Of course I'm suspicious....remember what I do for a living.

As for the rest.. Im simply giving my public what they expect. Don't believe a word of it.

I take plenty of things seriously but myself isn't one of them.

Respect to all those who fished today. I decided to be a spectator while Neil1970 and a few other diehards fished lures on funny little rods with 1000 size reels and gay coloured braid...
Was I impressed?

Judge for yourselves?

This pic is surely coming back as a Caption Competition.

S-kippy....just for the record I don't have a clue as to what you do for a living but I'd be interested to know...............

I love the ' my public ' bit, but gives you a lot to live up to, eh? '

Hope you're enjoying the Chiltern / South Bucks weather at the moment. Down to -5 last night in my neck of the woods so I gave today's outing a miss as this was more than a suggestion from my good wife !!

ps I actually thought I'd deleted my last post as it seemed little 'in yer face ' after I read it through.....obviously didn't work ..

I woke this morning with an invite to go zedding on the Trent but there was someting telling me it could wait a while as I had been toying with the idea of a little urban greyling fishing in the centre od Sheffield as the river is back to normal levels after the recant floods.
What better time , winter, post floods, both go well with the species so a quick "ask" of my nieghbour if he would like to join me and an hour later we were both riverside armed with minimal float gear and maybe a half pint of maggots each.
The river here is still pretty shallow , the upper city reaches are fairly pennine in character so three foot of depth is about maximum.
Two maggots on an eighteen , a few freebies and we were both away.
The plan was to swim jump each other after maybe a half hour in each swim then walk back to our starting point and work back down.
Third trot down and the tiny "sight bob" float sails away in the gin clear water and tho hooked the fishe comes free--- sugar !!!.
No worries as soon after I land a lovely fish of some nine inches while my nieghbour does the same.
A move and I had three more about the same size , each one swimming accross the river into even stronger water to increase its chance of freeing itself, great stuff.
At the end of the reach we were near a bridge with fast angry water but we still did ok but just below us was a guy fly fishing who did marginally better with a home tied shrimp --- something I will definately be doing with my own gear at the first opportunity -- brilliant guy to watch -- a real expert and a joy to witness.
I had a short chat with him as he was walking upstream and it turns out we knew of each other from some forty years back, nice to know all the old timers are still out and about, a big ex matchman with many an open win on fenland who as put away the course gear in favour of the trout gear.
Anyway, I ended up with six greyling, a couple lost and several bites in between to keep us both interested, my mate had eight.
The river here as been developed over the last few years into a green corridor thro the town centre with good footpaths, seating for folk to rest and all with good, easy parking.
Not the prettiest place to fish as its all surrounded by heavy industry but its all in the eye of the beholder.
But, with superb greyling, dace, chub , trout and the odd Barbel guess what --------

Its all free !!!.

Tunnel Barn Farm,Tues open, split between canal and club pools today, with 15 anglers on each..I drew peg 11 on canal, good peg ,towards end of the island, but frozen solid,as were all pools!!
I broke out one channel to 11m,about 2m wide..Started match on 10mm punch,no feed,up to ice at 11m...and managed 4 mirrors and an F1,in the first hour...When that died i started tapping in 6 micros and fishing a 4mm expander, this resulted in another 3 F1,s,so i tried double maggot, still feeding micros, against the ice,i caught in fits and starts for rest of match, adding another 15 F1,s.....i managed to put 45-9-0 on the scales, which was only good enough for 3rd on lake,,but i picked up the section...Dave Chapman(Swann baits)won with 50-0-0,and John Berry(Swann Baits) beat me to 2nd with 45-13-0...I should of done better, having lost 6 or 7 big fish under the ice, cost me..But a lovely crisp, sunny day,and plenty of bites, despite having to break the ice.it was good to be out fishing....Tight lines,Gazza:D:D

