Another afternoon on the river made more difficult by an interloper fishing in my swims!;):D Three people fishing midweek on a stretch I usually have to myself all winter long. Perhaps the word is getting out, just as I intend. Great news for the club, perhaps not such good news for me.

I was forced to fish an unfavoured swim, for no reward at all, while I waited for a peg hopper to vacate one of my banker swims. From the little I saw of him, I suspect that he had overfed a bit, so I was going to have to be patient and feed tiny amounts in an effort to get them interested in a moving bait again. It did prove to be the case, but I did start picking up the odd fish. After a while, the bites became much more regular, but they were quite finicky. Unusually for me, I dropped a hook size and used a lighter hooklink. That had the desired effect and I started getting more regular hook ups, though a few were tiny grayling. I did manage three around the pound mark and one at 1lb 6oz (season's best, so far) amongst 11 grayling and 2 trout.

Got out twice this week, once to a prolific stretch of the Lea where i had Plenty of good chub as well as dace, roach and perch. The day after to my beloved Gade where i took my dad for his first day out for a while (health issues) I had just as good a time there catching smaller roach and a few good perch with my ol' man bless him.

Thankful that any fishing is good fishing, get out as much as you can folks before age catches up with you.

I had to make do with another session on the River Glane today. I really wanted to fish the big lake with deadbaits but as I couldn't get off until after 10am and had to be back for 4pm in order to take a friend and her elderly Mother to the airport I ended up local. I've fished this stretch three times in just over a week using a variety of lures. Here are some of today's selection........

The river varies from rough, rocky pocket water to smooth glides to deep mill pools and natural to urban within about 2km or so........

Obviously I concentrated on the deeper, wider stretches and spent quite a bit of time casting under those factory pilings and around the corner, upstream, right up against the wall where the current was strongest hoping to lure a zander or large perch. There are fallen and overhanging trees that got a good going over too. Once again though not a single knock, pluck or pull to liven up my day.

Finished the day three lures lighter too. :(

Getting closer…

But still no cigar!

Took some nice perch today on the float and worm, the best going well over two but it looks like I’m gonna have to keep whipping it to a foam for that four pounder :)

After fishing the LIF on Sunday I have suffered endless public ridicule because I had the audacity to sit under an umbrella in the rain....though I am struggling to think when else you might do that. This is what happens when you go winkle fishing with gudgeon anglers.

No matter...after all that I needed some proper hard "manfishing" so off to Bury Hill for another go at the zander. Didn't look good...barometer a bit high, not enough cloud etc. plus the misfortune to stumble upon Torchy The Battery Boys Fan Club's annual fishing trip. What is it with these blokes ? Are they scared of the dark or something ? I had to have a frank exchange of views with the numpty up the bank a bit who was blinding me and spraying light over the water I was trying to fish. This when he wasn't fiddling about with his friggin alarms. I may not be the worlds greatest angler [shut up Clarke !] but I have worked out that to catch fish it helps to have your bait in the water rather more than out of the water. Some people just dont seem to get that.

Anyway...I had a mugfish at dusk and then not even a bleep while *******y Bill was playing with his searchlight and fiddling with his delkims. I was about to go have another stiff word when he started to pack up...though it took him nigh on 40 minutes to clear up & finally pi$$ off. Only then was I able to relax .

Call it co-incidence but once he'd gone I had 4 runs in 45 mins...lost one, landed the other 3,best just over 7lb. I was happy with that if not with him.

I want one of them pilotless drones for Christmas so I can take these twatz out from the other side of the lake without getting up from my chair.

What did it go Binka? looks well over 3!

Thanks Greenie, you can do my guestimating any day :)

Truth is i'll never know, I had the scales with me but didn't bother with them and put a safe guess at around 2lb 10ozs give or take.

Son of M and I fished the GUC at Startops end. Gin clear and motionless due to no boat movement while the lock is repaired...
Both on poles we opted for a punch line down the track and a chopped worm rig up the far shelf. Having agreed to fish 11:30 to 4pm battle commenced.
Not a touch on either line for the first hour, then my float lifted on the worm line and buried. Lifted into it and hit nothing. This happened a second time and I missed again aaaaaah! I tried a tiny worm section threaded up a 20 and hit the bite. A tiny perch. 2 more followed and that was it.
SOM also had 3 perch on his worm line but his were marginally bigger.
Hardly a breath of wind all day and patchy bright sunshine made it comfortable but kinel did it get chilly when we were packing up..

No matter...after all that I needed some proper hard "manfishing" so off to Bury Hill for another go at the zander.

I watched a Youtube vid the other day about Bury Hill zander. God, it was hilarious. Started out with this Cockney spiv type whispering into the camera and glancing round every couple of seconds or so as if watching out for the zander police. Then he unveiled an extensive collection of unhooking tools that are supposedly obligatory equipment, and proceeded to demonstrate each one in turn before, and this is when I nearly wet myself, confiding that these were but a small selection of his unhooking tools.

Sounds like the place is full of loonies :D

Sadly, there are some proper numpties to be found there. As I mentioned on here a few weeks back we had Graeme Pullen capering about like a frog on speed filming. What a palaver ! I'd have had the right dog if I'd travelled a long way [and plenty do] to fish Bury Hill only to have that goon pitch up next to me with his lights and his cameras and his OTT presentation. Bloke had too many sweets as a kid, obviously. That vid might well have been him....I cannot bring myself to look in case it is though.

I like a bit of room when I'm fishing. I hate being in a line & would move rather than put up with that...and I often do.

This was someone called Evans. In the comments some wag has put "You've forgotten the bolt croppers" :D

Get over here Skippy. Then general rule is that if you can't get a Citroen C15 van within 5 metres of the water it is virgin territory. And that's about 95% of the lakes and rivers round here. :D

I had about three quarters of a pint of maggots left, it wasn't blowing a hoolie or persisting it down, might as well go for a quick session on the river.:) Eleven grayling (up to 1lb 3oz) and seven trout from the first swim until it died a death. Moved on to another spot for a further grayling and five trout. As I was land the last trout, to make an OCD dream of twelve of each, it started hoofing down. My cue to pack up and leave for home. Hopefully, the rain due this weekend won't put too much extra water in the river for too long.

Been suggested I ought to post something on this thread, so....

Chubbing
Fished 5hrs Wednesday using bread and mash.

Landed 7 best 4.4 & 4.6, and only 1 under two which had beautiful red fins, when it rolled near the net I thought.....for a second......but it wasn't :(

Lost 3, a good fish which unhooked itself and left me playing a reedbed, how DO they do it  and two which just came off.

Mince, steakn mussels on the Trent today looking for a chub or two.
I went on the lowest bit of the non tidal.
The river was fining down but still plenty to shift and still fairly coloured so I settled in a swim cut back from the main flow that was showing a slight crease.
Two whole houre later the tip rattled but no positive bite followed so retrieved and rebaited with steak andon the recast the rod rattled round and I was connected to a chub, not big at around 2-8 but very welcome.
Another hour with no more bites so I retreated back upstream for the last two hours but non, zip,

Another go at the BH zander yesterday. Damned things had their especially silly heads on as they are won't to do when the weather is on the turn. I had a succession of pick ups and drops....bloody things just playing with the bait. I tried all my little tricks but only managed to get 2 proper hittable runs.

Hit both and both of them bloody fell off. So that's my first blank out of the way. Can't wait to tell the Big Fella......he will sound sympathetic but deep down I know he'll be laughing his head off. Mates eh ?
