which happened a few years ago.

Only a couple of pounds (not weighed) but a great result never the less.

Caught while testing out my new Drennan X-Tension Specialist float rod with a light waggler.

I also had a few Small Crucians plus quite a few hand sized Roach and Rudd, but this Tench was the icing on the cake as Tench are my favourite species regardless of their size.
