It really is a bonus when you can have a nice day's fishing, listen to some good music and with a smartphone you can also tease the Binkmeister......:D
---- with all the Hardy gear, the most deadly bit of kit I had the other day was a feeder made from a strip of throwaway milk bottle plastic.:wh

After 3 blank trips reservoir piking ,yesterday was a trip out on the Wreake which was still running high & fast having a murky green/grey colour. Eventually teased out a chub @ 2lb 6oz on legered cheesepaste after trying flake, crust, worms & sweetcorn under the float & leger to no avail.

the northern rivers have been very difficult to fish the last 6 weeks or so. The river was finally fishable today, so I needed to get out, despite the temps. I didn't get to the banks of the Tees until early afternoon.

I was fishing with a drennan acolyte feeder rod, new daiwa feeder reel and 5lb drennan method and feeder line straight through to a size 8 hook. A small cage feeder was stopped by two float stops, so there was no swivel or additional weakness in the line. To counter the finicky bites, I used a very soft tip (1.5oz) and paid out a bow in the line. This way, the chub would feel very little resistance and bite more confidently - or that was the idea.

After a couple of taps, the tip pulled round and I was into a nice Tees chub - the gear performed well, and a nice chub was soon landed.

I couldn't buy another bite. I would have liked more but happy with this in freezing conditions.

The drennan acolyte feeder rod makes a good chub rod as well....I'd used it once before on a Stillwater and managed a small chub, but needed to try it with something bigger!

Some snow in the hills at the moment which I imagine will come down once the temps rise next week. Probably a grayling session next weekend on the upper reaches of the Ure....that's the plan at the moment anyway!

Well, that's my first blank of the season out of the way...
Fished club match on the R Colne at Uxbridge, river that nasty grey-green roadwater colour, rising very slowly from late morning but speeding up considerably as the day went on. Knew it was likely to be a chub or bust day so pretty happy to draw peg 59 just downstream of the overspill from the canal. As chub swims go though its a very unreliable one as they often seem to disappear from it for weeks or even months on end. Generally big fish though if you get them, get two and you would be unlucky not to have 10 lb.
So, nice easy choice as no other fish at all there at this time of year. Set up 4 no 4 stick, size 18 B911 to 0.13, and a bomb/ feeder rod. Figured that best chance of fish would be straightaway or last two hours- started with a big lump of flake on an 8 lobbed 10 yards down with a cage feeder and mashed bread in it. Generally a pretty immediate response here if this is going to work. It didn't. Switched to cheesepaste a bit further down the swim and closer to the far side and waited. After 90 minutes started a bit of loosefed maggot and switched to float half an hour later. Flow had really picked up and the original 4 no 4 wasn't going down right so upped to 6 no 4 and it behaved a lot better but without going under..
At half time tried one of my favourite small river tricks- give it a big handful and go for a walk ! One or two dace were coming from the 3 pegs in the Sluice, one chub from the swim down from me on the other side of the old mill, another further down the backstream and that was it. So, looked like one chub could win it and was still confident would find it. Confidence misplaced though, never a sign even in the last hour when stepped the feed right up hoping for the traditional "10 minutes to go chub".

One chub for 5-5 won it, then single chub of 3-13 and 3-2, then a few nice dace for 1-9. Only two others caught. Winner had his fish after 5 minutes..

Peg 59; pennywort will need another seeing to shortly

Plan A is (was) to fish the Frome tomorrow. But it's forecast to rain all day and it's still high and rattling through like an express train. But the clock is ticking and we cultured coarse anglers get kicked of these beats at the end of February. So the quest for the huge grayling has to continue.

I could try and lay a trail of subterfuge by posting a picture of the flooded valley with the aim of lessening the competition for swims. Here's such an image taken this afternoon:

But in truth. although there's an abundance of water in the fields and far too much in the river itself, the clarity of that water is pretty good and the grayling have had a long enough period to get used to it, I'll give it a go tomorrow!

Just need to find those big bits of balsa that come out of hiding every 10th year because my current tools of choice only run to 12gms:wh

Respect to all those who fished today. I decided to be a spectator while Neil1970 and a few other diehards fished lures on funny little rods with 1000 size reels and gay coloured braid...
Was I impressed?

I had a session with a mate at flaxlands near hook last week. We chose it specifically for several reasons: you can park on top of your swim, the pegs are wooden and shaped for a brolly/bivvy and they deliver hot food and Coffee to your swim for very reasonable prices. Got to say I had a fantastic session. I had two rods out, new team daiwa feeder rod, black widow reel on a method feeder. Bait was restricted as they only allow approved baits so I went with the g force groundbait (pellet mix with betain and stuff) hookbait was a 6mm coarse pellet sprayed with marukyu the one amino(won from a competition on Facebook) other rod was a float rod fished with maggots, also sprayed with the marukyu stuff. Caught my first load of crucians, a chub, loads of roach and a few bream. Had over 30 fish dawn till dusk my matr and the other anglers had no where near what I caught, maybe the spray actually worked??. Great days fishing to start the year. I only took two pictures and this is them

She's either done something, wants something or has broken something.....

If that happened in my house I would immediately suspect all three !

Here we go again ! The world against S-Kippy, yet again trying to catch him out or do him down...........................

You must spend your life looking, nay searching for all those who are against you / make your life a misery, from your wife to ( almost ) everyone on FM !!
I'm quite sure some, even many like you on here and the much maligned Mrs S, who is probably a charming person and no doubt thinks highly of you....

A trap ? What trap ? Someone does something nice for a loved one and immediately it's considered a trap - I don't think so !!

I've always thought myself a suspicious soul, but next to you, well next to you I'm a free wheeler !

Lighten up, man.....

Tongue in cheek, or what..add some smilies here !
