Jerry, that marginal weed makes me drool just thinking of stret pegging down the side of it.
It reminds me of the upper witham near Grantham back in the eighties.
Super times back then with some cracking roach !!!.

Pity they were not a bit bigger on a 16 hook as well red or white maggot , Whiter worked well in the morning then come the afternoon bites dried up switched to reds and off we go again ... this water at the moment is at best 2 feet deep as well .. needs dredging must be 2 feet of dead leaves on the bottom .

Another pike blank. A mild damp misty day and not a tweek. Its my usual January piking when they seem to harder, for me at least. Even the magic lamprey failed to snare one.

Nope, nothing against line from the top but that's a 'trick of the light' - must have got caught up as I put it down for the pic............:)

PS there you go, I haven't changed it from last week and you will clearly see it coming from the bottom and going to the left of the pic:w

I had planned fishing for today but it is unlikely to be as It would be a little churlish of me to be out when deliveries arrive from my kids. So far I have had a pair of waders(brill) an arrangement of sempervivums and there is another on its way. I am blessed and fishing can wait:rolleyes:

Had a few Perch a couple of days back but kept loosing them at the bank side

I would love to get out and blank - it's all frozen where I live with only marginal hope of it clearing before the next cold spell in February

When I started out with jigs and dropshot a couple of years ago, I thought at times I'd never catch. In fact, as far as zander are concerned, I'm still struggling! But stick at it and experiment lots (don't underestimate the importance of colour) and success will come. :)

What are you primarily targeting?

Hi at least we are not frozen over ! There's quite a quick flow on the canals with the recent rain and they are well coloured.

I'm targeting Perch, tried darker lures in the coloured water, lighter ones when it's clearer all soft shad paddle tail type. Might get some creature style lures and try them.

Hm, the rule of thumb that I learnt is more the opposite way around. ;) Try light, bright vivid colours in murky water. They need to contrast well against the surrounding water.

And for clearer water where more UV light gets through try natural/glittery colours.

I've heard, but not personally been able to confirm, that 'firetiger' is a good all round pattern, having the best of both worlds. High contrast, but also natural looking (perch).

Every water is different though, of course. Where I fish a lot (water very clear) plain white is a real killer.

Like Rich has already said, colored water try brighter colors such as white and yellow. The luminous white lures always worked a treat on my local canal. Darker more natural colors a good when the water is clearer.

Just keep watercraft in mind as well, under bridges and alongside boats are always good spots to drop a lure.

Cold but good day yesterday. Took another 5lb plus chub from my new little river.
I was laying on with a Avon float some two yards downstream in line with the rod tip. Bait bread flake.
I'd put a small amount of mashed bread with hemp and meat in at my feet, the river was up but no pace. It's great looking at a float in winter, for me much better than a rod tip. The little Robin I seem to have adopted came for some lunch, and took bread from my bait box after a few false tries.

There was no heat in the sun, and by 3pm it was freezing, so I packed happy with the 5.6oz fish. It was longer than the last 5.10z and had a mark on the tail. I'd had the river to myself again, it was worth getting out.

Richard.

****y123 - I enjoyed reading your blog, you are right regarding laying on, it's better than watching a quivertip. Keep 'em coming.

A strange week , one of PBs, not a personal best of a species but pike and plan Bs .early in the week I was all geared up for a pike day and ended up fishing for greyling then on account of another day piking having to be cancelled with two friends I found myself going back for another day at Toft Newton in lincs to enjoy one of Andys and Jasons " any method" days with the trout.
Plenty of good fish, browns and rainbows on both float and feeder, good sized specimens to with one of two plus pounds being a small one with near and plus threes being the main sized fish with several four lb fish in the mix and a near six being the biggest of the day where they just kept coming steadily.
Great fun on a well run venue thats run by very caring staff.
The best fish however was one that I had cancelled my originally planned day day for which was a pike of twenty plus lbs taken by a disabled fly angler (by design) in a boat.
You can see the fish if you google toft newton on facebook (im in the background beyond the boat dock).
I was talking to the captor on the dock before we left for home where he showed me lots of fotos of truly awesome pike he'd had on fly , loads of big twenties with a thirty or two and never publicised any -- an angler at the top of his game--- his best day with the big girls was five twenties on th fly, awesome, and there was me thinking my day was akin to a fox in a henhouse, he goes and fronts up the fox big time.

Started out in this beauty of a swim and ended up in it all session. Can't really tell from the picture but the river drops a few feet to the left and starts to raise about 20 metres downstream, meaning lots of slack water. Perfect for the Chevin.

Only went for a few hours but what a trip it was. Swapped from a size 10 hook to a 8 on 6lb hl to a open ended feeder. Using flake on the hook and liccy bread for feed.
An hour or so in and my rod wraps round producing a small but nice chub. No more than 10 minutes later I'm pulling the titanic of river dearne chub. No scales so if any could estimate the weight I'd be more than grateful.
Ended up killing my swim so I just packed up. Plenty of bread left so should be back Monday or Tuesday, pull out his big brother.

Unusually difficult day on the local river. It was lower and clearer than I'd anticipated, but that doesn't usually matter much. Today I really had to work hard at it to induce some bites. Early on, I thought it was going to be one of those days, and that I might have bought a pup, when the few bites I managed were missed or bumped. I did eventually start to pick up a few fish but the bites were sketchy. I ended up having to wait until the float dipped like it was snagged. Hitting pauses or slight dips resulted in bumps and complete misses. Even when leaving the bites to develop resulted in only just hooked grayling. Even the trout weren't quite as bazai as normal.

At the end of the day, I finished up with a hard won eight grayling and two spotty idiots. Mercifully, I don't think I've bought a pup, it was just one of those days.
