Today we (URACS) fished our annual tidal match on the Thames just downstream of Kew bridge in west London. I arrived at 7:30 and the tide was still racing in. Around 8:30 we drew and the tide turned. Once the beach was exposed we climbed down. One of our members was setting up his keepnet and saw a bloke walking off with his made up rod. Luckily 2 fit blokes jogged past and matey shouted to them to chase the thief. Luckily they caught him and the wan*** threw the rod into the river. The joggers got it back in the end. Anyway, I started off on waggler and maggot as it was black with dace before we started. Not a touch. Chucked out a cage feeder with maggot and had a clonking bite, a dace which would have been a goer 40 years ago...
I had one bream around 5lb and a few more dace before my platform blew over in a massive gust of wind. Lost all my groundbait, and most of my other baits. Worst of all it knocked my keepnet over and all but 3 small dace remained. It didn't make much odds really as the angler next to me had 10 or so bream and bits for 38lb. 2nd ( the one who's rod was nicked ) had 2 fish for 28lb. One was a bream, the other a 24lb Mirror carp. Was a bit of a battle on match gear, at one point his spool was down to the backing....
3rd 24lb all bream.. 13 fished...
Great day out..

Ha ha and they say fishing is boring :)

I did some trotting today but I think I messed it up. The got them feeding roughly 2 inches off the top. Had bleak to start with on the trot through and then it went to Dace and roach.

All this feed going in attracts fish on its own, bigger fish started to show around the 10oz mark with the occasional 1lb+ visibly taken 2 inches below the surface. The float went back in the box and I free lined with a shot and a single maggot on the drop (after a lot of experimenting with the shot and hook size :wh).

I caught loads of decent fish it was fun, Highlight of the day was seeing a Pike of around 7lb coming into my swim. Most anglers hate it but It's the first time I have seen one properly in the flesh so I was buzzing.

Very strange weekend. Went fishing for 48hrs, didn't play or land a single fish, didn't have a single rod of my own in the water, yet banked and weighed in well over 500lb of fish. Alternatively known as formation carp wrestling and nearly as frustrating a thing as frequenting a strip joint!;):D Struggling to stay awake now, doubt I'll be fighting it much longer!

Trotted on the Salwarpe for around 15 Perch none over half a pound and a couple of Chublets. All bar two taken on worm, left over from last week. It was noticeable that the healthier bait produced more bites, memo to self.......
BUY FRESH BAIT:eek:mg:

I fished seven different swims today, 1pm til 7.15pm.
Started off upstream and slowly worked my way down; with not a bite along the way.

I ended up in by favourite swim, and a barbel that fell to garlic spam was lost in a snag but cheese paste saved the day:)

OK, I’ll do this one Simon as you did the last....met up with Simon at the respectable time of 10.45 for a few hours trotting the Colne. Lots of roach, some bleak, a few perch, (I’m not going to mention the snotties;)) a few gudgeon (a couple of rogue jacks) all on maggot. Also something heavy spat out the hook and left the end stuff in an overhanging tree – left at 3.30, Simon was still catching when I left...............

Can't make up my mind whether that's a brench or a tream?

Fished on the Chesterfield canal yesterday, roving around and stalking with freelined slow-sinking bread resulted in a 9-3 canal carp, two bream of 4-1 and 5-2 and a 2-8 tench as well as a good few pound-or-so roach some nice chub. Mate of mine managed to get a tench on corn for 5-12. All in all a good day!

This week:
Nothing planned so far, friends just bought a car so we're going somewhere new tomorrow night.

Sounds like an aquatic version of my sheep shearing antics last year.

I said SHEARING - behave! :D

It has been a while, but I've finally been somewhere I can talk about.
After the weekend's exertions, I'm struggling to get motivated to go fishing. I had vaguely thought about going for a 48hr plus session but just couldn't be pestered. Instead, as I had a pint of old maggots to use up, I had a wander on my closest bit of river. Didn't get down until after four. By the time I could no longer see my float properly I'd had seventeen decent sized dace, eight grayling, three trout and a chub. Made for an enjoyable little session. Shame that I had to wade through quite so many minnows to get what I got though. No surprise, it's generally what happens when you fish the upper reaches of most northern rivers with maggots.

Good result mate. Not easy to get away from the minnows around here , other than trotting your float through fast water

Good day today, fishing 4-10pm.

I started off with maggot feeder, with fake maggot as bait, size 14 hook.
One thumb sized perch was the surprise when reeling in.