With a clear cold day yesterday in the offing I decided to have a go at the Frome on the basis that the grayling would be willing to have a go as well.
Water level was still very high and I abandoned my usual trotting tactics for a simple ledger with 2 red maggots on a 14 hook.
This seemed to work pretty well and I lost count of how many grayling I caught, but maybe 15. Mostly small ones but a couple of nice fish about 2 pounds. Sitting in my comfy chair in the sunshine it was a nice change from the south easterly gales of recent weeks.
I even got to like my new Drennan feeder rod a bit more. I usually like the stuff I buy but with its skinny handle, low profile rings and 2 unwieldy pieces (it would be better with 3) I was beginning to wonder why I bought it. In fact it was just the job for the fiesty grayling in the fast water.

Popped out to the Gade after lunch yesterday for what was only two hours fishing. The moor was bathed in afternoon sunshine which heated up my wooly hat nicely although it made no impact on my feet as I waded in the shallows. Setting myself the usual target of ten fish when it's this cold I was happy with a few roach and dace where I started although bites quickly stopped as it was just so bright there.

Needing to warm up the feet I went downstream but the next spot was in total shade and had a frost on it that was more than a few days old. Despite sitting in a cold 'hole' the fishing was warming with plenty of small roach with the odd tinfoil bream and small chub to keep me busy. The flow was just perfect and with the float dotted down to a pinprick every bite seemed to result in a fish. Even a few good perch turned up as the sun was going down and I was able to use the landing net a couple of times before it became one with the frosty rushes.

Ended up with 31 fish in a couple of hours which shows how reliable small rivers can be in winter.

Where waters meet
I went out for a bit today.
First fish was a tiny Perch from a lock, and then later on by a mill stream I tested out the clutch on my new reel with a 6lb8oz jack, which provided a couple of minutes fun on light tackle.

Ventured out on the Wreake again today - river still up & pushing through. Some slashing to my right turned out to be a kingfisher diving from a clump of grass at the waters edge.It had 3 minnows and flew off upstream with the last one hanging from its beak.Later a flock of long tailed tits in the willows by the bridge were the next distraction & I missed striking minute bites on legered crust & flake.Moved downstream to have 2 chub, 3lb 14oz & 1lb 2oz - beautiful sitting in the sunshine.

Great post, that !

I had to Google the ' Wreake ' as I didn't have clue on location, but having done so it completes the mental picture beautifully...Wonderful bird life, chub fishing on bread, not to mention the sunshine, makes it a perfect day to be by the river for my money !

The catch, almost incidental..

Finally got onto the Frome yesterday but very cold even by the time I eventually ventured out. Stopped off at Holme Bridge for a quick look and took a load of images, one or two turned out OK.

Decided to head upstream a couple of miles and eventually settled in to trot what was still a fairly angry river. Still high and very pacey but a good clarity so I was confident.

Short story was it was a bit of a struggle, one or two grayling to around 14oz/1lb and a few small brown trout. Tough as it was, I enjoyed being out there at last. Plenty of wildlife about, two kestrels and several kites were very active in adjacent fields along the tree line. A number of deer were happily grazing a bit further away but managed to snap them at maximum range.

River is still dropping today but rain is forecast and will immediately bring it back up.

Like Neil I have been watching the Frome levels daily. With sincere apologies to Dion Dimucci, I am no Wanderer. I pick peg and if it turns out to be good, bad or indifferent I fish it out anyway just to see if I can winkle something out, which can be unimpressive but quite satisfying. So over the last six days I have fished the same peg three times. Last Friday there was water on and it was tramming through, I all I managed was one grayling on the pound mark. So come Tuesday the level was the same but the flow steady plus perfect weather conditions for the stick. The result was slightly better, three grayling of the same stamp. Then today, the level was almost sock on and first run through produced a hand sized grayling then another, whilst they weren't climbing up the rod I did manage 16 grayling, one just short of 2lb plus two trout the biggest of which went 2lb 8oz, So come Noon a smug Pete wrapped up and made for the Pub, Pete.
