Fish were really on yesterday , unfortunately I had the fishing imps in the same peg as me so suffered multiple tangles , two hooklink failures , various inept mis casts - all these things all day also, "sausage Dave" who runs the cafe had wrapped up aswell so not only no cups of tea but I liked to have a chat with him mid afternoon ( he's been all over the world and always had good craic ).
Started off in the morning fishing to the end of the island with the feeder on the carp only pool ( they have put silvers in now as they found the carp started eating at night - the silvers provide competition ) two casts two carp 8lb plus , pool was empty so a nice relaxing day loomed. A guy came and sat directly opposite me - Damn , we had a quick chat he didn't mind if the odd wayward cast came his way, we chatted about how many obvious fish signs there were at the end of the island, there were lots of the big swirls which are so exciting. Anyway I couldn't get another fish , my ( hair rigged ) bait was sitting in a carp jacuzzi and not even a twang ! Even worse there were a couple of matches on so my pool became utterly full ( curiously the swim either side remained empty ) that clinched it for me , it really did feel like we were little gnomes in a garden pond.
So I upped sticks and moved to a pool that has a more mixed stock and which I had totally to myself , decided to try out a few Skillz pinging maggots out with the catty and then casting into it with the waggler. Frankly this was much needed casting practice , I find it quite easy with a waggler though and was dropping it right where I wanted and catching a few nice toach long range , though I did also miss a lot of bites.
Next caught my first ever fish on a zig rig , bait was a disc of bread and a piece of fake corn , caught a few aswell by casting where it was shallow so the bread was on the surface ( naughty ). Chatted to a lad about 15 who was waiting for the carp to come on on the other pool , he said he doesn't like silvers but he did recognise the roach and crucians I was catching, a dopey carp swam past so we caught it in the landing net which made us both laugh.
Went back to the original pool to get ready for when the margins light up and most people go home , got my original peg back but it didn't feel right to start fishing the end of the island again as the guy opposite me was dropping his feeder there , I asked him how he got on "brilliant" was the predictable reply , I watched him as one carp took the bait on the drop , fair play to him , he seemed a nice bloke I'm glad he had a good day.
To my left on the opposite bank was some guy with more gear than I have in my shed , I think he was practising for a match , he was constantly pinging pellets to the end of the pole , then waggling the pole up and down ( slapping ? ) , then catching , then feeding while the fish was in the net , then feeding , then catching , over and over , he was like some fishing robot sent from the future to anhiallate mankind using a a fishing pole.
So everyone was catching and I wasn't and I was getting p**** off , then the guy opposite me packed in and thanked me for hokding off when I got back to my peg , so nice underarm cast to the island and it was suddenly catchingnotfishing and I cheered up. Wow I'd be rubbish fishing rivers , though probably being on my own and next to moving water would make up for there not being a constant supply of fish.
My son came to pick me up in tne van and as there was hardly anyone left on the pool he had a few casts , even though he had his office clothes on, he had a fifty percent fish to cast ratio, I must admit I do love sitting next to him just chatting while he is fishing , especially in the late afternoon.