I carried on with this method and caught a chublet and baby barbel.
Then switched to a size 10 hook with 5 maggots - another perch.

Then a small trout fell to cheese paste.

Barbel #1 went for hair rigged garlic spam; only small, but the best looking one I've caught so far.

Then as it grew dark a slightly larger one came in.

Same stretch of river as last night, different peg and a touch of extra water. Fished from 1715 to 2115 and the result was 27 dace, 8 chub, 1 grayling and plenty of minnows.

Fish were really on yesterday , unfortunately I had the fishing imps in the same peg as me so suffered multiple tangles , two hooklink failures , various inept mis casts - all these things all day also, "sausage Dave" who runs the cafe had wrapped up aswell so not only no cups of tea but I liked to have a chat with him mid afternoon ( he's been all over the world and always had good craic ).

Started off in the morning fishing to the end of the island with the feeder on the carp only pool ( they have put silvers in now as they found the carp started eating at night - the silvers provide competition ) two casts two carp 8lb plus , pool was empty so a nice relaxing day loomed. A guy came and sat directly opposite me - Damn , we had a quick chat he didn't mind if the odd wayward cast came his way, we chatted about how many obvious fish signs there were at the end of the island, there were lots of the big swirls which are so exciting. Anyway I couldn't get another fish , my ( hair rigged ) bait was sitting in a carp jacuzzi and not even a twang ! Even worse there were a couple of matches on so my pool became utterly full ( curiously the swim either side remained empty ) that clinched it for me , it really did feel like we were little gnomes in a garden pond.

So I upped sticks and moved to a pool that has a more mixed stock and which I had totally to myself , decided to try out a few Skillz pinging maggots out with the catty and then casting into it with the waggler. Frankly this was much needed casting practice , I find it quite easy with a waggler though and was dropping it right where I wanted and catching a few nice toach long range , though I did also miss a lot of bites.

Next caught my first ever fish on a zig rig , bait was a disc of bread and a piece of fake corn , caught a few aswell by casting where it was shallow so the bread was on the surface ( naughty ). Chatted to a lad about 15 who was waiting for the carp to come on on the other pool , he said he doesn't like silvers but he did recognise the roach and crucians I was catching, a dopey carp swam past so we caught it in the landing net which made us both laugh.

Went back to the original pool to get ready for when the margins light up and most people go home , got my original peg back but it didn't feel right to start fishing the end of the island again as the guy opposite me was dropping his feeder there , I asked him how he got on "brilliant" was the predictable reply , I watched him as one carp took the bait on the drop , fair play to him , he seemed a nice bloke I'm glad he had a good day.

To my left on the opposite bank was some guy with more gear than I have in my shed , I think he was practising for a match , he was constantly pinging pellets to the end of the pole , then waggling the pole up and down ( slapping ? ) , then catching , then feeding while the fish was in the net , then feeding , then catching , over and over , he was like some fishing robot sent from the future to anhiallate mankind using a a fishing pole.

So everyone was catching and I wasn't and I was getting p**** off , then the guy opposite me packed in and thanked me for hokding off when I got back to my peg , so nice underarm cast to the island and it was suddenly catchingnotfishing and I cheered up. Wow I'd be rubbish fishing rivers , though probably being on my own and next to moving water would make up for there not being a constant supply of fish.

My son came to pick me up in tne van and as there was hardly anyone left on the pool he had a few casts , even though he had his office clothes on, he had a fifty percent fish to cast ratio, I must admit I do love sitting next to him just chatting while he is fishing , especially in the late afternoon.

Fished the open match at Willows again today. A different section of the pit this week. Drew a flyer carp peg with an overhanging bush to my left.
Not great when it's a silvers only match...
No bites for 2 hours on the method long with yellow Bandums.
2m whip and maggot got me bite after bite from roach and small skimbobs.
Stayed on it for 2 hours but the stamp of fish was small. Back out on the method and not a touch, the sun was out and the breeze dropped. Ate my lunch watching others catching decent skimmers which was a little frustrating...
Back on the whip for another hour and loads more roach hit the net. Couldn't find the better roach all day. Only hooked one carp which took my entire rig for a swim... Back on the feeder for the last 20 mins and had 2 decent skimmers before the whistle.
Came last :eek:mg: with 12lb 15.
Winner had a bite every cast during the 6 hours for 101lb all skimmers....
Nice day out though...
